Savage Garden interview transcript

This is a transcript from the interview Savage Garden gave on the 31st of March when they were on a show called ”Vastmannagatan 44 A” on Swedish cable channel ZTV, it’s a little bit like MTV but they have more non-musical shows. I have not altered or added a single word, any grammar mistakes? not my fault, that's how they said it. Please don't copy this without my permission, I worked so hard to listen and take down every word

Hosts of the show are 4 people who take turn to host every other day. That day Josefin and Johan were hosts.

*Savage Garden perform ”To the moon and back”* (I’m pretty sure it was playback, webmaster)

Johan: *in Swedish* Savage Garden is here!

Josefin: Yes, they are! Welcome! *she starts speaking English from ‘welcome’*

Darren: ‘tack’ (thank you in Swe)

*laughters all around*

Js: Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones

Daniel: That’s correct

Js: That’s correct

Js: What made you decided to work together when you first met years ago?

Dan: We actually met nearly seven years ago now and I guess we had a chemistry between us, we loved music and we loved creating music and people love music so we love music :0) and that’s why we started working together

Daz: We just dreamed really hard to get a...um...you know, we had very similiar dreams and it’s still exciting today, like this is our first record but it feels like we’ve been dreaming for years you know, to get to this point...so...*he nodds*

Js: So that must feel like, yeah, like a dream...hehehe

Daz: It is like a dream, I think we’re very lucky...um...any entertainer will tell you, we get paid to do the thing that we love to do, you know, we get flung around the world, we come to your beautiful country and you know...get treated really well and we, we, we’re very privileged and happy so...

*Johan translates the talking to Swedish for younger viewers*

Js: Many of your songs are about relationships and love

Daz: mhum

Js: Are they experienced by you?

Daz: It’s all a con

*laughters all around*

Daz: Yeah, um, everything we do is...um...from te heart. It, it it...um...I don’t think we could get up on stage every night if we didn’t feel it or have lived it or believe in it and that could be really difficult sometimes because at the moment our life is going really well so we need to find something to write about for the next record because it can’t all be just about *starts moving his head left and write* happiness, it’s um...

Js: But you can write a happy record, about happiness...

Daz: We can, absolutely. I just think sometimes it’s more interesting to talk about, you know, other emotions, even lovesongs I don’t think we talk just about, you know, ‘I love you, you love me, we’ll live happily’. It’s always about other emotions, the ones that are under the carpet. I think sometimes they’re more interesting.

Js: What do you think is the best way to keep a relationship strong and going?

*Darren points his hand towards Daniel*

Dan: Um...it’s pretty easy really, you...uh...I guess trust would be up the top of the list, um...honesty

Js: Yeah...

Dan: Um...and respect for eachother I think. You know, you have to...uh...you have to know yourself before you start to try to get to know somebody else and when you know that you’ve got those qualities of trust, respect and honesty it becomes quite easy, so that’s my secret.

Daz: I think you can’t look to somebody else to complete you. I think that you have to love yourself, I don’t think you can find happiness from any place except your own heart, I think that’s probably the biggest problem in most relationships, is that you look to somebody else to make you happy and I don’t think that’s possible.

*Johan translates* (the part that Daniel has said he says ‘and Darren thinks’ so he hasn’t done his homework! webmaster)

*screams from outside*
Js: Yeah, I get a little bit distracted but...hehehe (I think it was bad of her to give the Savage fans flack which she did by saying that but in a nice way. webmaster)

Js: What’s the best way to get a girlfriend happy if she’s pissed at you, you think?

*laughters all around*

Daz: Ohh, money, expensive gifts, flowers *by now Dan’s laughing big time* let’s face it, money buys everything...*lol*

Js: Yeah? chocolate? or what?

Daz: ...chocolate, I just think...go hard, diamonds, flowers, chocolate...

Js: Sure, diamonds...hehehehe...we all can afford that...hehehe

Daz: If you haven’t got the money...hahaha...if you haven’t got the money, just sell something. Sell your mother to buy something very expensive to give to the woman that you love because...hahaha...um...I don’t know, honesty...I think it goes back to that. If someone’s upset with you I think that you just have to be patient, you know, and no amount of money will solve that, ”Dr Love” *pointing to Dan* what’s your...*lol* opinion?

