CMST started in 1978, although it wasn't called CMST at the time. Over the years CMST has grown and moved to the wonderful UMES campus. In 1992, however, CMST ceased to exist, GASP!, because of a lack of funding. Also, in 2000 CMST lacked funding for a middle school session, but that is ok, because it is back! So now that you know the (very) basic history, the question is, what is CMST? CMST is a place where students interested in math and sciences come together for two weeks to share an amazing experience. CMST is all about learning how math and science are used in the real world and making friends to last you a lifetime.
The leadership positions have been changing up quite a bit. This year Uncle J is the director and Moose has switched titles again and is now assistant director. Then there are the counselors and head counselors who make things go (fairly) smoothly. And don't forget the teachers. A lot of the teachers come from NSA. And last but not least there are the sponsers, NSA and NASA help fund the camp and UMES provides CMST with it's home. (And I'm hoping that soon I can be part of this side of things!!)
You've finally made it! Now it's time for the best part of all, the people! The connection I have to the people there is so amazing that it can barely be described! It's hard to say what causes this connection, the fact that we're all math geeks (jk), that we're stuck in a place with HORRIBLE food for two weeks together, maybe just that we're stuck together for two weeks, I'm really not sure, but everyone just seems to click! The main chance you have to hang out with these people is the weekend. Normally there are two dances (this year both of the dances were at Murphy! ick!). There's also the baseball game, which no one actually watches (well there was a BIG fight this year.... so we did watch that). And you can't forget Shad Landing with a picnic lunch. Sunday is pretty much free time, you can socialize, do laundry, sleep, it really doesn't matter. And this whole time you're with your AWESOME friends that you've made from CMST. But remember.... NO PDA!!!!
