Counting Crows - July 17, 1999; Kalamazoo State Theatre, Kalamazoo, MI

Heather and I left around 12:30 Chicago time to head for Kalamazoo. The traffic was terrible and we ended up getting there at 5pm Michigan time. We listened to CC all the way there of course, which made it more bearible. We parked about a block from the theatre. The theatre looked really cool from the outside...kinda old fashioned. In big red letters, the marque said "TONIGHT: COUNTING CROWS 8pm SOLD OUT." I was so excited about finally seeing them again that wanted to take a picture but I felt like a geek. The tour buses were parked right out front of the theatre and they were still unloading stuff. As we walking toward the theatre, who should pass by but Mr. Dave Bryson!!! He was wearing his trademark gray shirt and jeans and looking very tan. What a way to start the evening!. :) I nudged my friend and she said "What, who's that?" I just had to say something. So of course I said something stupid. "Hey, aren't you're Dave Bryson,?" He said, "Yeah" and walked away. Oops. I think i scared him! There was a pretty big line already at the theatre. That's what we get for coming so late! I was hoping to find some folderites or other online people that were on the mailing list for the Kzoo show. I didn't recognize anyone. But then I saw this girl wearing a CC t-shirt, the one with Matt's drawing. I had talked to this girl, Anna, online the night before and she said she would be wearing that shirt. I had also explained to her that we might be arriving late, and I was afraid of not getting good seats, so she said she would let us cut in line. I had Heather go to the end of the line and I went up to the girl..and sure enough it was Anna! She had been there since about noon. She was second in line. Somehow she let us cut in line with her. I felt really really bad, because everyone had been waiting so long and they were yelling at everyone else who tried to cut. So i just sat there quietly. Oh well. I wasn't about to give up that prime spot in line! A little while later, there was a huge commotion as Adam, Charlie, and Dan came out of the backstage area. They just stood there talking to everyone. I ran over there and got my first glimpse of the guys. Adam was wearing his Gigolo Aunts shirt and jeans. He looked like he stepped back in time to the AAEA era, short hair/dreds and no facial hair. Charlie still has his face fuzz and Dan wasn't shiny. :) Heather, not really a familiar with the band, was curious to see what the guys looked like and went up to get a glimpse. When she came back she made a remark about Adam as the "strange" looking one and almost got us kicked out of line! A short while later, I saw David Immergluck and Ben, both who walked by unnoticed. Some folderites walked by and said the password we had to find each other at the shows. I ran after them and found them in line. It was neat to meet people after talking to them online. I only wish I had gotten to talk to them more. Oh well. 7 pm was approaching, so I went back into my place in line. Heather had gone off to get food and hadn't come back yet. It made me really nervous! I was about to go in without her! hehe. But she showed up just in time.
They finally opened the doors at about 7:20. We got through the frisking and they let me in with my camera. :) We ran inside to the stage. Front row baby! :) We had about an hour to wait for the Gigolo Aunts to come on. The theatre was really small and ornate, from what I could tell in the dark anyway. There were seats, a balcony with more seats, and an open area/pit in front of the stage which is where we were of course. Finally, Adam came out to introduce the Gigolo Aunts. He was acting really goofy. He said that he likes to come out right away and hear cheers for him because it's all about "me, me, me." Then he proceeded to say that the Gigolo Aunts are on his label, he's known them a long time, they're from Boston, etc... The Gigolo Aunts rocked!!! They played lots from their new album, including Half a Chance, Everyone Can Fly, The Big Lie, C'mon, C'mon, The Big Lie, You'd Better Get Yourself Together Baby, Rest Assured, and Super Ultra Wicked Mega Love. They also played Where I Find My Heaven at audience suggestion (someone yelled, "play that song from Dumb and Dumber.") David Gibbs did lot of talking between songs, explaing the meaning behind the, then repeatedly introducing the songs as, "and it goes something like this." I could see Adam watching the performance from backstage. I sang along to all the songs and Dave Gibbs made eye contact with me a lot, smiling to see that I actually knew the words. :) Charlie joined them on Everything is Wrong. Adam, Charlie, Ben, and Dan joined them for a rockin cover of So You Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star, which ended their set. I was mesmorized watching Adam sing this song. Wow. I took some pictures of the guys during this song.
