The Unifying Themes of
Sex, Death and Religion
Something just goes crazy inside
me when I listen to Botch. This CD just did it for me. They are full
of energy, tight and creative. O Fortuna
(a cover song taken from Carl Orffs Opera) makes me quiver with
excitement. They're hardcore enthusiasm gives a rush to the
anticipating crowd. Their poetic lyrics sung energeticly matching the
rhythm of the jazzy but fast drum beats seem to come to the band
naturally. The second song on the album Third Part in a Tragedy is fast and harsh, the chorus stomps the words into
your head with the repeditive kickdrum. Of course their going to be
better live, but this is pretty close to getting everything you want
in a show at home. If you want repetition, then don't get this album,
if you want creative different hardcore, then get it.

Kiss It Goodbye
She Loves Me, She Loves Me
Not CD (Revelation)
I guess it's pretty well known
that Kiss It Goodbye contains two ex-members of Deadguy, as well as
ex-members from other well known bands. However, if you didn't
already know it, putting this CD on will remind you of the Deadguy
connection. It took me a few listens until I got into this, but now
that that has happened, I'm really glad that I got this CD. Kiss It
Goodbye are one of the more innovative bands that I've heard in a
while. Sure, there's hard, grindy songs like 'Helvetica' and
'Manthing', however they mix it up with slower, but no less heavy
numbers like 'We'll Burn That Bridge When We Get To It'. The music is
heavy, and it seems really off-kilter, almost creepy in a way. The
vocals range from whispering to all out Deadguy-style screaming. This
is a long CD, 9 songs in about 45 minutes, yet the songs never seem
too long. The CD and booklet designs are excellent, typical of any
Revelation release. I highly recommend this release. It has hardly
left my CD player since I bought it.

Brand New Unit
Diddley Squat
First off, the cover of this album
totally suits the music to go with it, colourful and full of energy.
It's easy to get carried away with fast tempo energetic punk and you
can't prevent yourself from humming along every now and the, even if
you haven't heard the album much, you still know the tune of how it
goes. This is definately the CD to drum your hands to. Song number
two Deep Freeze
begins in a double intro
style hit in the face, I got drawn in and drawn in fast with this
one. I love the beginning of song five, Asshole, Stereo Control Freak with it's rhythmic guitar then introducing
in the drums in a tight pause, the song's lyrics tell you how alcohol
can turn you into something people don't want you to be. I really
liked this CD and I do want others to support BNU because they
deserve the praise, after all... they do have a great e-mail adress:
bnu@groupie.org...just don't have sugar before listening to Diddley
Squat.

Swingers...a great movie. A group
of guys strolling the clubs in L.A looking for some fine "babies"
(good looking women) and stumbling along the way with their hockey
video games, smokes and alcohol. Ok, I'll admit it, these guys had
great hair and great clothes, but the story was funny and cute, it
was a bite out of the dating scene in the 90's. Big Voodoo Daddy
shows up in one of the clubs their in in a scene. I would recommend
this movie, not because one of the actors is cute, but because it's a
funky independent-style movie with an artistic angle.

Converge
Petitioning The Empty Sky
(re-released on
Equal Vision
Records)
I've been wanting this album for a
really long time, and when I finally got it, it was completely worth
the long wait. Maybe it's because the first two songs on the album
remind me of Botch, the screamy vocals and fast spazmic rhythms. I'd
definately qualify this band as a hardcore band, but they have so
many elements to their sound. I'd say the first two songs are my
favorite ones on the album, I love how the whole song has so many
different parts to it, some fast hard-hitting parts to other parts
with the usual rhythmic guitar and crazy drums. When the end of the
song just keeps on building up the speed, I can't help but get really
into it and wiggle my feet. I'd definately say this is the album to
buy if your a hardcore fan, and into the heavy stuff.

The Murder City
Devils
(self-titled cd/lp)
This was another cd that I was
planning on buying for a long time, but I'm certainly glad that I
finally bought it. The Murder City Devils have a quality in their
music that I've never heard before in any other band. They have an
oldschool rock-y punk base, but there are elements of 50's race car
sounding music, which the organ ads to. They put on a great show,
including the lighting of an organ on fire, while being played. Only
this great band would sing a song about how sexy Iggy Pop is.
