Nuovo album!

Il nuovo album dei Simple Minds si chiamerà Cry e uscirà su etichetta Eagle Records il primo aprile. Ci saranno due edizioni (EAGLE EAGCD 196 e EAGLE EAGLT 196). L'album sarà preceduto dal singolo omonimo che uscirà il 18 marzo in un cofanetto composto da 2 cd (EAGLE EAGXS218 e EAGLE EAGXA218). Questa è la trascrizione del commento che Jim ha fatto su ognuno dei brani inclusi nel disco, apparso sul sito ufficiale: Cry - "Crafted pop with an emotional overload - a song sung as an intimate conversation." Intervista a Jim

Jim è stato intervistato da Mark Goodier ieri sera su BBC Radio Two. L'intervista è durata circa 15 minuti e sono stati trasnessi Neon Lights e The Man Who Sold The World. Jim ha confermato che la (nuova) data di uscita del disco è l'8 ottobre, mentre quella del singolo rimane il 10 settembre. Il nuovo album di pezzi nuovi è ultimato, mentre non ha detto nulla a proposito della compilation della Virgin e di OSATS. Jim ha inoltre rivelato che le date del prossimo tour mondiale, che partirà in primavera, verranno annunciate presto. Il tour toccherà Europa, Nord America e Sud America! Questo è il probabile titolo della nuova raccolta di pezzi dei Simple Minds che la Virgin farà uscire il prossimo 5 novembre, in occasione del venticinquesimo anno di atttività della band. Sarà un doppio cd e sembra che non saranno presenti nuovi pezzi.

Si riparla dei Simple...

Il glorioso Rolling Stones ha dedicato un articolo a Jim e soci relativamente a Neon Lights. Simple Minds, best known for Eighties hits Don't You Forget About Me and Alive and Kicking, will release Neon Lights, an album of cover songs, on September 24th. The group's first recording for Eagle Records -- also home to former major-label rock stars like Robert Palmer and John Mayall -- will consist of interpretations of classics by Van Morrison, Patti Smith, The Doors and The Velvet Underground, among others. [...] imple Minds are currently working on an album of new material that they hope to release early next year, with a worldwide tour to follow. The band's last studio album, Our Secrets Are the Same, remains unreleased. Completed in 1999, the recording is at the center of a legal battle with EMI, the band's former record company. Informazioni sulle prossime uscite

Il cd singolo in uscita il prossimo 10 settembre è un'edizione limitata. E' prevista la distribuzione in tutto il mondo, così come per l'album, ma è conveniente prenotare il disco, il cui numero di catalogo dovrebbe essere: Dancing Barefoot - Eagle EAGEP 198. La B-side sarà Gloria di Van Morrison, già eseguita dal vivo in Italia al Night Express di tre anni fa. Il codice dell'album invece dovrebbe essere: Neon Lights - Eagle EAGCD 194. Simple Minds Neon Lights "It certainly wasn't easy when we looked at the prospect of doing a cover version album. There have been so many great songs, so many different sounds, so many artists and acts that have influenced our band. We tried to hone it down to the key acts involved, and you could say that Simple Minds came out on a basis of listening to David Bowie, Roxy Music, Peter Gabriel and of course, Lou Reed. On top of that there was always Patti Smith, The Doors and Neil Young as well. In this collection we have tried to stay faithful to the sentiment of the original songs, but of course we have tried to bring our own heart to the songs. It is never easy to do cover versions. In some ways you are on to a hiding to nothing because the very fact that you're choosing these songs means that you believe that the originals are great in themselves. Grosse novità!

L'articolo seguente è tratto dal quotidiano britannico Daily Record del 13 luglio: Kerr's cover version opens new Doors MEETING OF MINDS "SIMPLE MINDS rocker Jim Kerr is to pay homage to Lizard King Jim Morrison on his band's comeback album. The Scots rocker and bandmate Charlie Burchill have a collection of cover versions lined up under their new two-album deal with Eagle Records. And one of the highlight tracks is a reworking of the Doors' classic Hello, I Love You. Jim, 42, said: "We are excited about the new phase and we're looking forward to working with Eagle. Our new release is an album of songs that inspired Simple Minds to make music in the first place." As well as the Doors' classic, the album, called Neon Lights, will include Simple Minds' versions of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World, Van Morrison's Gloria and Patti Smith's Dancing Barefoot. Due out in September, it's the first new release from the band since 1998's album Neapolis and single Glitterball. And to back up the CD, a world-wide headline tour is also planned within the next 18 months. The group's newfound popularity is all thanks to dance act Raven Maize's track The Real Life, which sampled Simple Minds' Theme From Great Cities and woke up the club scene to the Eighties group. Now it looks as if there are even bigger things on the horizon for Jim, who is already worth pounds 40million. Simple Minds were formed in Glasgow in 1978. Throughout the Eighties, the band's only real rivals were U2 and they racked up a string of hits including Don't You (Forget About Me), Alive & Kicking and Waterfront. Jim added: "More than two decades later, to us, creating music is still connected to that initial sense of spirit, passion and play. "We are flattered by an increasing emergence of a generation of artists and producers seemingly keen on sampling and covering our style of music, so it seemed timely for us to once again spend some time experiencing life as a covers band. Album tributo per Kevin Wilkinson

Sul sito www.kevinwilkinson.com/ è possibile trovare informazioni sull'album tributo per Kevin Wilkinson, batterista dei China Crisis, gruppo abbastanza noto negli anni '80. La band ha fatto da supporto ai Simple Minds in un paio di tour e aveva come manager Bruce Findlay. Toorkwaz

Sul sito di Toorkwaz, azienda creatrice del layout di Neapolis, ci sono dei collegamenti coi Simple Minds, citati però come "Neon Cowboys". Sullo stesso sito sono presenti anche gli "Sly silver sly", band di Paul, fratello di Jim. In una delle foto presenti, tratta dal retro dell'album, figura il titolo "Happy is the man", evidentemente ripresa dai Simple durante una delle sessioni di registrazione del nuovo disco.

Varie...

Simon Cornwell nella sezione news del suo sito apre dicendo : "I Simple Minds sono troppo impegnati per intraprendere un tour quest'anno". Simon chiede di leggere tra le righe di questo messaggio preannunciando un anno pieno di soddisfazioni per noi fans: è evidente che lui sa qualcosa ma non può dirla. Nel frattempo la partecipazione di Jim e Charlie al Night of the Proms a Nizza è confermata. Notizia pericolosa: un pazzoide ha messo in vendita su E-bay, anche se per poco tempo, il nuovo album fantasma. Pazzo!!! L'altra notizia, anche se minore, è che Billy Idol farà una cover di Don't you, scritta dal suo attuale produttore Keith Forsey, non si sa se rivisiterà la versione dei Minds o quella originaria poi stravolta dai Simples. Sembra anche che Jim parteciperà al prossimo disco di Franco Battiato. [Grazie Eliana! Grazie Mimmone!]