Then we had to wait for CC to set up. Heather went and got something to drink, because it was so darn hot. I didn't think she'd make it back alive, because everyone was pushing and shoving! Finally, the lights dimmed and "A Magical Mystery Tour" came on to signal to arrival of Counting Crows. At that time, I was slammed against the stage, as the crowd pushed from behind. ouch! Like a geek, I wrote down the setlist:
Mr. Jones
AOTS
St. Robinson
Recovering
Mercury
Omaha
Speedway
Another Horsedreamer's Blues
Round Here
HYSML?
Hangin' Around
Rain King
Murder of One

Encore:

Sullivan Street
A Long December
Sweet Home Alabama
I stood right at the stage in between Adam and David Immergluck. I could see David's setlist right in front of us. Adam wore a blue shirt that said "Be nice" and cut-off gray pants/shorts and black combat boots, again looking like he stepped back into the AAEA era. He was really goofy. The first thing he said was "Hand up!" in a silly voice which he said repeatedly throughout the show. Here's a rundown of the show:
Mr. Jones -- The electric version. Never thought I'd hear them play it this way again! Wow! Started out with the slow intro and "so you wanna be a rock n' roll star" then proceeded into the rockin' album version! The crowd went crazy!
Angels of the Silences --They went right into this song after Mr. Jones. Just like the album version, very energized!
St. Robinson -- Adam described this as the last song on the new album. He said the album would be out in the middle of October. I LOVE this song! Definitely my favorite new song so far. I sang a long as best as I could and again the girl behind me asked how i knew the words, and I mouthed "bootlegs"
Recovering the Satellites--This song is so mesmorizing in concert, especially when they turn on the mirror ball. Awesome!
Mercury -- Adam explained meaning of song. "This is a song about a truly messed up chick. The kinda chic that is so messed up that she messes you up. It's either that or you were already so messed up to be even dealing with a chick like this. That's probably more likely the case. You know, like, when you're so just completely addicted to a woman who is so.... bad. Like things got inside her and bent and twisted and things inside her wrapped and twisted around the bent and twisted things... and then when you get near her, she reaches out and grabs you and bends and twists and it's so... f**ked... up. But you're just so stuck with it. And you need it... really, really bad. And she says one thing and does another and she changes all the time because she's just like mercury." Wow. I also loved watching Dave B. play guitar! Such a twangy, intense, and sensual song. After this song, Adam introduced David Immergluck, saying they used to live together, that he played mandolin and peddle steel on their first two albums, and that he thought it would be much more fun if David joined them on tour this time around! He then said that this is the goofball tour, after having the mopey and recovering from mopey tour.
Omaha -- Introduced as " a song from the mopey album as opposed to the recovering from mopey album and not the goofball album and it's called Omaha. " Charlie rocked on the accordian! He stood up on the speakers right in front of us with Adam.
Speedway -- Another new song, slower, but absolutely beautiful. Adam prefaced the song by saying it is a sad song and that it is about "when you have to get out of something, and you keep telling yourself you have to get out, but you kind of have trouble doing it. "
Another Horsedreamer's Blues -- They added this to the setlist at the last minute. Adam teased Charlie for not being ready to play the song. They rarely play this song live, so it was great to hear!
Round Here -- Awesome and powerful, and as usual, one of the highlights of the show. Adam sang some new alternate lyrics. " Come on back to me. It's been a long time. I've been waiting here.... I don't wanna be locked in my room." He also added the beginning of Goodnight Elisabeth plus repeated "You're the queen of California, baby." He sang " da da da da" repetively with Dan which was incredible. Adam got very emotional and intense during this song, closing his eyes as he sang.
HYSML? -- Introduced as "Have seen me mopey?" Adam explained that the band took the accoustic and electric versions and "mashed them up together." I love the new version. David Immergluck really rocked on this song! During this song, Adam gave me a high five! :)
Hangin' Around -- Adam said this will most likely be the first single/video off new album. The Gigolo Aunts helped out with the "complex and intense clapping part." "Let the games begin!" Adam shouted at the start of the song. A really catchy, fun song. Adam was dancing around, doing the twist and Egyptian dance. :) Adam said he has been trying to teach David Immergluck all the rock and rock moves, including rock star jumps and swinging arm guitar moves. David demonstrated some for us.
Rain King -- "Ahh, you'll recognize it," Adam introduced the song. A favorite song of mine and always awesome live! The alternate lyrics included repetition of "Have you seen your mother, baby, standing in the shadows." He continued with "Have you seen the shadows covering everything. And when I think of everything. And when I think of anything. And if I think of anyone... And if I could be silent, I would close my eyes and wait until the last train passes by... When I think of heaven, I think of you.... "
A Murder of One -- Broke right into this song. Crowd went wild! AWESOME! Included the "Been to Paris, been to Rome" alternate lyrics. I got so tired and hot jumping up and down at Adam's commands to "Get Up!, but it was so much fun!
