Chapter 7 The Coming of Success At the beginning of 1990 Flea divorced his wife and the band participated on Pretty Woman's soundtrack with a song called "Show me your soul" (if you watch the movie you'll see that the song is almost at the beginning when Julia Roberts meets his roommate). That year in june, they edited two videotapes which were called "Positive Mental Octopus" and "psychedelic sex funk live". After a time Warner Bros. offered them a 10 million dollar contract, so they decided to leave EMI Records. At Warner they began to work in the "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" the 5th album of the band. It was recorded on a big haunted mansion of California where they were for a long time (till they finished the album). In the meantime they taped "Funky Monks" this video was directed by Gus Van Sant (who also directed Under the Bridge). It contains all the photo sessions, the recording of the album and a lot of cool stuff. Blood Sugar Sex Magik was produced by "Rick Rubin"and it was released in september 1991 ;the first single was "Give it away" (who doesn't love that song??). They also won a grammy for best hardrock (??) They inmediatly became highly famous after releasing this song .they appeared on the simpsons singing this song. After Give it away they released the Under the Bridge single it also won some awards. In the album there's also a song dedicated to Hillel Slovak called "My lovely man" (...Well I'm cryin', now my lovely man, Yes I'm cryin', Now and no one can, Ever fill the, The hole you left my man I'll see you later, My lovely man if I can...). Another songs in the album are "the greeting song, breaking the girl, suck my kiss, etc. The success was so huge that they got very tired of being touring. They complained all the time because they couldn't sleep and eat properly. John couldn't handle it so he quit in may 7th 1992 when they were in Japan (Frusciante sent a letter to Rubin telling him that he was going to leave the band and he was a fool for doing it). Then once again the band had to look for a new guitar player.
