SS: TELL ME ABOUT THE BAND ORIGIN ETC.
THE REDS: Our first show was with the Go-Devils and they’re from Japan. Room 41 also. Room 41 and the Go Devils and we formed a couple of weeks before that show because we wanted to play it. And that was at a house show in Denton, Texas in October of ‘97.
SS: WERE YOU GUYS IN OTHER BANDS BEFORE THAT?
THE REDS: We played in a band called the Odd Fellows for a few years before that and we were an instrumental band. We put out a 7 inch and no one bought it or liked it.
SS: DON'T YOU GUYS HAVE A 7 INCH COMING OUT SOON?
THE REDS: Yeah we have a split with this band called The Boozers coming out. They were the first band to play tonight. Lindsey Coon is going to do the artwork for it and it’s on Turkey Baster Records in Austin and it should be out in the next month or so. We’ve recorded material for our own EP but we’ll probably go back and re-record it. We weren’t too happy with the way it came out. We’re going to go back and record with Tim from The Mullens because he did a real good job.
SS: ARE YOU GUYS TOURING ANYTIME SOON?
THE REDS: We hope to. We’d like to do some in August but it’s probably too late to set anything up. I’m in school plus the rest of us have full time jobs. I have another year of college so maybe next summer we'll tour. Right now our biggest goal is to get somebody to put out a record for us so we can go on tour, but we don’t have the funds to do it yet. We can press the 7 inch but we can’t press an LP.
SS: WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK OF THE DENTON SCENE?
THE REDS: There’s a lot of good bands, there’s a lot of bad bands. We’ve been in it together for about 5 years and there’s a lot of good bands and a lot of cool people but it just seems like nobody wants to get out of Denton. For some reason, everybody just plays there. Playing in Denton all the time just kind of sucks. We wanted play in other places. Like we do really well in Austin and Dallas now.
SS: IS THERE A BIG HARDCORE/EMO TREND UP THERE?
THE REDS: Not at all. Emo’s popular but there aren’t really any emo bands. But when the touring acts come, the kids turn out. There’s E-Class, they’re sort of emo. It’s not really popular with the kids in town. The big shows seem to bring the kids from other areas that travel to see the emo bands.
SS: WHAT ABOUT HARDCORE? IS IT BIG OUT THERE WITH LIKE CREWS AND THE FASHION?
THE REDS: No, not really. As far as we know, maybe it is happening and we just don’t know it! We lead very insular lives.
SS: SO DID YOU GUYS MAKE YOUR COMMUNIST GEAR?
THE REDS: I made them. I just used T-Shirt paint and made them. I make pretty much everything by myself, like the T-Shirts we’re selling and stuff like that. It’s cheaper that way.
Guitar Wolf's tour van drives by and someone yells out, "Hey you commie faggots!"
THE REDS: That was Guitar Wolf calling us commie faggots.
THE REDS: I don’t think it was anyone from Guitar Wolf. It was the drummer from the Reclusives.
SS: WHAT SORT OF MUSIC ARE YOU GUYS INTO?
THE REDS: Rock and roll. AC/DC, Motorhead (laughs), The Monks, The Pack, The Ripoffs, a lot of the early Austin bands that aren’t around anymore like the Cryin’ Out Louds, The Inhalants.
SS: WHAT ABOUT THE 1-4-5'S?
THE REDS: Um, I never really heard them on record but I saw them before the 5-6-7-8’s last year and it wasn’t my cup of tea I guess. But I haven’t heard them on record. They seemed like nice guys though.
SS: WHAT DO YOU GUYS DO BESIDES THE REDS?
THE REDS: I work a job I hate, I go to school so I can graduate next year and after that I’m moving to Japan.
THE REDS: I just work 40 hours a week.SS: WHAT DID YOU GUYS THINK OF THE GUITAR WOLF SHOW TONIGHT?
THE REDS: Oh it was excellent! All the bands played well. I had a good time. I wish The Boozers had gotten a better slot. They always put on a good show and people seem to like them but you know, the Orbit Room closed down and that was their place to play.
SS: WHAT ARE THE FUTURE PLANS FOR THE BAND?
THE REDS: We’d like to get some material out. We’d like to play shows in places that we’ve never been and with bands that we like that we’ve never seen before. I just want to work really hard at getting more songs, we need to write more songs. It’s getting old. We’ve been playing these for awhile right now.
SS: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF SPINAL TAP?
THE REDS: The best comedy ever. We watched it last week. Fine fine fine work of cinema. It’s too real! They played it at the Inwood with Waiting for Guffman. Michael what’s his name’s other movie which had just come out recently. Which was really good. I had never seen it before.
