"Please don't tell me he's...he..." she trailed off not wanting to say
what she thought let alone think it.
"Right now we can't tell if he'll make it. He's in the ICU, we have our
best staff working to try to find the problem, but now we're stumped. We
don't see anything wrong with him," the doctor explained.
Annie stood up and leaned over his desk, "Well, you find out what's wrong
with him! Is it money you want? I've got plenty of it, if it is! I don't care
if you have to work around the clock, you're going to find out what's wrong
with my son," she said barely above a whisper then walked out of the room.
A.J. sat there stunned at her little outburst, just a minute ago she
couldn't out two words without crying.
"What's the chance he makes it?" A.J. finally asked.
The doctor looked at him forlornly, "Truthfully, we don't think he'll
make it through the night."
A.J. nodded and walked out into the waiting room to find Brian back and
consoling Annie. He sat down quietly to collect his thoughts. What was wrong
with Anthony? Why couldn't they figure it out? Was he going to make it
despite the doctors predictions?
Brian looked through the glass window at all the babies, then his eyes fell upon Anthony. He was hooked up to only God knows how many machines and tubes were all around him. Brian left A.J. with Annie and told them he was just going to the bathroom, he didn't want Annie to see him. If she actually saw Anthony she might have a nervous break down. ' He's so tiny. Why did this have to happen to him? What kind of God would do this to such a tiny baby? This isn't right, I wish it was me in this hospital instead of him,' he thought. It crushed him to see his son like that, when he couldn't take it anymore, he turned away and walked down the hall. He shoved his hands in his pockets and looked down, he didn't want anybody to see he was crying.

A nurse walked up to Annie and was about to wake her up when A.J. stopped
her.
"She's been crying all night and she finally fell asleep, do not wake
this woman up," he said.
"I'm sorry, I just wanted to tell her that Anthony is stable now. You
can't see him exactly, but the ICU for babies has a glass window you can look
through," she explained.
"I'll be sure to tell her, thank you," he said then sat next to Annie.
' There's no way I'm letting her go see Anthony, she'll probably die if
she saw what he looked like now,' he decided. When he looked up he saw Brian
strolling down the hall, A.J. knew he didn't go to the bathroom.
"Hey, Bri, you wanna take her home? It's pretty late, I think it's around
one a.m." A.J. whispered.
"Nah, she'll probably just come right back, we might as well stay until
we find out Anthony's --" Brian was cut off by an announcement being made
over the loud speaker.
"Code blue in ICU, Code Blue in ICU. Could all doctors on call please
report to the ICU immediately!"
Brian looked at A.J. who had the same worried look on his face, "You
think it's...."
"What if it...."
"Are you thinking the same thing I'm thinking?" Brian asked.
"Yeah, let's go," A.J. got up.
"What about Annie?"
"She's out like a light, I don't think she'll wake up, besides we'll only
be gone a few minutes. We're only going to see if he's ok," A.J. reasoned.
"Ok, let's go," Brian said and the two disappeared up the corridor and
raced up to the ICU.
When they got there they stopped in their tracks, "He's gone!" Brian
cried seeing the empty space where Anthony had been.
Annie's eyes fluttered open and she stretched from her uncomfortable
position on the chair.
"Brian?" she asked looking around. "That's strange where are they?" she
asked herself, then sat back down in her chair. She was feeling a little
better, she had a feeling Anthony was going to be Ok. She was deciding on
whether or not to go get a soda when a nurse walked up to her.
"Excuse me, Ms. Millano?" she asked.
Annie looked up, "Hmmm? What? Is Anthony Ok?"
The lady walked over and sat next to her, she put her hand over Annie's
and looked at her sympathetically.
"Why are you doing that? What's wrong?" she asked frantically.
' I hate this part of my job,' she thought and took a deep breath. "Ms.
Millano, we --"
Annie jumped up, "No you didn't! You didn't lose him, did you?" she
softened her tone.
An awkward silence passed between the two and the nurse slowly nodded her
head, "I'm sorry."
Annie felt her whole body go numb. She couldn't breathe, she couldn't
think, she couldn't cry, she couldn't do anything. She just stood there with
her mouth open. She felt a pair of arms wrap around her from behind, she
thought. She guessed it was Brian. She made no attempt to hug back, she was
dead to the world.
~a few days later~
"So why did you want us all here?" Nick asked, sitting across from Brian
in the living room.
"Well, it's Annie. I'm worried about her, I knew she would take this
hard, but I had no idea she would act like this," Brian said playing with the
hem of his shirt.
"What?"
"She hasn't come out of the bedroom since we got back home that night.
She hasn't even talked to me, maybe a few words here and there when needed,
but other than that, nothing."
"Man, she is taking this bad," A.J. sighed.
"I thought maybe if she saw you guys, you could cheer her up or
something. I'm sure not doing any good. I'm going to try to get her to come
out, I'll be right back," Brian said getting up and going upstairs returning
a few minutes with a far away looking Annie.
Nick walked up to her first, "Hi Ann, how's it going?" he asked.
She just looked at him, almost like she was trying to read his thoughts,
then walked away and sat on the couch.
"Annie, honey, please talk to them. They just want to help you," Brian
pleaded with her, but got no response.
He looked at Kevin for help.
"Annie, this isn't good for you. We're all sad about, um, that, but we
have to move on. Acting this way isn't going to bring him back," he hugged
her and whispered in her ear, "it's going to be okay."
Annie felt her blood boil when he said that. ' How can be Ok? how can he
say that?' she asked herself. She pushed Kevin back and everybody looked at
her waiting to see what she was going to do next.
"Why does everybody keep saying it's going to be Ok? How can it be
fucking Ok? Can you tell me that Kevin?" she screamed at him.
"Ann, calm down," Brian started towards her.
"Don't you tell me to calm down! Our son died, how can you be so happy
about everything!"
"Brian, let her, she needs to it out," Kevin said.
"Would you just shut up! You don't know what I'm going through, nobody
does! How can they possibly? I lost him and it's my fault! I did it! I killed
my son!" she yelled, her tears falling steady.
Kevin made an attempt to hug her and she fought back, beating on his
chest.
"Don't touch me! Stay away from me! I don't want your sympathy, I don't
even deserve it! Just..stay...away!" she yelled, finally giving in. She fell
to the floor and Kevin fell with her still holding on to her as she cried
into his chest.