Jim Kerr... parla di nuovo

Nel nuovo ruolo di "ambassador of Scotland" ed in qualità di padre di tre figli (James, Yasmin e la figliastra Natalie), Jim Kerr spera di essere di ispirazione per i giovani, come appare in una intervista sul Sunday Times del 7/1/2001. In tale intervista Jim Kerr ricorda la sua infanzia ed adolescenza a Toryglen (Glasgow), il sostegno dei genitori ed i loro solidi e saggi principi (fai sempre del tuo meglio e sarai sicuro di riuscire, tratta gli altri come vorresti trattassero te), gli stessi che ripete ai suoi figli oltre alla convinzione che per ottenere qualsiasi risultato nella vita , il talento è importante, ma deve essere supportato ed amplificato da una determinata fiducia in se stessi. Così come incoraggia i suoi figli ad avere un sogno ed a fare il possibile per farlo diventare realtà, spera di poter ispirare molti giovani a fare lo stesso.Oltre a ciò, nel suo nuovo ruolo ed anche grazie alla popolarità dei Simple Minds , sarebbe gratificato di pubblicizzare il profilo della Scozia quale nazione fiduciosa in se stessa, capace, in via di sviluppo. Rotto il contratto con la EMI

Direttamente dal sito Internet del quotidiano inglese The Sun: EMI lose their minds Out of their minds ... Jim and boys were axed by record company SIMPLE MINDS have been dumped by their record company after a series of bust-ups. EMI refused to release the band's new album Our Secrets Are The Same, sparking a legal dispute. Jim Kerr, frontman of the band which sold 30 MILLION albums in the '80s, said: "Things broke down and we took the plunge by saying to them, 'We would rather not work with you on this record and we'd like to take it back.' They did remix some tracks but it was all very paltry. "Had there been enthusiasm the record would have come out but EMI weren't very enthusiastic about putting it out. We looked to them for leadership and direction but we felt it wasn't there." The band, whose hits include Don't You Forget About Me and Alive And Kicking, are now locked in a legal battle with EMI, who last night refused to comment. Simple Minds' departure comes just weeks after fellow '80s favourites Simply Red were axed by Warner Brothers. Kerr also told me that his eight-year-old son James is coping well with the break-up of his mum Patsy Kensit's marriage to Liam Gallagher. He said: 'James is great. People split up and you have to get on with it. We told him that and he understands.'

New album

[L'amico Marc Perez Fernandez mi ha scritto importanti news sul nuovo disco:] Ciao Luca!!!!, Sono eccitati!!!!!. La questa radiotrasmittente di la Radio Nazionale di Catalunya, ha emesso le nuove canzoni di nuovo album delle Simple Minds. Le ho registrate e secondo i critici, è la cosa migliore che hanno fatto le Simple Minds durante molti anni. Un suono duro, con i guitars eccezionali, voce strappata e fa maturare d'un Jim pieno e d'unsuono con un certo tocco elettronico. Potrei ascoltare, dal momento che, "Jeweller's to the stars " e " Swining to are's the sun ". Luca, la disoccupazione da non ascoltare loro e pricipalmente "Jewelle'rs to the stars" possono essere grandi single. L'altoparlante, Jordi Tardà, che ha fatto menzione ad un email in cui ha chiesto a lui che ha usato i suoi imfluencias per ottenere l'album, non ha detto nulla della data della pubblicazione. Ma ha commentato a quer serio in pochi mesi. Egualmente ha detto i wonders del disco, quello già lo ha e di quale proverà a fare a me con una copia. Ma credo che sia difficile. Saluti. Marc.

Alle 1 dell'11 luglio, dopo una settimana che l'appuntamento era fissato, mi telefonano dalla EMI e mi dicono che non possono farmi ascoltare l'album perché non è ancora nella sua versione definitiva! Perciò tutto sfumato. Mi hanno detto: "Risentiamoci dopo l'estate e vediamo se per quell'epoca sarà nella sua veste definitiva e se potrò fartelo ascoltare". Lascio a voi l'interpretazione delle parole "versione definitiva". E' finito o no questo album? E cos'è questa storia di Our Secrets Are The Same? Prima titolo provvisorio, poi smentito e ora riconfermato? Effettivamente era un invito anomalo, contrastava con il comportamento che la EMI tiene tuttora. Tutto ciò riconferma, secondo me, la volontà di non far trapelare nulla. Il muro di silenzio rimane invalicabile. Anche questa una scelta solo in parte comprensibile e dannosissima per la nostra band; un ulteriore colpo alla loro immagine e credibilità. A questo punto però non si capisce più dove finisca la responsabilità della EMI e dove inizi quella dei due leader. Cris

L'album fantasma

Odio le major e lo show-biz però a volte anche lì si trova qualcuno che merita di essere ringraziato perché con un piccolo gesto ti rende più facile la vita. Fortunatamente questo è il caso infatti il nostro riferimento alla EMI mi ha invitato ad ascoltare l'Album Fantasma che giace nelle loro segrete. Così Mercoledì 12 vado su a Milano e avverrà l'incontro. Spero che non sia troppo scioccante e che Jim & Charlie non abbiano involontariamente registrato voci dall'al di là, the Next World. A proposito di Next World, il nostro riferimento, che è entrato in possesso dell'album da quest'anno, dice sotto forma di demo, apprezza molto la nuova ectoplasmica creatura che sarebbe una via di mezzo fra GNFTNW e Néapolis, ovvero meno arrabbiato del primo, ma sempre rock, e meno sperimentale del secondo, ma sempre piuttosto elettronico. Resta il fatto che non ha titolo, non si sa quando esce e nemmeno si parla di singolo. Vi saprò dire, se avrò la forza di tornare ai miei lidi. Gocce di Simple Minds.

Da I Viaggi Di Repubblica - 22.6.00 Nell'articolo "Festival Europei" di Daniele Chieffi, accanto a una carrellata dei maggiori festival di questo 2000, sono elencati 10 dei maggiori album live degli anni 70/80. Ne segue una classifica e i Simple Minds vi trovano posto con "Live In The City Of Light" sullo stesso piano di Rolling Stone, Genesis e Peter Gabriel, Deep Purple, Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon e U2. Scrive Chieffi sotto la foto della copertina: "Il gruppo Inglese, ora un po' in sordina, è stato una della band più importanti del Rock Inglese anni 80/90. In questo doppio, con splendide versioni live e un Jim Kerr in ottima forma, c'è tutta la loro storia musicale da New Gold Dream a Don't You". Inutile sottolineare la sorpresa e il piacere per vederli ricordati in un momento di totale silenzio come questo. Concludo con una curiosità da "Musica Di Repubblica" sempre del 22 scorso: Il 28 Maggio scorso il mio conterraneo Piero Pelù ha incontrato in forma strettamente riservata Bob Clearmountain, in quel dell'Aretino, in occasione di uno showcase per pochi intimi allestito per presentare il suo ultimo album e per testare apparecchiature audio di ultimissima generazione. In questa occasione il tecnico di Pelù, Lorenzo Tommasini si è avvalso dell'esperienza del famoso produttore Americano. Pare che Clearmountain e Pelù abbiano in progetto di collaborare a un futuro live album dell'ex-leader dei Litfiba. Fidel Cris

Blow Up live... again!

