Ecology Page: Dave's Bargain Basement

This page contains links to articles, one book review, and several interesting ecology-related sites.

Articles:

I'm planning on adding links to other interesting articles soon. For now, here is a fascinating article entitled "Amish Society" which was written in 1980 by an Ohio State sociology professor named Thomas Foster who lives in Mansfield, Ohio near a large Amish community. The article discusses aspects of the philosophy of ecologist E.F. Schumacher as outlined in such works as Small Is Beautiful: Economics As If People Mattered, A Guide for the Perplexed and others, and explores how much his ideas have in common with Amish ways. If you find the article interesting and want to read more, here are two additional links to Tom Foster articles on the Amish:

If you're interested in books on the Amish, by the way, you can click here to see what Amazon lists. The nice thing about Amazon is that they even list out-of-print books and others that they may not carry. You can then use this information to search for the items on used-book sites like bibliofind.com

Book Review:

Click here to read a review of Paul Hawken's The Ecology of Commerce written by Scott London of Insight & Outlook, a weekly cultural affairs program on NPR. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in how business can be transformed into an enterprise that works with nature instead of against it without compromising the competitive edge that companies must have to survive.
