When it comes to SMASHED GLADYS, the standard promohype vocabulary just won’t do.

"Blazing twin-guitar riffs," "gutsy vocals," "rude and raucous lyrics"--it’s all true, but it sounds false. Such stock phrases don’t cut to the heart of this band. Like, where’s sense of sheer abandon, the mockery of convention, the joie de la rock? Let’s get some dirt into these bio grooves!

But first, the facts: SOCIAL INTERCOURSE, Elektra’s debut album by SMASHED GLADYS, is ten tracks’ worth of unadulterated streetlevel rock and roll, including such potent and provocative tunes as "Hard To Swallow," "Legs Up," "Lick It Into Shape," and "Sermonette." The Album was produced by Ric Browde and mixed by Michael Wagener. Sessions took place at Bear Tracks in Suffern, New York; inexplicably, the building still stands. The rest we’ll leave to the five no-bullshit New Yorkers known as SMASHED GLADYS. (All quotes are, like, for real.)

How and when did Smashed Gladys get together?

"Seventy years ago. Our grandparent started the band, we just inherited it."

"Actually, I started the band. But I didn’t know how to write songs, and was forced to hire these other people--whoever they are."

"No one really started the band. We just kind of found each other. It probably had something to do with our past lives."

"The truth is, we’re all just losers from other bands, desperate for one last shot at the top."

How did Smashed Gladys get signed to Elektra?

"We’re still trying to figure that one out!"

"Human error...a fuckup in the systen. We fell through the cracks, and here we are!"

What was it like recording Social Intercourse?

"Don’t ask these guys about the sessions. All they did was play board hockey the whole time!"

Where has Smashed Gladys gigged over the past three years?

"Every club in New York: The World, Danceteria, Cat Club, L’Amour, you name it."

"Yeah, we were the first new New York rock bands, which you probabaly didn’t know existed. Not a new wave band or a hardcore band, but a rock and roll band. Since we were the first of the new New York bands to play venues in New York City, it was then possible for other bands like Warrior Soul, Circus of Power, Battalion, Law And Order, and Princess Pang to do the same."

"We toured with Cheap Trick and Blue Oyster Cult. We played L.A. with Poison. We opened for Cheap Trick at West Point--Those cadets are psychopathic rock and rollers!"

Who writes the songs in Smashed Gladys?

"Our Manager!"

"No, we all contribute...Sally writes about 75% of the lyrics."

"They’re open to interpretation, definitely tongue-in-cheek. I call it ‘knees-up rock and roll.’ Because of the attitude and the way we play, no one’s gonna say, ‘Those guys are serious!’"

Describe the ideas behind some of Smashed Gladys’ songs.

"There was an idea behind ‘Eye Of The Storm,’ but I forgot it!"

"Yeah, that’s what happens when you take drugs. Just say no, kids!"

What’s the Smashed Gladys’ view of the current rock scene?

"There’s a lot of good bands out there: The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin--I can’t wait for that new album--Whitney Houston..."

"Motorhead...Slayer...Bananarama..."

(Still more!)

"What made a band like Led Zeppelin or the Doors great was that the music was them, instead of synthesizers and producers and stuff. Those bands just did it, and their records are full of wonderful errors and clinkers. It’s true to what rock music should be."

"We have the same thing. On the CD of Social Intercourse, you can hear every single mistake!"

What does Smashed Gladys hope to achieve in the year ahead?

"Nothing! Hey, that’s not easy--you don’t wanna set your standards too high, right? You spend your whole life trying to do nothing and just when you think you’ve got it, something comes up!"

"Total world domination. We start tonight at the Lismar Lounge on First Avenue."

"We’d like to play live, but we’ve alreadt been blackballed by every club owner and promoter in the country. Hey, don’t tell Elektra, okay?"

"That’s cool. If SMASHED GLADYS doesn’t make it, we’re gonna start a cover band!"

Yeah, but what would you cover?

"SMASHED GLADYS songs---that's all we know how to play anyway!"