Michele 'Spaccazza' Laricchia ci scrive: 'Ciao a tutti mitici amici dei Simple Minds e dei Blow Up! Good News from Capurso!!! Finalmente possiamo confermare la data di venerdi 11 agosto 2000 a Capurso. Ieri sera, Io e Francesco, abbiamo tenuto una riunione con i vari responsabili della vita ecclesiastica di Capurso e nella mattinata di oggi invece ci è stato l'incontro presso il Palazzo Comunale con l' Assessore allo sport e allo spettacolo. Il nostro programma ha scioccato un po' tutti, e naturalmente, tutti hanno accettato quelle che sono le nostre richieste, ma soprattutto offerto la loro piena disponibilità a seguirci in tutto e per tutto. La serata è organizzata nell'ambito delle manifestazioni giubilari, e che saranno presenti gruppi di giovani francesi, croati, ragazzi delle comunità vicine a Capurso, e naturalmente i vertici di "Le Menti - Simple Minds Fans Club" da Firenze, Roma, Chiasso, Martina Franca ecc. L'esibizione dei Blow Up è prevista per le ore 22.15, minuto più minuto meno, e durerà circa 60 minuti. Scaletta rigorosamente Simple Minds ma soprattutto RIGOROSAMENTE SEGRETA. Naturalmente non dovrebbe esserci bisogno di insistenza da parte nostra... letti ce ne sono a sufficenza per tutti, l'accoglienza dalle nostre parti è il pezzo forte (ve lo potrà sicuramente confermare The Travelling man), quindi prenotatevi in fretta - NOI VI ASPETTIAMO!!!!!!! Mark Schulman

Grazie a Susanne Trauten, nostra amica Tedesca e fan dei Simple Minds, abbiamo potuto avere notizie di Mark Schulman (batterista principale in GNFTNW). Continua la sua attività di sessionist. Dopo aver partecipato al tour mondiale di Cher, il "Believe" Tour, il 26 Maggio scorso è intervenuto al "Super Drumming", festival di grandi batteristi svoltosi in a Nonnweiler in Germania. Lo spettacolo è iniziato alle 8 di sera con alcune band minori ed è proseguito con l'esibizione del Tedesco Jost Nickel, batterista del cantante Thomas D e con l'eccellente Marco Minnemann degli H-Blockx. Poi si è esibito Mike Shapiro, docente della LAMA, Los Angeles Music Academy, che è stato batterista anche di Al Jarreau e Sergio Mendes. Mark Schulman, anche lui docente della Los Angeles Music Academy era l'attrazione principale che ha chiuso la serata. La sua eccellente performance è durata 35 minuti ed è stata intervallata da uno scambio di domande e risposte fra lui e il pubblico. Chiusura di fuoco con una jam session che ha visto Mark suonare insieme a Marco Minnemann e Mike Shapiro. Il giorno seguente ha tenuto una drum clinic e si è poi recato a colazione con tutti i batteristi. Mark è tuttora ricordato con molto affetto dai fans dei Simple Minds, insieme a Malcom Foster che però ha perso di vista per cui non sa cosa ne sia attualmente di lui. Ovviamente non ha avuto più alcun contatto nemmeno con i Simple Minds dopo il 1995. Susan conclude il suo resoconto con i saluti che Mark manda a tutto il fan club de Le Menti. Nuovo album (?)

Sempre e ancora niente news sul nuovo album, "Album Fantasma". Ho appena telefonato alla EMI e le notizie sono esattamente le stesse delle altre succursali Europee. Hanno chiaramente detto che l'album è pronto ma NON SI SA quando esce, forse a fine estate. Non sapevano niente altro, nemmeno del singolo. La realtà è che non vogliono farci sapere. Penso che a questo punto cominci a diventare attendibile l'opinione di Simon secondo il quale i Minds sono già usciti dalla Chrysalis/EMI (il contratto era in realtà solo per due album) e si dedicheranno alla Mind Mood, la loro etichetta indipendente. Sempre secondo Simon, la EMI non ha né fretta, né interesse a fare uscire l'album, visto che non i nostri non sono più sfruttabili, aggiungo io, ma prima o poi dovranno decidersi. Cris

Simon Cornwell ha ricevuto una email da Derek Forbes. In sintesi ha scritto: Mel Gaynor e Derek Forbes parteciperanno ad un concerto di beneficienza in Italia per il 'Terence Higgins Trust' con Sham 69. La band sarà composta da Mel Gaynor, Derek Forbes, Angela Capel, Graeme Clark e Neil Mitchell dei Wet Wet Wet. In questo momento non siconoscono ancora la data e il luogo del concerto.." Singolo e album - voci...

Pare che voci dalla EMI Tedesca parlino di abbandono da parte di Kerr e Burchill a favore della loro etichetta indipendente, la Mind Mood. Comunque il prossimo album uscirà ancora sotto la vecchia etichetta. SI DICE che il primo singolo, "Space", esca il 12 Giugno; che l'album (nessun titolo definitivo) esca il 28 Giugno; che non ci sarà tour, spostato al 2001, ci saranno solo delle apparizioni promozionali, probabilmente qualche special in radio e TV. Ancora niente si sa sulla line up (Forbes e Gaynor sono definitivamente fuori mentre Taylor dovrebbe essere sempre alle tastiere).

'Band for the tribes' cover band

Dave Kelly, chitarrista della grande cover band 'Band for the tribes' che si è esibita alla convention londinese dell'estate scorsa, scrive: "With it being unlikely that there will be a convention this year. I was just wondering who would be interested in a Band For the Tribes gig in Germany? NOTHING has been planned yet, but we were intending to play Germany as a warm up gig for any convention. If we get enough people SERIOUSLY interested in this, then we could possibly ahead and arrange a date. We would of course try not to clash the date with any Simple Minds gig or Euro 2000, we could perhaps plan it around any German dates. I have completed about 20 new songs since the last convention and there is of course the new album to come. The proposed set would be - 2 hours and would only have 3 songs from the Camden Underworld set. Imola, 2 aprile: convention dei fanclub

Delia scrive così: INIZIO PRIMAVERA DI... PROMESSE... dal sito alla realtà Era - l'ormai lontano - fine millennio. Lachi ed io, a 500 km di distanza, si lavorava in sordina con lo scopo di far partecipi ed integrare i fans secondo quella che è la loro (la nostra) comune passione. Quando un giorno, molto discretamente, ma assolutamente determinato, si fa avanti un certo MIMMO. "Ehy, sto cercando di mettere insieme una band per... la scaletta del millennio!" ... e fu così che dall'Alpe (bè un po' più in giù) alle Piramidi (un po' più in su), passando per Arno e Tevere si attivavano connessioni di solidarietà e appoggi morali che si attualizzeranno... ad IMOLA, DOMENICA, 2 APRILE, dove musica, ricordi, passioni, brividi di gioia e conoscenze via cavo la faranno da padroni di fronte alla senz'altro memorabile e sudata PERFORMANCE dei BLOW UP, la grande cover band di Mimmo & soci. Ancora Mick McNeil...

Cris mi ha scritto: "Ieri mi è arrivata l'edizione commerciale dell'album di McNeil, autografato con dedica su ogni CD! Allegato un suo messaggio standard in cui spiega gli sforzi finanziari che hanno dovuto affrontare e i margini di guadagno trascurabili, essendo la loro etichetta indipendente e ancora molto giovane, per cui chiede di non copiare il CD ma di invogliare il pubblico a comprarlo, appoggiando così la loro attività e permettendo loro di continuare a pubblicare materiale senza abbassare il loro standard qualitativo. Mai mi sarei immaginata che McNeil, il carismatico e misterioso tastierista dei Simple Minds, un giorno avrebbe dialogato con noi come un nostro pari, mai avrei immaginato che si sarebbe rivolto al suo pubblico come un ragazzo esordiente che ha bisogno del nostro aiuto. Mick ci ringrazia e ci chiede un favore e noi non possiamo che ricambiarlo della sua gentilezza e della sua considerazione venendogli incontro, per cui Le Menti dichiara che non distribuirà registrazioni del suo album."