Dan: Uhm...I would say a sincere apology coz you have to not apologize to much because after a while it becomes irrelevant, you know, you can keep doing the same mistake *moving his hands around* and keep apologizing and after a while it’s gonna be worked in so...you know, apology

Js: Okay, I’m asking because you seem like very loving guys *at the same time as Josefin is talking Daniel’s talking about something and ends with ‘flowers’

Daz: *smiling* well, what are you doing later on...hehehe? (Darren is married as you may know and so is Josefin...hahaha, she’s married to a famous Swedish musician and modern day poet, webmaster)

*Daniel scratches the back of his neck which in body language most of the time indicates embarrassement or lack of interest*

*Johan translates*

Js: A girl called Meja, you know her?

Daz: weeell, I want to say YES...*big smile*

Js: She’s Swedish anyway...(She and Johan talk about Meja and show her video)

Jn: *in Swedish* We’re sitting here with Savage Garden, at least two of the members, Daniel and Darren. (obviously, he doesn’t know that D&D are the only members, webmaster)

Js: Yeah, and since you’re from Austrailia do you know what’s happened to John Fornham (I don’t know who he is so I don’t know if this is the right spelling, maybe she pronounced it inaccurately, webmaster)

Daz: Yeah, we were just saying, he just released a Greatest Hits album which means he’s getting old and he wants to retire. He was very popular in our country...um, he still is.

Dan: Yeah, he still is, pretty much so. His audience have become quite a bit older now and I guess...um...he can still play, you know, to 10000-20000 people where ever he goes in Austrailia, he’s still big, he’s just...

Daz: He’s the Austrailian Neil Diamond

Js: It feels good to know, I thought maybe he was dead or something

Daz: Nah :o), he’s just not doing anything contemporary

Js: *in Swedish to viewers and Johan* I don’t know if you remember but how did it go that one, you know, ”You’re the voice”

*Johan sings part of the song*

*Darren and Daniel laugh and Darren claps his hands*

Js: Is there anything that you Austrailians are known for? like, for example, we here in Sweden are known for having a little cold attitude

Daz: Do you think so?

Js: Yeah...No, I don’t think so but...

Daz: I don’t think so either, I think we’re similiar

Dan: Yeah, I think a lot people look at Austrailians perhaps a little loud, obnoxious, you know, beer drinking, yobbo-like. Yobbo is like a...a very loud and...um...what’s your...

Daz: A..a...a lush. A man who stays in the pub too long...

Dan: Yeah

Daz: ...and has a fat tummy and...

Dan: Beer drinking...

Daz:...and yells at women.

Js: So that’s what’s gonna happen to you when you get old?

Daz: Pretty much.

Js: Okay. Before Christmas Natalie Imbruglia was here and I mean all the guys at ZTV went like drooling monsters, they were totally crazy, I mean, are all girls in Austrailia that pretty and beautiful?

Daz: hmm...*jokingly* They don’t all match up to you but...um...I think we’re blessed with having some beautiful women in our country, everywhere is, you know. She’s good-looking, isn’t she? *looking at Dan*

Dan: I actually think - yeah, she is - I actually think...um...Sweden have a very good name for attractive females. We get a lot of Swedish bagpackers travelling through Austrailia and most of them are very beautiful, nice looking people so...

*Johan translates*

Js: I’m feeling so good now. (referring to Daz’s remark about nobody matching up to her)

Daz: Aw...hehehe...that’s good

Dan: I thought you were Norweigan not Swedish...hahaha (I think he meant something by that but I don’t really know what)

Js: Yeah, I’m half actually, my daddy is, it’s true

Daz: Rumour has it that Daniel once had a big crush on somebody from...um...was it Norway? but it’s over now, it’s gone

Js: Okay, it’s gone

Daz: You don’t look anything like her

Js: But you’re not over anyway, how do you see yourself in 10 years?

Daz: Balding...um...I don’t know, you know, I think we feel really lucky, this is our first record. We’re songwriters more than anything, you know...um...we’re looking forward to making a new record...um...I don’t know, still pushing the envelope for ourselves, you know, I think we’re far more interested in exciting ourselves musically than we are trying to please a public or sell records so hopefully still going

Js: Yeah, I hope it’s gonna be fine, I think it’s gonna be fine. Okay, so thank you very much for being here and hope you come back soon.

Dan and Daz: Thank you

Js and Jn: *first in English then in Swedish* We’re gonna see more of you. We’re gonna see more of Savage Garden later when they’re gonna perform their hit Truly Madly Deeply

*They perform a lovely version of Truly Madly Deeply*
