Duran
Duran
Now Duran Duran has to be the epitome of an 80's band. They are the 80's in my opinion. Yeah sure they are still around and making modern music but they will always be the "Princes of New Wave". Think about it, aside from the Beatles, can you remember a band making as big of a splash on the music charts as well as a band that made girls just freak out like these guys did. I can honestly say, with not too much embarrassment, that I too was a Duranie at one time. Now I didn't have the fedora, the white cotton blazer or the tap shoes but I still considered myself a real fan.
Anyway, enough about me. Duran Duran started out in the early 80's with original members Simon LeBonn, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, and Andy Taylor. The band has since shrunk with the loss of Andy and Roger, but we don't need to talk about that crappy new Duran Duran. The real Duran Duran had four true albums; 1. Duran Duran 2. Rio 3. Seven and the Ragged Tiger 4. Arena...There was also Notorious but Andy and Roger had left by that point so I don't count that one. With hits like "Hungry Like the Wolf", "Rio", "The Reflex", and "Wild Boys" they became a very common band on MTV. In fact I believe that if it wasn't for MTV, Duran Duran would have never made it as big as they did. The real Duran Duran played their last concert at Live Aid but they did manage to still do a little bit of studio work before they disbanded. Andy Taylor left on not so good of terms and tried a solo career as a guitar wielding rocker boasting the fact that no synthesizers were used in making his solo album. He failed miserably.
Roger Taylor teamed up with John Taylor and Robert Palmer and created Power Station, while Simon and Nick started up Arcadia. Neither of their new bands did anywhere near as well as Duran Duran and eventually they both collapsed. John joined back up with Simon and Nick and some other people and reformed "Duran Duran" (I used quotation marks because like I said before I still don't view them as Duran Duran). Andy is now a studio musician and Roger lives on a farm in Italy with his family. Roger recently played drums on two songs off "Duran Duran's" latest album or so I read on another webpage. All in all, I'd have to say that the real Duran Duran is probably my favorite "New Wave" band of the 80's.