La prima recensione del disco di Mick McNeil

Ho appena terminato l'ascolto del promo di "People, Places And Things". Pochissime parole per non rovinare la sorpresa. Dico solo che è esattamente quello che mi aspettavo da McNeil se non di più: un doppio assolutamente fenomenale, le mille capriole di un grande delle tastiere nel pieno del suo vigore. C'è un McNeil completo: quello dei tempi d'oro dei Minds, poi il McNeil nuovo alle prese con suoni sperimentali ma sempre con quella innata raffinatezza che l'ha contraddistinto sin dagli inizi della carriera e il McNeil segreto, di una tenerezza struggente e insospettata che suona solo per sé stesso ma che umilmente si piega al tuo giudizio e lo attende con ansia. Ha trovato il coraggio di uscire allo scoperto e di mettersi a nudo aspettando il nostro giudizio. Il mio giudizio è pienamente positivo sin dall'artwork dell'album dal cui booklet spicca subito l'intimità di McNeil. Direi che tutto l'album è un diario con immagini, pensieri, sensazioni, un mare di sensazioni ed emozioni da parte di un uomo dalla personalità, solitaria, introspettiva, forse difficile ma anche capace di una dolcezza estrema, come troviamo nel 1° CD dedicato alla notte, come troviamo nelle immagini con i suoi figli e come troviamo nella poesia estremamente commovente dove descrive un luogo che lui chiama Mairi Beach. Non posso dire altro, ora il giudizio passa a voi. Domani ti mando la traduzione Inglese. Ciao da Cris la sconvolta.

E' davvero bello e inoltre, sulle note di copertina ha scritto: "biggest thanx and greatfullness:................Derek and his family.........." I know that I said the album would be ready by the end of last year, and really it was but I had a little delay with the artwork for the sleeve and with all the holiday stuff in the middle it has held me back a little. But not to worry we are ready to go now. As I have already said that we will put a PObox # in place for anyone who feels a little apprehensive about leaving personal credit card details on the secure server which is perfectly understandable, even though I believe more and more people are using such services. MixMuzik UPDATE No.1

'Greetings from MixMuzik, I am very sorry that I have not been more informative over the last few weeks.We now have a clearer view of how things can be done. At the moment the website is being updated and the secure server should be opened on the last day of the year. If only for me to say that I actually got it going in 1999. I have completed the recording and I am, well quite happy with it. To tell you the truth I don't think that I have ever been completely happy with anything yet, but at least with this project I only have myself to blame, no one told me what to do or what not to do.So I decided to put together a rather large selection of quite varied ideas from over the last ten years. I know that you wont like all of them you may not even like any of them, either way what ever you like or don't like, I would love you to tell me what you think. And if you really hate it I promise you a complete refund. for anyone who feels a little cautious about leaving credit card details on the internet we have set up a P.O. box. Details will be on the site. I have also put some other slightly off the wall friends of mine that I have worked with last year along with a new Rabbie Burns project that I would love to develop on to the mix records page, I will also update the samples for you to listen to, and your comments are welcome here too. "Nel Gennaio 1989 vennero ai nostri uffici di Edimburgo due ragazze Cilene per chiederci di prendere parte a un concerto laggiù, le incontrai e rimasi completamente colpito dalla loro forza, la loro capacità di recupero e dalla loro fede. Erano vittime di un destino estremo... il loro viso era bruciato, i loro ragazzi erano stati uccisi, dovevano dare testimonianza di questo, eppure erano lì, con il loro spirito intatto, votate alla loro missione ma ancora così vulnerabili. Mi dettero un libro su Jara". Questo raccontava Jim ad Alfred Bos per il Song Book di Street Fighting Years. Probabile che parlasse della biografia di Jara, scritta da sua moglie nel 1983 ed ora disponibile anche in Italia. maratona Simple in radio?

Poco fa, mentre ero in coda sul Grande Raccordo Anulare di Roma con lo stereo acceso, mi sono imbattuto su Radio Vaticana (così recitava l'RDS), la quale dalle 7:30 trasmetteva per intero Good News From The Next World. In questo momento sono le 8:10, io sono riuscito a tornare a casa e c'è And The Band Played On. Che sia impazzito il loro computer? Ok, ecco svelato l'arcano: in questo momento (8:15) una dolce voce femminile ha annunciato che "Per la rubrica 'Pop & Rock' avete ascoltato i Simple Minds in una selezione dall'album Good News From The Next World". Selezione? Hanno trasmesso di fila i primi 7 pezzi! Che sia una benedizione sui nostri eroi proprio alla vigilia dell'evento giubilare...? =;-)

"Ciao a tutti! Mi ha appena telefonato Lele Merlini, un membro del nostro club. Mi ha detto che suo fratello Gigi ha incontrato Jim più o meno a mezzogiorno, a Londra. Jim era fuori dallo Europe Store con un sacchetto in mano e stava bene, molto rilassato. Hanno chicchierato un po'; Jim ha detto che il nuovo disco uscirà tra poco (non ha specificato una data). Quando Gigi gli ha chiesto di Mel, ha risposto dicendo: 'Sta suonando'. Poi Jim ha iniziato a fare un sacco di domande, il tempo è passato e i due si sono salutati con un grande abbraccio. Questa notizia è apparsa sul quotidiano britannico Daily Record: MILLIONAIRE pop star Jim Kerr has returned to his Glasgow roots to become a property tycoon. The Simple Minds singer has just bought two exclusive pounds 275,000 American loft-style flats at Todd Buildings in his home town. The Merchant City penthouse flats are a far cry from his childhood in the tenements of Toryglen. Kerr also recently bought a pounds 300,000 luxury two-bedroom apartment just yards from the new Scottish Parliament at Holyrood. The singer - worth around pounds 40million - could earn pounds 5000 a month renting out the flats. Cristina a Brindisi

"Se la pioggia non li avesse bloccati solo dopo 1/2 ora sarebbe stato un concerto storico; musica poderosa basata su due chitarre, basso e batteria. Le tastiere erano solo un riempitivo.Immaginatevi lo stile ipnotico dei primi Minds abbinato alla potenza rock data da Mel.
Scaletta parziale (per la pioggia):
Theme For Great Cities, 30 Frames, Changeling, Beautiful People - nuova scritta da Dan e McVeigh, un bellissimo rock nero con base blues, fantastica!, Up On The Catwalk cantata da un Mel non adatto e senza voce, I Travel, Pleasantly Disturbed in una indescrivibile versione vicina all'originale ma molto più ipnotica ed estremamente sensuale, eseguita dalla loro cantante di cui non so il nome, con voce flebile e movenze che aumentavano la sensualità del tutto, fra vapori, pioggia incandescente e un cielo lampeggiante. Purtroppo a questo punto abbiamo avuto una pausa con Emiliana, la Bjork italiana.
I Nostri riprendono con Song For The Peace, abituale banale canzone scritta per l'occasione, mielosa come in genere tutte le canzoni di questo tipo, poi la pioggia ci ha bloccato. Era cantata dal percussionista, bella voce veramente.
Dan si difende con la voce, a me piace molto, ma Kerr rimane assolutamente insostituibile. Comunque è il loro unico neo, la musica è da brividi, come il soundcheck ci aveva anticipato, Aspettiamo che i ragazzi si stabilizzino.
Un concerto storico, i vecchi classici sono ancora ottimi e vivi. Forse altri concerti Italiani ai primi del 2000. More info to come..... Finito, scappo.

