120 Minutes Interview with Marcy Playground Sunday Dec 21,1997

{Part 1}

Matt Pinfield(MP):...Welcome back to 120 minutes. I'm Matt Pinfield and right now joining me are John and Dan from the band Marcy Playground. Guys, welcome, good to have you here.

John Wozniak(JW): Thanks Matt, hi.

MP: Anyway, let me ask you about the origin of the band name, because people want to know where thats from. It has some background from where you're from originally...Minneapolis.

JW: Right. Yeah. Marcy Playground comes from the school I went to when I was..ummm..about, lets see from ... K through 4th grade. Marcy Open School in Minneapolis. I used to write all these stories about Marcy Playground and stuff like that later on in life.

MP: So it was one of those situations where it was a name, something you held on to for a long time.....Dylan, whose not here right now, and you have an interesting story about how you were reunited after years from going to school together. Can you tell us a little about that.

JW: Yeah...ummm... Actually I didn't go to school with Dylan, because he went to a totally different school in Minneapolis.

MP: But you're from the same town.

JW: We're from the same place, yeah. No, we met in New York. It's a shame he's not here. Yeah, It's a shame he's not here.

MP: Isn't he driving a van back like out West so you guys can tour?

Dan Rieser (DR): We bought a van out in California. He's the one who volunteered to go pick it up and drive it back here.

JW: He got stuck.

MP: Everyone plays a different role when you have to take care of things. Right?.

DR: He's the driver of the band, right.

MP: Has he always done that?

DR: No, no, no. We all share in the driving.

MP:Thats, cool. You have to. Especially when you have to do those long, long drives, you know, I mean when you have to stay awake for ages.....We'll be talking more with the guys from Marcy Playground in just a bit....

Matt Pinfield (MP): I'm hanging out right now with John and Dan from Marcy Playground...Now you reside in New York, or New York outskirts. Tell me a bit about how you came together as a band. Because people find it interesting, the whole, New York music scene.

John Wozniak (JW): Dan?

Dan Rieser (DR): Uhh...Lets see here....ummm... well...from what I understand, John's been writing these songs for quite a long time. And he hooked up with Dylan, who's the third member of the band, who isn't here. He hooked up with Dylan I guess about three years ago. And a mutual friend introduced them. They started playing together. Ummm.... Dylan, who I've actually known for about ten years, we've been playing music together for.... for yeah, about ten years in many different situations. He first told me about the band, he gave me some tapes, and went and checked out a few shows... and I became like a... a fan pretty much immediatly....and then uhh... I guess they were having ..uhh..drummer problems for a lack of a better term...and Dylan asked me to come down and do some playing with the band...and did a couple gigs with them...and thats

JW: That was like two and a half years ago

DR: Thats when we became a band.

JW: Thats when the genesis really started. MP: Thats cool. We'll be back more with a video from Marcy Playground. But until then, check out the Top Ten Singles in Alternative Music this week and look who's at number one. (*points at John and Dan*)
