Skepticism (FIN)- Stormcrowfleet CD

(Red Stream Records 1995)

A band has to be making a statement when they play this slow. For Skepticism, they want to make you picture a leviathan exorcised of spirit or any care for the mortal world, lumbering through the deep dark waters of the netherworld at its sloth drudgery, letting off a hardly coherent but excruciatingly tormenting moan (yawn) that echoes through the endless depths like the heaviest resignation. That is how I tried to fathom their sound, a monumental sloth of doom death metal unheard since dISEMBOWELMENT (although even more lethargic), truly bottom heavy and darkly languid. They are minimalists, but envisioned grand splendor of the ziggurats of depression, and got the mood totally immersed into the "organic" sound to bring themselves one step closer to brooding mother nature, tracks like "The Everdarkgreen" no mere coincidence. This is a disc that requires some attention from the listener to breath and understand its essence, since it is the least that can excite; indeed it can pass by you uneventfully if you're in the mood for moshing. It may be a along, arduous and stormy journey, but towards the end the dividends are well paid for your attention. "Stormcrowfleet" has made me travelled to the bleak, sparse landscapes of doom and I believe that it may offer a possible portal to transcend to a higher state of existence. This exemplifies the essence of doom, when under the right medications, will open your eyes to darkness, instead of that other "doom" which opens your eyes to confusing psychedelic colours. "Sign Of A Storm" and "The Gallant Crow" are perfect examples of doom death metal that these Finnish merchants of exit create and I bet a substance junkie will give a healthy sign of approval. I like the CD alot but the guys are even capable of better things. I hope this will bring a fresh respite to those who are captives of the so called "gothic" yoke.