concerto di Brindisi

"Caro luca,
ti scrivo questa tristissima e-mail per raccontarti le cose incredibili e assurde che sono capitate ieri.
Comincio col dirti che la giornata era cominciata benissimo, in quanto dopo aver incontrato Crstina e Lele il gentilissimo e squisito Caroppo (uno degli organizzatori) ci ha portato nel comitato dove ci sono stati consegnati dei pass per poter accedere al luogo del concerto e nel backstage liberamente. Così ci siamo precipitati allo stadio perché c'era il soundcheck. E così allo stadio abbiamo trovato sul palco Mel e Derek in tutto il loro splendore!!!!!!! Ci siamo trattenuti lì e abbiamo assistito a tutto il soundcheck che, ti posso assicurare, è stato molto meglio dello scempio che abbiamo visto la sera. Mel e Derek sembravano molto rilassati e sono stati molto disponibili come al solito con noi. Dopo averci salutato (ma che per caso ormai riconoscono Cristina??), abbiamo fatto un paio di foto insieme, qualche autografo di rito e poi li abbiamo lasciati lavorare. Il soundcheck è stato magnifico: hanno provato I TRAVEL, BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE, SWEAT IN BULLET e una splendida versione di UP ON THE CATWALK con Derek a cantare, con un Mel spaventoso e con un chitarrista davvero grandioso: Ray McVeigh, ex chitarrista dei Sex Pistols. Tutti eravamo concordi nel dire che dal punto di vista musicale era una versione nettamente superiore a quella dei minds VERI! E già ti dico dei minds veri perché purtroppo per tutti i gg. precedenti e per il giorno del concerto è stato usato il nome dei Simple Minds a sproposito come non mai. Quelli che hanno suonato ieri a Brindisi non erano, non sono e non saranno mai i SIMPLE MINDS!!! Questo te la dico nonostante l'immenso ed infinito affetto che mi lega a Derek e Mel (che ritengo davvero essere il più grande batterista al mondo).
Poi per il resto della mattinata abbiamo ascoltato campionamenti e registrazioni varie di Waterfront, 70 cities, Colours fly, ecc., illudendoci che le avremmo ascoltate la sera.... Ma veniamo allo spettacolo.....
Nella mia vita ho visto diversi concerti e non solo dei minds, ma mai ero riuscito a trovare un' organizzazione così incredibilmente scandalosa; ma andiamo con ordine.Innanzi tutto è subito saltato agli occhi l'incredibile e sproporzionato numero di forze di sicurezza e security (quest'ultima gestita in modo pessimo davvero); la croce rossa sembrava un esercito: avevamo tre crocerossine per ogni spettatore presente. Questo è il limite di una città che non è abituata a vivere eventi né piccoli né grandi, e che mi auguro non ne viva mai più. Poi abbiamo dovuto constatare che il pubblico era praticamente inesistente: lo stadio era deserto e nonostante le nostre preghiere sarebbe rimasto deserto fino alla fine. Non più di 150 persone hanno assistito al pietoso spettacolo, nonostante la successiva apertura delle porte. Il concerto sarebbe dovuto iniziare intorno alle 17 ma (mi viene da ridere) all 20:15 erano ancora li che provavano i gruppi spalla.
Dopo aver appreso del forfait della Nielsen (da me ampiamente pronosticato) e di Kirk Brandon abbiamo avuto la comunicazione che anche Best non sarebbe venuto: così ha presentato la serata un povero a lui (espressione dialettale) che non sapeva né l'inglese, né l'italiano!
Così finalmente alle 20:30 il concerto è iniziato e la musica ha finalmente potuto deliziare le orecchie di polizia carabinieri, guardia di finanza, croce rossa, security e dulcis in fundo gli ispettori della siae......ALE' OOHH!!!!
Salto a pié pari le esibizioni stringate dei gruppi spalla e veniamo a quella dei......................... FORBES, GAYNOR and FRIENDS. Dopo un' attesa lunghissima che è quasi stata vanificata da un temporale, finalmente sono saliti sul palco i nostri amici: con loro c'erano il fratello di Mel, un percussionista e due vocalist, tra cui la figlia di Mel, davvero molto ma molto carina. L' esibizione è iniziata con THEME FOR GREAT CITIES, stupenda come sl solito, e poi è andata avanti con (in rigoroso ordine sparso): UP ON THE CATWALK, CHANGELING, 30 FRAMES A SECOND, BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE, I TRAVEL e la nuova canzone della quale non mi ricordo il titolo. Abbiamo aspettato dunque una mattinata intero per ascoltare appena 5 canzoni dei minds. Tra l'altro le versioni erano evidentemente peggiorate rispetto alla mattina e catwalk è stata cantata da Mel: decisamente meglio Derek. Poi sono tornati sul palco e il tastierista si è esibito alla cornamusa in When the saints mentre tutti gli altri ballavano. Sono poi riuscito ad aprirmi un varco nella immensa folla e ho passato la mia bandiera della scozia a derek che la ha sventolata allegramente. La serata si è poi chiusa con il backstage nel quale abbiamo salutato i componenti della band e ovviamente Mel e Derek dandogli appuntamento alla prossima volta................... sperando che sia con i minds!

Domenica 8 mi è arrivata un'altra email da parte di Roberto Caroppo, vice presidente del Comitato "In Aid of Worldwide Children's". Io non ero a Roma e quindi la pubblico solo ora:

"Caro Lachi ti invio in anteprima delle notizie ricavate dal fax che Mel mi ha spedito da Londra.
Mel è gia stato a Brindisi per vedere il luogo del concerto e dovrebbe ritornare comunque il 16 agosto.
Sono confermate quindi le voci sul concerto di Mel & Derek con una lineup nuova e il repertorio dei "vecchi" Simple Minds e che verrà composta una nuova canzone per l'evento."

"Una volta superate le difficoltà burocratiche relative al luogo (al 99% lo stadio comunale di Brindisi) confermiamo la data prevista per il concerto "In Aid of worldwide children's" con Simple Minds, Repubblica, The Loft ed altri artisti che si stanno unendo. Il concerto è dedicato alla raccolta di fondi per i bambini coinvolti dal conflitto dei Balcani kosovari, albanesi, serbi e rom) indipendentemente dalle forzate divisioni etniche."

Non vi sembra una bella notizia? ...e poi è confermata da una fonte autorevole!

Mel & Derek a Brindisi?

Già da diverso tempo circolano voci sul concerto di Mel & Derek con una lineup nuova e il repertorio dei "vecchi" Simple Minds. In questi casi è bene cercare delle conferme a queste voci e quindi solo ora riporto quella che mi sembra essere una notizia "sicura".
Sul Tempo di ieri è apparsa una intervista a Mel in cui parla del probabile concerto con Derek in Italia:

"Non sembra che Mel abbia lasciato il gruppo; dall'articolo si evince che i Minds suoneranno a Brindisi il 29/08/1999 (Palaelio?) e che il nuovo album uscirà nel 2000; sembra inoltre che verrà composta una nuova canzone per l'evento e forse anche un sito internet"

Steel Pulse

Vi ricordate gli Steel Pulse? Era la band reggae che i Simple Minds supportarono in quella lontana serata di debutto del 17 Gennaio 1978 al Satellite City di Glasgow . Ieri, 8.7.99 a Latisana (Udine), si è aperto il Rototom Soundsplash Festival, 6° Festival Internazionale di musica Reggae. Ogni sera una maratona musicale che termina all'alba. Gli headliner di questa prima serata sono stati proprio gli Steel Pulse che si sono presentati con una formazione di 10 elementi fra musicisti e ballerini. Con la loro presenza spumeggiante hanno riempito completamente il pur grandissimo palco. Un bellissimo concerto fatto di improvvisazioni e divertimento puro che ha coinvolto fisicamente un pubblico numeroso ed entusiasta. E devo dire che è stato trascinante anche per chi non ama particolarmente il reggae. Il sound degli Steel Pulse è un reggae Inglese, più scabro ed asciutto rispetto a quello dolce e lento di origine Gamaicana. A volte si rifà molto allo Ska, che poi è il padre del Reggae, a volte sfocia nel rock, elettronico toccando quasi la Techno. La scaletta ha presentato brani nuovi accanto a vecchi classici. Il festival si chiude il 12. 7. Chi ha la possibilità ci vada perché merita veramente la pena. [Fonte: Cristina]

nuovo singolo / nuovo album

"The Match, il film la cui colonna sonora conterrà "Hello", il nuovo pezzo dei Simple, dovrebbe uscire attorno alla metà di luglio.
Per quanto riguarda il nuovo album, sembra che sarà completato per la metà di agosto, quindi l'uscita potrebbe essere tra settembre 99 e gennaio 2000!

