I don't think that if a quality underground band makes t big that it will infact corrupt them, but I have seen it all too many times. I don't feel that I am some how selfish and think that all bands should remain unknown for my "elite" use. When bands are underground than there is a better chance that their fans will understand and repsect their music more. Mainstream bands (while it isn't their fault) lose most personal intensity if any two-bit teeny bopper can claim to be a "fan." Underground bands are a lot more down to earth and on a level people can u derstand and relate to a lot more. Plus, they are not afraid to experiment or try something different, for they don't need to fear losing record sales or public favor. Being underground has a lot more freedom and is one of the few areas in life that freedom is actually endorsed. Being mainstream is like a prison in a way. Having to follow the rules of uptight corporate record labels and contracts...all the crap that m kes music less of an art form. Grant it, not all mainstream bands "sell-out" or suck, but the majority of them do. I refuse to listen to radios or watch MTV for it is a waste of time. You can't blame bands for everything. A lot of influence comes from corporate America. Major record labels screw bands 8 ways from Sunday and hold them to their contracts a lil bit too much. Yet, if the bands wouldn't put themselves in the position, it would have never of happened in the first place. Regardless of who you blame the mainstream will cont. to suck, but on the bright side... it makes the underground a lot more comforting. |

I agree with your comment that people need to post original opinions instead of just saying that your page is cool (that sort of goes without saying doesn't it?!?). After reading the survey page, I must also say that many people seem to have complimented MTV's sucking ability. I mean, to say that they can take a 1 -incher is, to me, a manner of saying that they suck well. If they'd stuck to what I thought their original intent was (to show music videos of all genres), they would be doing great. But instead, it seems like the majority of the time I flip through there, they don' even have music videos on. They're too busy playing "The Real World" (the name itself is an oxymoron), "Road Rules" or some other worthless show that has no entertainment value whatsoever. (I must admit that "Beavis and Butthead" and "Daria" are at least midly amusing, but I don't want to see marathons of them on a "MUSIC" channel.) And on the rare occasions when they show a video of a lesser-known artist, they screw up the moment by next playing a video by Puff Daddy or one of his affiliates. They've tur ed into Rap/R&B/Hip-Hop Television. It's a real shame that they don't do spots on some of the lesser-known artists because it's really difficult to gain information on underground bands unless you go to the right clubs, and then you just have to hope that the song you heard is an accurate representation of their musical style. MTV's name is indicative of a channel that would cater to obscure types of music, but MTV sold into the popularity of the crap that people-who-can't-think-for-themselves-and-have-to- isten-to-what-their-friends-are-listening-to dance to when they go to clubs. I must further add that I'm not particularly fond of VH-1, but at least they've appeared to have stuck to their original intent of playing music that fits more in the lable of ad lt contemporary than anything else. They also occasionally have some interesting "Behind the Music" spots that provide insight into artists. Their programming is at least related to music, unlike MTV who get a stupid idea to appeal to the stereotypical co lege drone and broadcast the inane show for too many seasons to even keep track of, and then have marathons of the show. If that weren't bad enough, MTV has had different casts of "The Real World" get together in one room and bag on each other. (Yes, I re lly DETEST that show.) I think I'll finish this rant because I don't believe that particular show needs any more of my criticism. (It's self-explanatory!) |
