Description:
Small tree 5-15 m high. Leaves more or less scattered, oval or slightly linear, very rounded at the apex and sometimes with a small mucro, 2.5-5 cm long x 9-11 mm wide, occasionally smaller but up to 10 cm long on saplings; midvein marked by a sharp narrow rib on the upper side 0.3 mm wide and more broadly and almost indistinctly on the lower surface, narrowed at the base to a short petiole about 2 mm long. Foliage buds small, 2-3mm long x up to 2 mm in diameter, the lanceolate scales spreading slightly. Pollen cones cylindrical, about 3 cm long including 3-10 mm with sterile scales at the base x 3-4 mm in diameter; the apex of the microsporophyll short trangular. Seed structure on a peduncle about 1 cm long; receptacle formed of two enlarged fused bracts with indistinct apices; the fertile bract about 7 mm long and the sterile bract somewhat shorter, subtended by two lanceolate sterile bracts nearly 2 mm long; seed with its leathery enveloping scale globose, about 9 mm long x 6 mm in diameter. Receptacle becoming enlarged fleshy, and red when mature.
Habitat:
In mossy forests, at about 1,400 to 2,188 m altitude.
Distribution:
In thePhilippines, apparently confined from the middle slope (Dolores side) to the summit of Mt. Banahaw in Luzon, Quezon province. Outside the Philippines, this is only known by one specimen from Gunong Beratus (Peak of Balikpapan), E. Borneo.