Sembra che Mel e Derek abbiano deciso di lasciare il gruppo ancora una volta. Le motivazioni non si conoscono ancora, ma sembra ormai sicuro, nonostante (ovviamente) nessun annuncio ufficiale sia comparso su simpleminds.com =:-(

La scaletta è stata questa:
Waterfront - Someone, Somewhere (In Summertime) - Alive and Kicking - Don't You.
La performance, stando a quanto scritto sulla mailing list da alcuni amici presenti, è stata degna dei Simple.
Il lato negativo della serata è stata l'assenza sul palco di Mel e Derek, che invece avevano suonato in precedenza alcuni brani dei Led Zeppelin, con Derek addirittura alla chitarra solista!
Con Jim e Charlie c'erano Mark Taylor, Mark Kerr (il secondo fratello di Jim) e un bassista sconosciuto.

Non sa quale sia il disco, ma sarà certamente accompagnato da un certifcato di autenticità firmato dallo stesso Bruce! Ovviamente Clive invita tutti noi a preparare i portafogli!

Glasgow, 31 maggio!

I Simple Minds suoneranno il 31 maggio al SECC di Glasgow in occasione del concerto organizzato per aiutare le vittime della guerra del Kosovo.
Il prezzo del biglietto è di 20 sterline e dovrebbero eseguire 5 o 6 pezzi, anche se non si conosce ancora la scaletta. Jim si è dichiarato entusiasta, sottolineando che in Scozia non era mai stato organizzato un evento simile.
Ci saranno anche Jimmy Sommerville e altri artisti scozzesi.

notizie dalla EMI

Le ultime da un rappresentante della Emi Italiana:

niente 1° Maggio né Nèapolis Festival per i Minds, che lui ne sappia (e se lui non sa nulla vuol dire che la notizia è falsa). Ha ribadito: niente CD live, specificando che sono sempre state voci di corridoio esterne alla EMI. Le tensioni fra EMI e band fanno pensare che il prossimo album può uscire sotto la EMI come può anche accadere diversamente (ma io penso che a questo punto esca per la EMI). Quando io gli ho rammentato il contratto che i Minds dovrebbero avere firmato per altri 4 album, mi ha detto che non lo sapeva perché la decisione di far uscire ogni album sotto una certa etichetta può anche variare di volta in volta (?).
Comunque voci di un distacco continuano a circolare: la EMI tornerebbe ad occuparsi solo delle edizioni come faceva prima e i diritti sui brani rimarrebbero alla band e alla loro etichetta indipendente, se ho capito bene.

Recentemente, sulla mailing list era stati inviate diverse notizie riguardanti il nuovo disco da parte di una ragazzo francese che diceva di lavorare alla Chrysalis. Ha 'confessato' che era (quasi) tutto falso, quindi ecco un breve riepilogo di ciò che è vero e ciò che è falso:

- la lista dei demo è completa
- non è previsto un nuovo singolo prima dell'estate
- il produttore dell'album è ancora sconosciuto.

D'ora in poi, a maggior ragione, tutte le notizie provenienti da fonti (semi)sconosciute che troverete su queste pagine saranno accuratamente controllate

Clive, uno degli organizzatori, mi ha scritto che vorrebbe creare un muro fatto di foto fatte da ognuno dei partecipanti. Lui parla di "pvc wallets" da attaccare insieme, ma dice che ci sarà da valutarne il costo, forse eccessivo. Che ne pensate?

"I want to clear-up things: Mel has not left Simple Minds. I met the band (Jim & Charlie) in London E.M.I. office 10 days ago and they told me their plan to enter the studio in april in order to record their new album WITH THE HELP OF THEIR DRUMMER MEL GAYNOR.

About the new demos, I can say that they sound amazing, and there are at least a couple of strong singles which should do well into the charts. We hope the new lp will sell better than neapolis which was released when Chrysalis was still under reorganisation and SM had no real management (since the departure of Clive banks). And I must confess at the time we focused much more on Robbie Williams than on SM! Currently we are working on a new compilation called Simple Minds singles collection 79-99 containing every SM 7" single from 79 to present days. In order to promote it we plan to release either New Gold Dream or I travel in a remixed form. If we manage to clear-up things soon with our friends of Virgin rec., the compilation should be released around mid-april. The new studio album is still planned for september. That's about all.

- It seems that Mel has left again (no reasons are given yet). Brian Mcgee helped them demoeing and is supposed to be part to the new line-up. Derek is still there and Kevin Hunter has been recruited as a second guitarist (he will also do some backing vocals) As you know he has co-written 6 of the new tracks with Jim and Charlie.
- Proper recording will take place in Glasgow at Ca Va studios from early april to June. Steve Lipson will be producing with the help of Charlie and Peter walsh (who will mix the album).
- I don't have any information about Mick Macneil involvement but as the recording takes place in Glasgow, everything is possible. But seriously I doubt it...
- About a live album, at Chrysalis there is currently no plan to release one. So SM may release it through their own label MindsMood.
- finally, Yes they will tour the US at the end of the year : it's their only chance to have the new lp released there."

jim has been in touch with us as regards the convention, and he thinks it it a great idea (he rang shaun!) and he has said that the band will be donating items for the charity auction. so get saving! ;:o)
as i said, jim, charlie and other band members are very enthusiastic about the whole thing, and we hope to maybe see one or more at the convention! (depending on their commitments of course!)

Yes, I have been working on the new Simple Minds record up in Glasgow with Jim and Charlie. We have about 15 new songs that I think are really good. I have wanted to play music with them for years and they were kind enough to let me sit in on their writing sessions. As of right now we are planning to record the record at Jims house near a loch in Scotland in April and May."

I have volunteered to form a tribute band for a one-off performance at the Simple Minds convention. So over the next few I will be asking for possible band members. I play keyboards and guitar but would prefer to be "The Man in the Sky". That means I'm looking for a drummer, bass, guitar and of course and budding Jim Kerr.
This is a serious announcement for serious musicians as you will be playing in front of Minds fans and you will need your own instruments annd P.A. Ideally I would like to choose from the Manchester and North West England area. I will be advertising this locally as well. This makes sense for rehersal reasons. Unless there is a good way of communicating, after all this is the age of Technology. If anyone has the energy then please E-mail me!

New album!

The new Simple Minds album is called Cry and it will be released by Eagle Records on the 1st April. Two formats have been listed (EAGLE EAGCD 196 and EAGLE EAGLT 196). The album will be preceeded by a single. The title track will be released on the 18th March as a two CD set (EAGLE EAGXS218 and EAGLE EAGXA218). This is the transcription of Jim's comment about each song included: Cry - "Crafted pop with an emotional overload - a song sung as an intimate conversation." Jim interview

Jim was interviewed by Mark Goodier last night on BBC Radio Two. The interview lasted around fifteen minutes and included the first airings of Neon Lights and The Man Who Sold The World. Jim confirmed that the album's (new) release date is now the 8th October, but the single will still be released on the 10th September. The new studio album is currently being finished although there was no mention of the Virgin compilation nor Our Secrets Are The Same. Jim revealed that dates would be announced soon with the tour kicking off in the spring. They will be visiting Europe, North America, South America and others. A full transcript will be posted soon on Dream Giver, Simon Cornwell's site.

