Silver Scooter is a indie-pop band from Austin, Texas. They've released two full length records and countless seven inches. Their latest release, Orleans Parish was recently released on Peek A Boo Records. This interview is with Scott Garred and it was done over email in April 1999. The pictures were taken at their show at the New Brookland Tavern in Columbia, SC in 1999.
SS: HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH SILVER SCOOTER AS A BAND NAME?
SCOTT: Tom and I used to be in several bands together in Idaho and Wash St. One band was called Crogan in which there was a song called "silver scooter." When it came time to have our band in Austin, we decided it would make an O.K name.
SS: DID YOUR TOUR GO WELL? WHERE WERE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY?
SCOTT: This last tour to the East went very well. Some of our favorite places to play have been Columbus, OH with our friends Tiara, and NYC. We had fantastic shows in those 2 cities.
SS: GIVE YOUR NEW ALBUM A PLUG FOR THE LOSERS THAT DON'T HAVE IT.
SCOTT: "Orleans Parish" is a bit more challenging as compared to "the other palm springs." I think people will find that it grows on them and will last a lot longer on the turntable than the first album. As far as a plug for the losers out there? Hmm. There's something on here for everyone! In the words of East River Pipe: "Bring on the loser."
SS: WAS THERE ANY PARTICULAR REASON WHY THE NEW ALBUM WAS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT THAN YOUR FIRST ONE?
SCOTT: Silver Scooter did not set out to write a record. Our records are the songs that we've written and feel the strongest about at that time. And, I guess I should say that I can't seem to shake the clean guitar sound these days. I'm glad it's different than the first. I don't want to re-write "pumpkin eyes."
SS: WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK OF THE AUSTIN SCENE, DO YOU THINK IT'S OVERRATED?
SCOTT: Everything is overrated. The Austin music scene is getting better. When I moved here in 1995 I thought Austin had a bubble over it's head and felt there was no music other than local music. A lot of that is just my first impression sticking with me which is certainly not that fair. I like Austin's music scene. It's incredibly diverse. One thing I really like about it is some of the country, bluegrass, and rockabilly specialty shows on the radio.
SS: WHAT WAS THE LAST SHOW YOU WENT TO, DID YOU LIKE IT?
SCOTT: The last show I went to aside from one we played was the Sleeter Kinney and Versus show. I really like Versus but did not like them that night. The venue was crowded and the sound was bad. I didn't stay for much of the Sleeter Kinney show only because I grew tired. They sounded great considering the poor sound.
SS: WHAT WAS THE LAST RECORD YOU BOUGHT? AND WHY DID YOU WANT TO BUY THAT RECORD SPECIFICALLY?
SCOTT: The last record I bought was Styx "Pieces of Eight." I used to listen to them a lot when I was younger and I just happened to find it used.
SS: WHAT REASONS WOULD YOU GIVE A PERSON WHO HAS NEVER HEARD OF YOUR BAND TO BUY YOUR STUFF OR GO TO YOUR SHOWS?
SCOTT: That's a tough question. I've never really felt comfortable recommending going to see us.
SS: WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR?
SCOTT: One more tour probably East again for CMJ in September. Maybe add a fourth member (another friend of ours from old Idaho and Wash St. bands Tom and I were in). Start writing songs for a new record. Which is probably a long ways off. I have a Super xx Man Cd coming out before the end of the year so i'll be doing some stuff with that.
SS: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF SPINAL TAP?
SCOTT: I love them. That movie was great and will always be a source for laughs. Certainly not rented as much as Star Wars, but.... whatever.
