Six Feet Under

In 1993, Obituary's groundbreaking guitarist, Allen West, approached then Cannibal Corpse vocalist, Chris Barnes, with a demo tape of left over Obituary songs. At that time Barnes was working on the legendary Cannibal Corpse album The Bleeding, but he still gave the tape a listen. Alomost instantly Barnes began writing lyrics, he was majorly impressed by the material that was recorded.

Greg Gall (drums) and former Death member Terry Butler (bass) hooked up with Barnes and West in 1995 and the newly formed side project called Six Feet Under began rehearsing.

A record deal from Metal Blade Records was offered and the band kindly accepted this gesture. Their debut album,Haunted, was released in 1995 and became one of the best selling Death Metal records of all time. Even though Haunted was a slow, grinding album, and Barnes toned down his voice, fans still flocked to buy the album because of such songs as "Human Target", "Torn to the Bone", and "Suffering in Ecstacy." A tour was set up, but there were problems.

While on tour Chris Barnes parted ways with Cannibal Corpse. Corpse claims that they kicked the vocalist out while Barnes insisted that he left the band. Six Feet Under went from a side project to a full time band.

I had the pleasure of seeing SFU twice while on their 1st tour at the Roxy. On that day I bought Haunted and gave it a good listen. I was extremely impressed by the guitar riffs and the deepness of Barnes' voice. I went to the show and I was even more impressed! In March of 1996 SFU again visited the Roxy with the popular Death Metal act Internal Bleeding and Immolation. They performed 2 new songs, "Drowning" and "Insect." The band also covered the classic Judas Priest song "Grinder". It was announced proudly on that night, by Barnes, that Six Feet Under would be releasing a new EP. The band, on that tour, went around the world giving Death Metal fans a very memorable show.

In 1996 the band released and an EP titled Alive and Dead. This new offering included the 2 new studio cuts, "Insect" and "Drowning" and the Priest cover along with 4 live songs from their 1st tour.

After a one year absence from the Death Metal scene, Sis Feet Under released their long awaited 2nd full length album, Warpath, in October of 1997. Barnes experimented with his vocal delivery on the new album, giving almost every song a new dimension. Most Death Metal fans gave a thumbs down to Warpath. Many old school Death Metal fans began calling Chris Barnes a sell-out for messing around on the vocal delivery and having a pro marijuana stance. In my opinion Warpath, even with some large flaws, is a great album.

Six Feet Under shot their 1st ever music video for the song "Manipulation" and it was shown on the Canadian music channel MuchMusic. The band once again went out touring for the new album in Europe with opening act Vader.

What does the future hold for this Death Metal heavyweight? Most definitely a new album will be recorded, but can they regain the hugely popular stance they once held?? We all have to wait and see, but I am sure that SFU will be around for a very long time.