Simple Minds on Rolling Stones

The glorious Rolling Stones magazine dedicated an article to Simple Minds, related to Neon Lights. Simple Minds, best known for Eighties hits Don't You Forget About Me and Alive and Kicking, will release Neon Lights, an album of cover songs, on September 24th. The group's first recording for Eagle Records -- also home to former major-label rock stars like Robert Palmer and John Mayall -- will consist of interpretations of classics by Van Morrison, Patti Smith, The Doors and The Velvet Underground, among others. There have been so many great songs, so many different sounds, so many artists and acts that have influenced our band. We tried to hone it down to the key acts involved, and you could say that Simple Minds came out on a basis of listening to David Bowie, Roxy Music, Peter Gabriel and of course, Lou Reed. On top of that there was always Patti Smith, The Doors and Neil Young as well. In this collection we have tried to stay faithful to the sentiment of the original songs, but of course we have tried to bring our own heart to the songs. It is never easy to do cover versions. In some ways you are on to a hiding to nothing because the very fact that you're choosing these songs means that you believe that the originals are great in themselves. Grosse novità!

The following article is taken from last friday issue of british newspaper Daily Record del 13 luglio: Kerr's cover version opens new Doors MEETING OF MINDS "SIMPLE MINDS rocker Jim Kerr is to pay homage to Lizard King Jim Morrison on his band's comeback album. The Scots rocker and bandmate Charlie Burchill have a collection of cover versions lined up under their new two-album deal with Eagle Records. And one of the highlight tracks is a reworking of the Doors' classic Hello, I Love You. Jim, 42, said: "We are excited about the new phase and we're looking forward to working with Eagle. Our new release is an album of songs that inspired Simple Minds to make music in the first place." As well as the Doors' classic, the album, called Neon Lights, will include Simple Minds' versions of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World, Van Morrison's Gloria and Patti Smith's Dancing Barefoot. Due out in September, it's the first new release from the band since 1998's album Neapolis and single Glitterball. And to back up the CD, a world-wide headline tour is also planned within the next 18 months. The group's newfound popularity is all thanks to dance act Raven Maize's track The Real Life, which sampled Simple Minds' Theme From Great Cities and woke up the club scene to the Eighties group. Now it looks as if there are even bigger things on the horizon for Jim, who is already worth pounds 40million. Simple Minds were formed in Glasgow in 1978. Throughout the Eighties, the band's only real rivals were U2 and they racked up a string of hits including Don't You (Forget About Me), Alive & Kicking and Waterfront. Jim added: "More than two decades later, to us, creating music is still connected to that initial sense of spirit, passion and play. EMI lose their minds

Directly from The Sun website: Out of their minds ... Jim and boys were axed by record company SIMPLE MINDS have been dumped by their record company after a series of bust-ups. EMI refused to release the band's new album Our Secrets Are The Same, sparking a legal dispute. Jim Kerr, frontman of the band which sold 30 MILLION albums in the '80s, said: "Things broke down and we took the plunge by saying to them, 'We would rather not work with you on this record and we'd like to take it back.' They did remix some tracks but it was all very paltry. "Had there been enthusiasm the record would have come out but EMI weren't very enthusiastic about putting it out. We looked to them for leadership and direction but we felt it wasn't there." The band, whose hits include Don't You Forget About Me and Alive And Kicking, are now locked in a legal battle with EMI, who last night refused to comment. Simple Minds' departure comes just weeks after fellow '80s favourites Simply Red were axed by Warner Brothers. Kerr also told me that his eight-year-old son James is coping well with the break-up of his mum Patsy Kensit's marriage to Liam Gallagher. He said: 'James is great. People split up and you have to get on with it. We told him that and he understands.'

New album

[My friend Marc Perez Fernandez wrote some important news about the new album:] Ciao Luca!!!!, I'm excited!!!!!. Radio Nazionale di Catalunya, has broadcasted some new songs from the new album by Simple Minds. I recorded them and, in critics opinion, this's the best thing they product from many years. A 'hard' sound, with great guitars and voice, with a nice electronic touch. I listened to "Jeweller's to the stars " e " Swining to are's the sun ". Luca, I think that these could be great singles. Ghost album...

You were thinking that the explorer was hearing the Ghost Album in this glorious Wednesday, total swindle! At 1p.m. of tuesday, after a week that the appointment was fixed, EMI called me up and told me that they can't let me hear the album cause it's not in its definitive guise yet! Therefore all ended up in smoke. They said: "Let's hear each other again after the summer and let's see whether it'll be in its definitive guise for that time and whether I can let you hear it". I leave it to you the interpretation of the words: "definitive guise". Is this album finished or not? And what's that story of Our Secrets Are The Same? At firts working title, then denied and now reconfirmed? Actually it was an anomalous invitation, it was against the behaviour that EMI is still keeping. I think all that reconfirm the will not to let transpire anything. The wall of silence remains insurmountable. Also this is a choice just partially understandable and very damaging for our band; a further strike to their image and credibility. At this point, however, we no longer understand where does the EMI's responsibility end and where does it start the two leader's. Cris

The ghost album

I hate the majors and the show-biz but sometimes even there you find someone who deserves to be thanked cause with a wee gesture he makes your life easier. Luckily this is the case, indeed our EMI reference invited me to hear the Ghost Album that's lying in their vaults. So on Wednesday 12 I'll go to Milan where the meeting takes place. I hope it won't be too shocking and that Jim & Charlie didn't unwillingly recorded some voice from the Next World. A propos of Next World, our reference, who took hold of the album just this year under form of demo she says, very much enjoys the new ectoplasmic creature that would be something between GNFTNW and Néapolis, that's less angry than the former, but still rock, and less experimental than the latter, but still pretty electronic. It remains a thing that it got no title, they don't know when it's out and neither they talk about a single. I'll let you know, if I've the strength to come back to my shores. Will you see me with all my hair white, but alive in August? Only time can tell. Cris the explorer

Simple Minds drops

From "I Viaggi Di Repubblica" paper - 22.6.00 In the article "Festival Europei" by Daniele Chieffi, beside a listing of the major festivals of this 2000, there are quoted 10 of the most important live albums of the 70/80ies. It's not a chart and Simple Minds with "Live In The City Of Light" are on the same level of Rolling Stone, Genesis e Peter Gabriel, Deep Purple, Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon e U2. Chieffi writes under the sleeve photo: "The English group, now a bit in stealthily, was one of the most important bands of the English Rock of the 80/90ies. In this double album, with splendid live versions and an excellently fit Jim Kerr, there's all their musical history from New Gold Dream to Don't You". Useless to underline the surprise and the pleasure of seeing them recalled in a totally still moment like this. I close with a curio from "Musica Di Repubblica" again of the 22nd last: On 28th May my fellow-countryman Piero Pelù met, in a strictly confidential way, Bob Clearmountain near Arezzo during a showcase for few friends built up to present his new album and to test some latest generation audio equipments. In this occasion Pelù's engineer, Lorenzo Tommasini availed himself of the famous American producer's experience. Mark Schulman

Thanks to Susan Trauten, our German friend and Simple Minds fan, we could get news about Mark Schulman (GNFTNW drummer). He's going on with his session work. After he took part in the Cher world tour "Believe", on 26th May he went to "Super Drumming", festival of big drummers that took place in Nonnweiler, Germany. The show started at 8 p.m. with some minor bands and went on with the performance of the German Jost Nickel, drummer of the singer Thomas D, and with the excellent Marco Minnemann's from H-Blockx. Then it was the turn of Mike Shapiro, teacher of LAMA, Los Angeles Music Academy. He also was drummer of Al Jarreau e Sergio Mendes. Mark Schulman, he as well teacher of the Los Angeles Music Academy, was the top-act of the evening. His brilliant performance lasted 35 minutes and was spaced out by an exchange of questions and answers between him and the audience. Hot end with a jam session that saw Mark playing along with Marco Minnemann and Mike Shapiro. The day after he held a drum clinic then had a lunch with all the drummers. Mark still is recalled with great love by Simple Minds fans, along with Malcom Foster who however he lost sight of therefore he knows nothing about him currently. Obviously he is no longer in touch either with Simple Minds after 1995. Susan closes her report with the greetings Mark gives to all Le Menti fan club. Many thanx to Mark and Susy!

