Catching On
Ahhh, the perfect breakup song, just when you need it most. This
heartfelt rocker is about continuously trying to make ends meet
in a relationship with repeated failure. The lines of this song
can be looked at from many different standpoints, but each view
is equally as powerful and heartbreaking. "Words that melt"
could be saying that the conversations the couple has to attempt
to make things better just dissolve and do not get through.
Then again, the line could be seen in a way that the terrible
words exchanged in argument hurt each other so much that the
words break each other down and do nothing but continuously
cause each other pain. The chorus, preceeded by "Now I'm
reaching out, it's true" seems to be a promise from one side of
the relationship to once for all make things work out. However,
the verses seem to me to reinforce that no matter what changes
are made, the love is better "left to die."
Can't find a reason
Can't find a way
Guess it's not you and me
Only dogs have their day
Another case of words that melt
It's not a question of right
Nightmares in broad daylight
Season crash, season burn
You survive another turn
And now I'm reaching out, it's true
(Chorus)
When you don't see me, I'm catching on to you
You don't see me
I'm catching on to you
Took a break to get that far
Like the sound from a hundred-dollar guitar
Bought from an old catalogue
Yesterday's dust and heartache
As the pieces fall like candy when you're young
And medicine when you're old
There's no reason or rhyme
Sidestepping around
On an elevator climb
(Chorus)
Another jail, another burned-out inside
Skeleton love left to die
Take whatever lies ahead
The good with the bad, and leave the rest
(Chorus)
