Also speaking at the event are Nobel Prize WinnerJose Ramos Horta, Lodi Gyari (Special Envoy to the H.H. Dalai Lama),and representatives of both Amnesty International and Students for a Free Tibet. A march to the Chinese Mission to the U.N. will follow, then another rally from 2-4 P.M., and finally, the group will engage in a lie in as an act of non violent civil disobedience. Protesters are expected to lie in the street, stopping traffic in front of the Mission to send a message to both the U.S. and Chinese governments. Organizers have been informed that this action is illegal and, if attempted, protesters in the street will be arrested. The rally will take place during New York City's Tibet Awareness Week March 3-10. Monday's event is significant because the date coincides with Tibetan Uprising Day, which commemorates the 1959 uprising in Lhasa, Tibet following the invasion by the Chinese military. ... courtesy of - Christina Johnson 9th March 1997 Please join in the rally if you live near by! |
