I knew Andy had been around awhile. Andy is the man large and in charge of Deep South Records. Marcy Playground appeared on the complition "Deep I" before they were signed to EMI. So I asked him if he could give me a time line of sorts, to plot the rise of the band...this is what he had to say...
"...When I saw them in February
of '96 the album was already done and had been since at least November or
so of'95.... Jared was the drummer at that show... He was out of the band
shortly thereafter replaced by Dan, who was already friends of Dylan's from
their Jazz circles... There was talk for a while about adding another
guitarist... not sure if they ever tried it live, but it never panned
out...In the fall of '96 they began playing outside of New York... My
roommate at the time was booking them and had them do like 3-4 runs down to
the Southeast.... Playing places like Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte,
Richmond, etc.... Mostly with other Deep bands... While either sleeping on
my floor or all cramming into a room the guys were definitely roughing
it... We had sold like 200 copies of the EMI release in Raleigh alone just
off of them playing here... You could definitely sense that they were
really reacting with the fans.... Sometime in the late fall of '96 KCRW in
LA began playing Sex & Candy off of "Deep 1" and in early '97 the band went
out there and did "Morning is Ecalectic" or whatever it's called.... It
just started to happen.... Jimmie from Jimmie's Chicken Shack who was
friends with the Almighty Senators from Deep 1, heard S&C and feel in love
with Marcy and his roommate started booking them in Washington DC and
stuff... They also had Marcy open for them a few times up there....
The record was silently released in late January, actually I think it was
early February of '97.... EMI just let it silently work itself, not really
doing much with it... When 91X in San Diego started playing them and it
started to react.... EMI almost folded simultaneously... after a few months
of down time, Capitol has now picked the ball up and started running with
it..."
