Review on Movie Mirror (US) : This hour-long video is a very slick package indeed. I (Alice King) know I may get stoned for this, but I think there is a big U2 influence going on here (ha ha??) - from Jon's Bono-like appearance (ha ha??), to the sound on a few songs, to the look of the look of the videos (In fact, U2 mainstay Phil Janou directed one of the videos).
Slickness (and U2-ness) are not a bad thing - to me, at least - and this video delivers stylish videos intercut with soundbites from the band. "Keep The Faith," shot on New York City's streets, opens the video. It's a very sophisticated clip with grainy color and moody shots which show the band in new light. They're not just those guys who jump around on stage. The lovely "Bed Of Roses" follows - surprise, it's another "concept" video, not just a concert clip. (This song reprised in Spanish ( ! ) later in the video, with unintentionally hilarious results. The same footage is used, merely re-edited, so Jon's lips seem to synch with the Spanish words. Make me crack up! )
Highlights are clips for "I Believe," with its fish-eye lens and futuristic look, an unplugged version of "I Wish Everyday Could Be Like Chritmas," the mini-movie "Dyin' Ain't Much Of A Livin'," the headbangin' song of pshcho love "If I Was Your Mother," and a spontaneous, rooftop version of "Sleep When I'm Dead" - Tico uses stair railings as a drum set.
Throughout the tape, the bandmembers talk about how important it has been for them to stay together, move forward and "keep the faith" in themselves. This attitude pervades Keep The Faith and balances the slickness of the visuals nicely, keeping Bon Jovi from seeming insincere. They're still those guys from New Jersey we've come to love. - Alice King - Movie Mirror
