Garbage started out with three musicians from Madison, Wisconsin - Steve Marker, Butch Vig, and Duke Erikson. Steve Marker first saw Shirley Manson (lead singer) while watching an Angelfish music video on MTV's 120 Minutes. It was playing at 2 am and he happened to be watching. Soonafter, Butch Vig gave Shirley a phone call and asked her about singing for their band. After finding out who Butch Vig was she became interested in the proposition. Later on, Shirley was touring the U.S. with Angelfish, which was "dissolving", so she went to audition for the band. Steve, Butch, and Duke listened to her, but it didn't go too well as Shirley was unaccustomed to singing alone with little guidance. However, the group eventually decided to form a band together when Shirley visited the three studio buffs once again a few weeks later. Thus, Garbage was formed in 1994 and they released their self-titled debut album in August 1995. Their sophomore album, Version 2.0, was released in 1998, followed by Beautifulgarbage in 2001. They have also recorded songs for the Romeo + Juliet movie soundtrack and the James Bond flick, The World Is Not Enough. The band name was born after an observer stated "This sounds like garbage!" while Butch Vig was playing back samples and loops. |
