Wakeup Bomb is, in my opinion, one of the better from New Adventures, although it is overshadowed by the best two - Leave and Be Mine. My favourite REM song would have to be Country Feedback from Out Of Time. Exquisite. A suggestion for next week's son perhaps?

when this record was first released and i first heard it i was a little aprehensive about it being another monster. i like monster now however if the band were planning on keeping that motif. when i first heard wake up bomb it sounded like monster. howeve the more i heard it the more i loved it.great pick for the song of the week.

Hi, Firstly, the lyrics you have posted are not "The Wake Up Bomb." Secondly, as I heard it, the song has nothing to do with Oasis. It was inspired 1. By the club scene, club kids, etc...and 2. Partly a tribute to glam rock. If you listen to the lyric, it's p etty obvious. Cheers.

Well, is Stipe was bitter, look at the price os quick fame - Oasis have collapsed into mediocrity 2 albums after their first decent one and are now tearing themselves apart at the seams - REM have lost a member and produced one of the best albums of their career - and the Wake Up Bomb bashes bottom about, or something !

"I've had enough, seen enough" etc sounded like a final release sort of a song, a song to release just before they break up. on another point who thinks REM are beter than U2. I think REM my freind thinks U2

IN THE HUMBLEST OF MY OPINION THE SONG "THE WAKE UP BOMB" IS ONE OF THE BEST ROCKERS R.E.M HAVE EVER RECORDED.COMING AS IT DOES,AFTER THE DEEPLY INTROSPECTIVE AND PONDEROUS "HOW THE WEST WAS WON..." IT HAS A VERY REVITALISING EFFECT.AS FOR THE IMPLIED NAS Y COMMENTS ABOUT oasis THEY ARE THOROUGHLY DESERVED.Oasis SHOULD BE COMMITTED TO THE FLAMES OF R.E.M'S BLAZING CAREER.THREE CHEERS FOR R.E.M HIP,HIP......................

I didn't immediately realize the Oasis connection. I read an interview in an English mag w/ Mills and he denied the reporter' interpretaion of the Oasis spin on it. Going back, there are definitely lyrics that could be interpreted as slams at Oasis. The " upersonic" and "I'd like to teach the world to sing" lines. Also, I didn't see anyhting here about the "practice my T-Rex moves and make the scene." The Oasis sound has always been compared to the glam of T-Rex. P.S. Bye Bill, wish you well

And in leaving the obligatory comment on the message board, I would like to say one thing on R.E.M. V. Oasis. Eat shite, Gallaghers. R.E.M. Rocks! BTW, this is my favorite song (besides Leave) on the entire album!

There is another Oasis refrence in The Wake Up Bomb. Michael sings "I had to teach the world to sing,By the age of 21." At the age of 21 Liam Gallagher sang Shakermaker which was a blatant rip off of I'd like to teach the world to sing.

I do very much believe that this song is about Oasis. Whilst I'm prepared to admit that it may be about glam rock in general, some of the references (particularly, "tonic, supersonic, what a joke") seen far too near the mark to be co-incidence. As an ad endum, living in the UK, people rave about Oasis, despite the fact that they are clearly rubbish, and it's really nice to hear someone having a go at them. Rumours are that when Oasis supported REM in Ireland, there was major friction between the two ban s. Not a big surprise really. But this song's pretty good, though not the best on "Hi-fi".

I first heard Wake up Bomb on the MTV music awards. I loved instantly.I pefer the MTV verson to the New Adventures verson. I added it to my REM videotape that starts with the unplugged show passes through the Inaguration and ends around the Saturday Ni ht Live show. I liked how Micheal turned his back to the audience when he says" don't f**k with me at the end of Whats the Frequency Kenneth and the sensors didn't catch it.

well, as far as I know, the wake up bomb was written about glam-rock and may have had some allusions to oasis but i believe the guys when they say it wasnt neccessarily written about oasis. this should have been the first single from NAIHF but what can I ay
