McCaffery Hill
(Danylo-Buric)
Singer-Danylo
When twilight falls in Avenshaw just as it's done before
The men and the boys escape their work inside the tavern doors
We drink our ale and we tell or tales and they all still cause a chill
And they say that the devil himself resides on top of McCaffery Hill
This all began one autumn day 'fore most of you were born
Two boys they were out traveling round early in the morn
But the lightning struck and the wild winds blew and the rains came pouring down
And the boys last seen on McCaffery Hill have never since been found
In town there was commotion and it caused a lot of noise
And the men sent up a search party to bring back the two lost boys
Oh, the gossip and the tales, they flew around the rumor mill
And they said that the devil himself resides on top of McCaffery Hill
The men went up to McCaffery Hill and they were all amazed
They found two sets of footprints that lead into a firey cave
They all went in investigating inside the red and black
Some 40 men went in that day, not a single one came back
(solo)
It's been a good some 50 years since the devil claimed his dead
But the sky above McCaffery Hill still burns a firey red
And the folks still say that late at night when there's no other sound
They can hear the devil's hoofprints tredding on the ground
Well, it's getting late and I have to go back to my work and strife
At home my work still waits for me and likewise waits my wife
Well you know I love that woman and I probably always will
But I wouldn't be surprised if it's her herself who lives up on McCaffery Hill
