Psychological Analysis

The following psychological study is a " blind " analysis which cannot take into consideration factors proper to ANGELICA's social background or education. Nevertheless, it describes the basic structure and dynamic of her psyche as the result of an interplay of various influences; that is, without confining it to certain categories or arbitrarily putting a label on it. Certain contradictions may appear, but they are an integral part of the paradoxes and ambivalence of her nature. It is impossible for us to predict which tendency will win out: that will depend on ANGELICA's decision.

As the second light of the solar system, the Moon has always been associated with the Sun in the minds of men. The Moon and Sun are the primordial cosmic couple. This satellite of the Earth, which mysteriously waxes and wanes, has been compared to the Eternal Feminine principle, the mother hovering over her infant's cradle. Psychologically, the Moon is thus symbolic of the Mother and the Mother Image. This figure is a primordial element in the psyche of each individual. Depending on her nature, the mother figure may correspond to her biological mother, a grandmother, or a woman who cared for her in infancy and childhood. When a person reaches adulthood, this mother-figure and all the emotions and bonds associated with her may be transferred to something else: a husband, a companion, an institution, a church, corporation, or political movement, a cult, etc. In short, any individual or structure likely to take on the mother's duty of caring for and nurturing the vulnerable aspects of an individual. To be more down-to-earth, the Mother-Figure corresponds to the habits which were learned and then definitively incorporated into the individual's identity as she gradually became acculturated and progressed towards social independence. As a result, a strongly " lunar " personality often finds it difficult to adapt, and is uncomfortable outside the secure setting of familiar routines. Closely tied to her past, ANGELICA may be unwilling to detach herself from it and embark on her life as an individual in the here-and-now. She still identifies somewhat with her inner child, and may display a child's capricious and unstable behavior, indulging in moodiness and indecision. Her passivity may make her easily influenced, her sensitivity makes her subjective, and she hesitates to open up and lay her soul bare. In her daily life, psychic activity will rule : her imagination, memory, sensitivity, sensation, and sentiment nearly overwhelm her psyche.

Saturn is the second dominant in ANGELICA's astral chart. In the following paragraph, we shall indicate the significance of this fact:

As one of the planets historically thought to be on the outer limits of the solar system (until the " modern " planets were discovered), Saturn has always been associated with the Moon, itself a peripheral heavenly body because it belongs to Earth and not to the solar system. Therefore, both Saturn and the Moon are aspects of a protection principle (the Moon encompasses the Earth in the same way as Saturn and its rings encompasses the solar system). Like the Moon, Saturn rules a security/insecurity dialectic, but where the Moon's concerns the private, intimate aspects of the individual, Saturn influences social and collective security. Saturn can be thought of as the polar opposite of the Moon (the archetype of the mother, but also of the child, and therefore related to orality). The god Saturn ate her children in order to reign, and thus represents the archetype of the mother (motherhood), the grandmother, and the sage (wisdom). The domination of Saturn thus indicates a maternal complex or, at least, an issue related either to the biological mother or to the symbolism of motherhood. This influence may result in a problem of identity and difficulties in aging which will make themselves evident in personal crises at every passage of this planet, every seven years - thus at the age of 7, at 14 or 15, and 21, 28, etc. Depending on the psychological context in which the individual is developing, the Saturnian may overcome or overcompensate her identity complex and gradually acquire a strongly structured personality, or, conversely, remain in a state of immaturity which would probably be detrimental to her destiny.

Mercury is the third dominant in ANGELICA's astral chart. In the following paragraph, we shall indicate the significance of this fact:

According to Greek myth, Mercury (or hermes, whose name derives etymologically from the piles of rocks which marked trails and guided travelers) was the messenger of the gods. She carried orders from Olympus to the mortals on Earth. The child of the illegitimate union of Zeus with Maia, Mercury was born " unknown to the immortal gods " and had to win her place among them by trickery, cleverness, and cunning. This is why she became the vagabond deity of travelers and wanderers. She is the instinctive foe of the settled, who see her as an outcast roaming on the outskirts of society: a pariah, a thief, and a swindler. As mater of the sign of Gemini, the Twins, she symbolizes the brother - the alter-ego who teaches us as much as we teach her, and is associated with adolescence, a period of intense intellectual discovery. Mercury thus symbolizes lively, sparkling wit, mobility in any form, mental exchange and interaction. As a result, a person strongly ruled by Mercury is quite likely to be clever and skillful. If Mercury is " afflicted ", her intellectual velocity may sometimes become mere mental hyperactivity. In any case, her skills are a great resource in the social realm. She communicates easily and effectively, orally or in writing. Her ability to unite and transmit would be a good resource in diplomatic or commercial endeavors.

