Note from the editor... first
of all I'd like to thank Kurt for joining me in
this thing called AORLAND.
Yep... it's been kinda slow in updates in the
last months but it's taking off again so I hope
to see you all here. So what is Kurt doing in
AORLAND? Well, he'll be mainly writing about all
the things pop... call it modern rock or power
pop (or pseudo-grungy shit for many people).
Actually he has total freedom to write about
whatever he likes so don't be surprised if you
find the review of a dance cd or a X-rated pic of
the man himself...after
all it's KURT'S
KRAP...

GORGEOUS
pop craft, this twelve-song set is bursting with
enough hooks and melodies for two CDs. While not
outright power pop, as the material here is not
all that crunchy, it's more like the "Pet
Sounds" era of the Beach Boys brought into
2001. The songs range from the guitar pop of
"Tiny World" and "Annie" to
the more pure piano pop of "Dressed In
Blue" and "Necessary Evil". The
whole affair brings to mind such diverse
songwriters as Lennon/McCartney, Wilson, Falkner,
Lynne and Bacharach (courtesy of pop guru
Brian Kassan). This is an enormous effort that
those who still mourn the loss of Jellyfish (like
yours truly) will able to fill a few of those
holes in your musical soul.

I
confess, I plead ignorance to knowing only Nick's
one big hit, "Hot Child In The City".
But boy, what I've been missing! Though Nick's
voice could be mistaken for a female at times (or
maybe even a young boy), musically this is balls
out glam with a definite power pop edge. Sleazy
songs like "One Of The Boys",
"Backstreet Noise" and "(You
Really) Rock Me" are practically blueprints
for everything bands like Poison, Pretty Boys
Floyd or early Motley Crue ever aspired to be.
Produced with perfection by pop maestro Mike
Chapman, I'm actually amazed how well these songs
hold up over twenty years on. All glam fans need
to add this one to their collections pronto.
I
must say there is a lot of great music coming out
today, and actually getting a fair shake from
both MTV and radio. If this band were on a major,
I have no doubts they would move right to the
top. Taking bits of 80s hard rock, power pop and
good ol' fashioned rock 'n' roll, Supermint just
floored
me. Catchy and powerful, of the nine songs on
offer, there's not a dud among them proving
quality beats quantity every time. Who could go
wrong with such stormers as "Ordinary
Mary", "Shouldn't It Feel Good" or
"Everytime I Wake Up"? Filled with
thick riffs and a big bottom end, these guys are
the shit. Call me highly impressed.
