There's really not a lot to tell about my (probable) conversation with Anita Pallenberg.

One summer day in 1979 when I was 16, on school vacation and bored, I called directory assistance for Westchester County to see if there were any listings for a Keith Richards. (You know the silly things teenagers do.) They gave me a listing for a number in Scarsdale. I thought, "Yeah right, this probably isn't even him, just someone with the same name." I dialed the number anyway, and a woman with a German accent answered the phone. I had seen Barbarella on TV just the week before and I was sure it was Anita's voice on the other end of the line.

Since I hadn't planned anything to say if I did reach Keith or any of his entourage, I pretended I was taking a survey. There was a lot of talk about Quebec separating at the time (some things never change) and I said I was trying to get opinions from Americans on the issue. She said, "All right." So I asked her if she thought it would change her life at all if Quebec separated from Canada.

Then it seemed like she changed her mind about being in the "survey" because she said, "I'm sorry, I can't talk to you right now. I have guests inside." So I said thank you for your time, hung up, and collapsed into giggles with my sister who was listening on the extension.

It was only a couple of weeks later that she was involved in the suicide of a teenage boy who shot himself on her bed. Family members said he had been at her place constantly in the previous weeks. There were also allegations of satanic rituals and witches' covens. It made a chill run up my spine because I realized that if it was indeed Anita I had spoken to, the guests she was referring to could have included this young man or maybe her alleged "satanic" friends.

Or then again, maybe it just happened to be a different Keith Richards with a German wife.