The band went offstage and we waited for their return for what seemed like an eternity! Just before they came out, we had started clapping in unison. Adam said, "Funny, we just were going to come back out when you started doing that!"
Sullivan Street -- Introduced as Thunder Road. One of my favorite songs of late, it is so mesmorizing live!
A Long December -- Adam's only turn at the piano, always a beautiful and emotional song and wonderful way to close the show. He first tried to play "Cold as Ice" and Matt and Charlie tried to help. It was hilarious! He called the Gigolo Aunts to come out "to finish the show in style." Dave Gibbs came out a little to early and sang some of the "nah nah nahs."
Sweet Home Alabama -- What a way to end the show! Adam said that he and Dave wrote it and introduced it as being from their second album and being called "Second Helping." This is the first time the band has played this song live and it rocked! "Pretty good for our first try," Adam commented at the end. Adam sang, "Watergate pisses me off so much" instead of "Watergate does not bother me." hehe. The Gigolo Aunts helped out in this spontaneous show closer. WOW.
The guys left the stage with Adam saying "Bye. See you all next year I hope!" It better be sooner than that! What a show. I didn't want it to end. I was right at the stage, singing every word. All of the guys seemed to be having a great time! Adam was right stood right in front of us the majority of the show, making eye contact, up on the speakers, and at one point, almost fell down on us! I also really enjoyed David Immergluck; he's a great addition to the band and their sound. I hope he continues to play with them! I didn't get to see much of Dan or Matt as they were at the other end of the stage. Charlie was really into the show while Dave and Ben were pretty subdued, but seemed to be enjoying themselves.
After the show, I was shaking and very sore. I waited at the stage to try and get a setlist. The roadie promised to get me one, but when he started to hand it to me, some guy behind me literally ripped it out of my hands!! The roadie yelled at him to give it back but to no avail. ARGH!
I finally made myself walk out of the theatre. I bought a t-shirt then headed outside to wait for the band. It was raining. In no time at all, I saw a huge crowd gathering around the tour bus. It was Adam, signing autographs, taking pictures, and chatting with fans. I decided to go find the other guys in the band first. Steve from the Gigolo Aunt's walked by and I stopped him for an autograph. He seemed surprised that I knew who he was. I told that I really enjoyed their set. He signed "Right on, Steve" on his pic in my Gigolo Aunts album booklet. He borrowed my pen to sign some other autographs. Then Dave walked by, and I stopped him as well. He said I was using the wrong kind of pen for autographs. He seemed in a hurry, but he signed the front of my RTS cd booklet. Then I made my way over toward the tour bus. Matt was there talking to some of the folderites. He also signed my cd booklet then used my pen to sign other autographs. He said he had to go call his wife, and preceded to walk off with my pen. Matt stole my pen! hehe :) Dan was standing in the middle of the street surrounded by a pretty big group of fans. I had him sign the back of my cd booklet. It was still raining, and we'd had a long day, so Heather said she wanted to go wait in the car. I still wanted to get some more autographs. Charlie was standing by the bus door with no one around him. By this time, my cd booklet was getting really wet, so I had him sign his picture on the page for the lyrics to RTS. He pulled me over to the side to get out of the rain. Then, I went over to David Immergluck who was standing by a tree near the bus talking to a few fans. He also signed the front of my cd booklet. The elusive Ben was no where to be found. Finally, I went up to Adam, who was still surrounded by a throng of people. I just stood there listening to him talk to some other fans and folderites. He was letting people take pictures with him. I just had him sign his pictures on the page for the lyrics to Miller's Angels. I stood around listening a little longer, then I thought I should get to the car where Heather was waiting. I really didn't want this night to end. I wish I had chatted with the guys in the band more and gotten my picture taken with them. Oh well. Next time! I can't get over how generous they are to their fans. I said good-bye to a few folderites I had met, then headed to the car. I was still shaking, so excited and overwhelmed from the concert. WOW. I was so jittery that I had trouble driving and ran a stop sign! That was definitely the BEST concert I have ever been to. After nearly two years, it was so amazing to see my favorite band again in such an intimate setting and surrounded by other hardcore fans. This was my third time seeing the band, and the experience keeps getting better with every show. WOW. What an intense, emotional, fun, and memorable evening...everything I had hoped for!!! :)
