The 2 new George Michael singles - "A Different Corner" and "I knew you were waiting" - a duet with Aretha Franklin, reached the top of American Parade.
"Faith", his first solo album, was the bigeior sucesso comercial de 1988: was a collosal commercial success with six singles at the top of American and it sold 14 million copies.
The song "I want your sex" was censored.
In "American Music Awards", GM won in 3 categories, two of which were contraversial because they were in categories traditionally dominated by black musicians.
This success made it possible for him to with "giants" of the black music industry like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Frankin...
After 2 years, GM returned to the Hit Parade with the single "Praying for time" and the album "Listen without prejudice", in 1990.
In 1990, GM took part of Rock in Rio II, in Brazil.
The megashow was staged on Maracana Stadium and was a big sucess! He sang "Killer" (Adamski) and "Papa was a Rolling Stone" (Temptations) and it was really great.
His band was composed of 8 players and 3 backing-vocalists like Lynne Mabry, who sang"Calling You" and "Back to life" (Soul II Soul).
The next songs were "Iīm your man", "Ainīt no stoppinī us now" (McFadden & Whithead), 2 Elton John, "Fame" (David Bowie), Gladys Night and Rufus music.
For the finale, he sang "Careless Whisper" and "Freedom ī90". A great performance, really!
The next album was "Listen without prejudice" - more personal a less commercial. GM refused to do any promotion or marketing.
He was upset with Sony Music, and had many difficulties to break his contract. This fight continued for 5 years.
In 1991, George sang with Elton John "Donīt let the sun go down on me", which went to Number 1 in 16 countries....
Later, he contributed to the AIDS Project "Red, Hot & Dance", with the single "Too Funky", in 1992, without promotion.
In 1993, the album "Five Live" contained songs from Queen (from his performance on Freddie Mercury Tribute) and "Calling You" ("Bagdad Cafe" Theme). The album had also the partipation of Lisa Stansfield.
"Older" was the first album recorded with his new record company, Aegean. Itīs a great album, that sold very well around the world, but not too well in USA.
After not making videos for a long time, GM changed his mind - there are lovely videos for some songs of "Older".
George didn't tour, but recorded MTV Unplugged instead, for the American market, but without excessive promotion.
Older went to the 6th place on Billboard!!!
Around the world, "Older" sold more than 4.5 million copies.
April 1998, George Michael was arrested in Los Angeles, in a public bathroom of Will Rogers Memorial Park. It was a "scandal" and George admits heīs gay (and that he has a boyfriend, the american Kenny Goss). He had to do services to community.
After that, he was inspired to record the single "Outside", with a great video, laughing of all situation. Both the music and the video was a great success!
Because of the fight with Sony Music, George had to release 2 albums: "Ladies & Gentlemen - The Best of George Michael" (with the big hits of his solo carreer) and "The Best of Wham! - If you were there" (the greatest hits of Wham!)
In 1999, Michael released "Songs From The Last Century", singing his fav songs from fav artists (from all decades), with great reviews.
In the following years, George Michael took part of some concerts (like Pavarotti & Friends, Net Aid and more) and some duets (Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige...), but didnīt released a new album for a while.
In 2002 he released 2 singles "Freeek!", with a really expensive video, and "Shoot the dog", making fun of the relation of George W. Bush and Tony Blair. The video shows Tony Blair as a Bush's poodle and also they dancing a tango.
On March 2003, George records a new version for the Don McLean's famous song "The Grave" (1971), about the Vietam war.
Georgeīs version was included on "Hope" album (many artists), a benefit of children in Iraq. This same album includes a version of George Michael's "Faith" recorded by Mrs. Dynamite.
Finally in 2004, after so many years of wait, a new album was released: "Patience"... and we all hope it will be a big success! :)
