Description:
Small tree up to 20 m. Bark reddish brown, fibrous, peeling in strips, Leaves linear, apex acute to rounded, 6-9 cm long x 7-8 mm wide, larger when juvenile, narrowed at the base to a short petiole about 2 mm long; midvein marked on the upper side by a prominent ribe with sloping sides about 1 mm wide and more broadly and less prominently on the lower side. Foliage buds small, about 3 mm long x 2mm in diameter, the lanceolate scales spreading. Pollen cones sessile in clusters of as many as five, cylindrical, 2-3 cm long x about 3 mm in diameter, surrounded at the base by a cluster of small sterile scales; apex of the microsporophyll triangular. Seed structure on a peduncle 3-6 mm long; receptacle formed of two fused and enlarged bracts with indistinct apices, the fertile bract about 9 mm long, the sterile bract somewhat shorter, becoming swollen fleshy abd purple on maturity, subtended by two lanceolate bracts a little more than 1 mm long; seed with its enveloping leathery scale globular, about 8 mm long x 5 mm in diameter.

Habitat:
From sea level along coastal bluff and low limestone outcrops to about 1,000 m in forests at low and median altitudes.

Distribution:
Widely distributed from Malaya to New Guinea. In the Philippines, reported from Bataan Is. Luzon: Ilocos Norte province, Burgos; Zambales province, Sta. Cruz; Quezon province, Malicboy, Guinayangan, Atimonan, Quezon National Park; Negros; Bucas; Mindanao: Davao, Perdesan; Palawan: Victoria Mtns; Puerto Princesa.
