The Savage story

Short savage facts
* The first song they wrote together was "A thousand words" which is included on their self titled debut album
* Rosie O’Donnell boosted their career in the US of A when she played ”I want you” to millions of viewers and declared it her favourite song, GO Rosie!!!
* Daniel writes the instrumental bits, the background music sort of and Darren writes the melody and the lyrics
* Apparently the pair have only had three fights during the time they’ve known eachother which is about 6 years (oh, really??? why would you count how many times you’ve faught?...j/k...lol)
* They don’t socialize privately because they think they’d get too much of eachother. However they are GREAT friends, they’re soulmates. ”Meeting Daniel was like coming home” Darren has said which I think is a wonderful thing to say about a friend. He’s also said ”We think very highly of eachother” and ”Daniel’s a very dear friend to me for many reasons that you might not understand”, WOW, that’s some friend, I am sorry that I probably will never meet anybody I’ll feel that close to
”Darren’s like a skateboard bowl” Daniel has said about Darren (a skateboard bowl is one of those places where people do tricks with their skateboards, you know, when they go up with the board and then slide down and up to the other side) ”You go up one side and then the next - it’s a really enjoyable ride, you’re like ‘Wooooo’” Daniel carried on. Now that’s a beautiful metaphor, it’s awfully cute
* They felt they had to release ”To the moon and back” just so that they could get away from the Roxette reputation
* Neither of them has ever been a fan of the Swedish duo Roxette but they both like one song of theirs (at least they said so on Swedish TV)
The story so far
The savage story began 5 years ago when Daniel Jones put an ad in the paper for a singer. Darren Hayes was the last one to answer but Daniel knew right away that this was his man. They clicked from the first time they met.
In the dawn of their career they played at different clubs and such and performed covers. But after a while they decided they should start writing their own material which later proved to be a smart move.
You can hear their musical influences are from 80s pop groups like Tears For Fears which Daniel was into and also some touch of mowtown music which Darren is guilty for. An impeccable mixture.
Savage Garden’s debut single was the smooth Roxette reminiscing ”I want you” which earned them success all over the world. Incase you wonder how it is that the chorus sounds so smooth and soothing it’s because they’ve recorded Darren’s voice 12 times and played them all at once so it’s like 12 people singing instead of one.
Their second single was ”To the moon and back”, a beautiful ballad which shows the strength of Darren’s voice. Darren who’s penned the lyrics says it’s about a friend and it’s about ”the struggle”, of not being able to trust anybody. This was also a big hit.
Their third and current (this was in spring 1998) charttopping single is ”Truly Madly Deeply”, a sweet sweet love song that some say Darren wrote for his wife Colby when he was away from her for 8 months when they recorded the album (aaaaawwww, isn’t that cute?), I haven’t heard him say it but it’s logical that he would write a lovesong for his wife. It’s such a good song!!!!!!! It’s reached the nr1 spot in both Oz-land and the USA and is climbing up the charts in Europe.
They have released two other singles in Australia which I don’t have much information about. All I know is that the two are ”Break me shake me” and ”Universe” in that order. The first is an angry song, starting mellow and moody and accelerating to a fountain of emotions and rage. The latter is a sexy slow lovesong that is great when you wanna sleep, you fall asleep with a smile on your face (I’ve tried it, I know).
They've also released "Break Me Shake Me" in some countries, "Tears of Pearls" in some, rereleased "To the Moon and Back" in the US and the UK plus "I Want You" in the UK.
Recently Savage Garden won 10 ARIAs (= Aussie grammys) in their native Austrailia and wiped the floor with all other acts...hehe!
Savage Garden is the only act who’s had a nr1 single and album at the same time in Austrailia when Truly Madly Deeply and Savage Garden both inhabitet the nr1 slot
Savage Garden the album was nr1 in Austrailia for 39 whopping weeks!!!!! can you believe that??? it was top 10 long after that aswell.
It’d be safe to say that things are looking good for Savage Garden and if you haven’t joined the Savage wave, do so =0)
Savage Garden have released a brand new single called "The Animal Song", a more profound song than other previous Savage Garden songs. The single has been doing well everywhere (eg. nr3 in Swedish single chart) and is the soundtrack for the movie "The Other Sister" starring Diane Keaton and Juliett Lewis and a new album rumoured to be sad and beautiful is due out in fall '99.
(Is the background beffitting or what?)
