He was lined up to play a 'secret' X-pensive winos gig at the Marquee Club in London - small place only holds about 300. Tickets were only available on the day and one per person. It was a cold day and we queued from the morning - by the evening myself and a friend got in - cold and pissed off but excited about being so close to our hero. Drank a few beers and waited for him to come on - got quite near the front - bit of a crush. Band came on - good sound band real tight. Then Keef began to sing but we couldn't hear him hardly - the mike was turned right down. My friend then proceeded to try and attract his attention by waving his arms and pointing to his ears - I don't think Keef noticed and carried on singing somewhat inaudibly - more attention seeking from my friend - more pointing to ears - still ignored.
At this point my friend then decided he definitely had to have Keef's attention. It is not for no reason that in these places they give you beer in plastic containers rather than glasses because he proceeded to launch this plastic at Keef - not in a gesture of anger you understand but to attract his attention to the fact that we could hardly hear the vocals. Anyway Keef saw this coming a mile off and swerved a little and it missed his head. Keef still didn't see from where the missile came and was totally unfased by it. However, Bobby Keys the Sax player got a good view of my friend and while trying to play sax was also gesturing that he could see who threw the beer plastic and his expression was not one of sympathy and understanding of our plight. We thought that given the rather large security guys and the fact that we had been spotted a lower profile was probably wise.
Then we realised - his singing was so awful they deliberately kept the mike turned down.