The Fourth House is an area of the sky which is especially important in ANGELICA's theme, because it contains several planets, including the one which rules her Rising Sign. In the following paragraph, we shall explain the general meaning of this fact.

Traditionally, this house is associated with the home, family, inheritance, cultural heritage, traditions, the dwelling, the native land, etc. The South Node, one boundary of the Fourth House, corresponds to the vertical line connecting the Zenith to the Nadir. The polar opposite of the North Node, the highest point on the map of the sky, the South Node is the lowest and, as a result, symbolizes the individual's past; her foundation, sources, and inner self. Within the inner self, in the intimacy of the memory and the unconscious, the individual's family and ancestral past dwell concealed, mingled with the roots of her future development. Psychoanalytic theory demonstrates that an individual's future is determined by early childhood experiences. Astrology does not contradict this assumption, when it points to the Fourth House as the basis of any social or spiritual growth. The fact that this area is significant in ANGELICA's chart means that she is seeking her personal center. She sometimes experiences a feeling of insecurity which inspires her to establish a stable foundation for her life. As a result, she may be reluctant to leave behind the psychic and material pattern she inherited from her biological family and lineage. Certain important crises in her life may be related to this emergence, this construction of a new home in the here-and-now. If she is able to perceive the hidden bond between her reluctance to assert herself as an individual and her roots in her family's past, she will be able to attain true stability.

Synthesis and Advice

Many people mistakenly believe that astrology is too deterministic. However, as even the ancients said, " The stars incline but do not determine. " In fact, the astral chart is evidence that each of us is accountable only to himself for his life and his destiny. Neither heaven nor the occasional shell of human contacts can be held responsible for the situation down here on Earth. Astrology shows us that life is what we make of it: all we really obtain is what we decide to accomplish ourselves, of our own volition.

If ANGELICA really wants to improve and transform herself, the first step is to become aware of the weaknesses which may be holding her back and preventing her evolution:
- her lack of self-confidence
- her perfectionism
- her inability to see the whole picture
- her over intellectualization
- her fear of her emotions

ANGELICA has a pretty gloomy opinion of herself. Until she frees herself from this state of mind, nothing in her life will bring her full satisfaction. To initiate a change in her negative self-image, to trust herself better and gain self-assurance, the first thing she must do is learn to say NO. Once she is capable of saying NO to others, she can say YES to life. She must develop her awareness of all the things she loves and feels positive about, as well as all the changes she hopes to make in order to enjoy life more. This is the foundation that will support her, the inexhaustible source and center of the transformation of her personality. Infantile anxieties which arose in childhood when she was helpless may be obstacles to ANGELICA's evolution. Sometimes they actually prevent her from daring to confront challenges she would be altogether capable of assuming now! One of the reasons she yields to these childhood fears so readily is that they procure a feeling so familiar to her that, although it is negative, it is a reassuring part of her identity. However, the more often she reinforces this complex by yielding to that feeling, the more unaware she becomes of her true emotional state. It is difficult for her to believe in the sunny side of life because of the pernicious little voice inside her reminding her she really doesn't deserve all this goodness. This side of her undermines her vitality and forces her to compensate or flee from reality. In doing so, she limits her power to bring about a positive change in herself or her life. It's a vicious cycle, and to free herself, the first step for her is to free herself from the fears which prevent her from taking full advantage of life. She can succeed if she arranges a relaxed, positive environment for herself, establishes sincere relations with one or two special people, and, if possible, finds a setting - perhaps a yoga class - in which she can practice relaxation exercises.

For ANGELICA, the main goal to aim for, in order to give purpose and meaning to her life, will be to reach out from herself to other people, while striving to see them the way they are instead of relying on her subjective vision of them or her intuition. To succeed in this endeavor, she must resist the temptations of pride and projection (seeing the other through herself). She must learn to cooperate, because honest teamwork with her friends and relations will be the source of her true strength.
