Straightface
The day that Wide Swing Tremolo hit the shelves, I, of course,
was pressing my nose up against the glass door of the record
store and fogging it all up like a two year old at a candy
store. I pounced on in, hurled the disc on the counter, and
threw my wadded up money at the indie record store cashier. I
ran out the door, not bothering to get my $.47. I hopped in my
Jeep, popped in the disc, and blaring out at me like Sam
Kinneson through a bullhorn came the first track, Straightface.
I lost myself in the jumble of noise, and I'll admit, it was a
little hard on the ears at first. But the first time I was able
to hear Jay blow his lungs out on that harmonica like a madman
screaming back in the face of an oncoming tornado (makes for a
cool video, huh?) in the live setting, I was sold on this
blistering tune. From what I can make of it (although I could
be dead wrong), the song seems to be about a person that is
stuck in an environment that is filled with opposing beliefs
and viewpoints. While he disagrees with what is going on, he is
forced to remain neutral and pretend that nothing bothers him.
Call out your castaway
You'll wake up to carry in another new day
Send 'em out from your castle on high
Talk is talk, soley in your mind
Claimstake the final words
What goes around is knocking at your front door
(Chorus)
Straightface, you're rapt and high-flown for hire
Make believe you breathe out
Everyone you take
The viewpoints slam
Make sure to stick around to know you missed it
Proclaimed from protective stances
You wallow in the well that you've fallen into
You demonize what you don't understand
Doubts surround your heavy, heavy hand
(Chorus)
Better keep your bags packed
Keep your nose clean
Check the shelf-life and date
Reticent gonna soon realize
Showgirls magazines define your mind's eye
You're a rough draft, you're old news
You're a grifter with a funny little hat
(Chorus)