The 'Ghost' album

Always and still no news about the new album, the "Ghost Album". I just called EMI and the news are the very same as the other European branches. They clearly said the album is ready but THEY DON'T KNOW when it'll be released, maybe at the end of summer. Actually the fact is either they don't want us to know. Now I think Simon's opinion is getting reliable when he says the Minds have already left Chrysalis/EMI (actually the deal was just for two albums) and they'll dedicate themselves to Mind Mood, their own label. Again according to Simon, EMI isn't interested in a quick release, seen our band is no longer exploitable, I add, but sooner or later they shall make up their mind. Shine On. Cris

Mel and Derek together (again)

Simon Cornwell received an email from Derek Forbes. A summary: Mel Gaynor and Derek Forbes will do a charity gig in Italy for the 'Terence Higgins Trust' with Sham 69. The band will include Mel Gaynor, Derek Forbes, Angela Capel, Graeme Clark and Neil Mitchell from Wet Wet Wet. Venue and date are unknown at this moment." [Source: Sjaak ]

Single and album - rumours...

EMI Deutchland: it seems that Kerr and Burchill definetly want to leave the current label to produce new material for their own label, la Mind Mood. Anyway next album will be out from Chrisalys - EMI. IT SEEMS that the first single, called"Space", is going to be out on june, 12; the album (no title yet) will be out on june, 28; there will be no tour, maybe in 2001, maybe there could be some promotional appearances or tv and radio specials. Nothing new about lineup (Forbes and Gaynor are definetly out, Taylor should be on keyboards).

'Band for the tribes' cover band

Dave Kelly, chitarrista della grande cover band 'Band for the tribes' che si è esibita alla convention londinese dell'estate scorsa, mi ha scritto: "With it being unlikely that there will be a convention this year. I was just wondering who would be interested in a Band For the Tribes gig in Germany? NOTHING has been planned yet, but we were intending to play Germany as a warm up gig for any convention. If we get enough people SERIOUSLY interested in this, then we could possibly ahead and arrange a date. We would of course try not to clash the date with any Simple Minds gig or Euro 2000, we could perhaps plan it around any German dates. I have completed about 20 new songs since the last convention and there is of course the new album to come. The proposed set would be - 2 hours and would only have 3 songs from the Camden Underworld set. Mick McNeil... (again)

Cristina wrote me: "Yesterday I received the commercial edition of McNeil's album, with autograph and dedication on both the CDs! Enclosed was a standard msg of his where he explains the financial effort they had to bear and their negligible profit margins, being their label independent and still very new, therefore he asks us not to copy "this CD, but to encourage people to purchase it for themselves, and so support MIX Records so that we may be able to bring you future releases of a similar standard without compromising the quality". Never I thought that McNeil, the charismatic and mysterious Simple Minds keyboardist, one day would talk to us as our like, never I imagined he'd apply to his audience like a beginner boy who needs our help. Mick thanks us and asks us for a favour and we can't do anything but exchange his kindness and consideration by meeting him, therefore Le Menti declares we will not give out any recording of his album."

The first review of millennium: Mick McNeil's solo album

Few words not to upset the surprise. I just say it's exactly what I expected from McNeil, maybe more: a double album absolutely phenomenal, the thousands somersets of a big of keyboards in all his power. There's a complete McNeil: the man of the Minds' golden times, then the new McNeil facing esperimental sounds but always with his inborn refinement coming from his classic background and that marked him since the early beginnings of his career, and the secret McNeil, meltingly and unsuspectedly tender, who plays just for himself but who humbly bows to your judgement and eagerly wait for it. After years of almost proud silence he found the courage to come out into the open, to bare himself. My judgement is wholly positive already from the artwork where soon it comes out McNeil's intimity. I'd say the whole album it's a diary with images, thoughts, feelings; a sea of feelings and emotions from a man with a lonely, introspective, maybe hard personality, but also capable of an extreme sweetness as we find in the first CD, inspired to the night, as we find in the pictures with his kids and as we find in the extremely melting poetry where he talks about a place he calls Mairi Beach. I can't say anything else, now the judgement passes onto you. Cris

How to get Mick McNeil's double cd.

Cristina received an email from MixMuzik relating to her question about the alternative way of obtaining the new album by Mick: 'an IMO is acceptable as long as it is made payable to 'MIX RECORDS' and the currency is in 'Pounds Sterling'. We are also accepting 'EuroCheques', again made payable with the details given above, this seems to be a popular way of paying as we have received many orders payed in this way from around Europe. The PO BOX address (we can accept credit card details through this as well, for those people not wishing to give their credit card details over the net) is: MIX RECORDS P.O. BOX 25098 Glasgow G3 7XL Scotland U.K. And the price of the album is £17.00 (for orders outside the U.K.) which also includes the cost of postage and packing. The Simple Minds singer has just bought two exclusive pounds 275,000 American loft-style flats at Todd Buildings in his home town. The Merchant City penthouse flats are a far cry from his childhood in the tenements of Toryglen. Kerr also recently bought a pounds 300,000 luxury two-bedroom apartment just yards from the new Scottish Parliament at Holyrood. A Bruce Findlay's colleague met Jim in London; he said that there isn't a title yet, but the band will be handing the new albun over to chrysalis sometime during this month or the beginning of next month. Check it out! 1/9/99 Cristina in Brindisi "If rain didn't stop them after half an hour it could be a storic gig; powerful music based on two guitars, bass and drums. Keyboards played just a secondary part. Can you imagine the hypnotic style of early Minds together with the energy made by Mel? Tracklist: Theme For Great Cities, 30 Frames, Changeling, Beautiful People - written by Dan and McVeigh, a beutiful black blues rock , fantastic!, Up On The Catwalk with Mel as singer with no voice, I Travel, Pleasantly Disturbed - played in a version near the original one, but more hypnotic and extremely sensual - their female singer's voice was great and her movements too, in a raining and sparkling sky. Then there was a break with Emiliana, the italian Bjork. Our heroes came back with Song For The Peace - a "simple" song dedicated to the event, supported by the nice percussionist's voice, then... the rain stopped everything! Dan did a good job on vocals, I really like him, but Kerr is still the best. Maybe that's the only problem for them, 'cause their music is great, as the soundcheck told us before the show. I just received a sad email from a friend of mine in which he told me about Mel & Derek gig. There was a long soundcheck; they played I travel, Beautiful people, Sweat in bullet and a great version of Up on the catwalk with Derek as singer and a great Mel, together with Ray McVeigh, ex Sex Pistols guitarist. From a musical point of view everyone agreed that this version was better than Minds one! The show: there were about 150 people(!) and an exagerated security staff! The concert began only at 8:15 pm, after a few guest stars. The lineup: Derek, Mel, Mel's son, Ray McVeigh, an unknown man on keyboards, two vocalist (one of them was Mel's daughter, really nice). They played only a few songs: Theme for great cities, Up on the catwalk, Changeling, 30 frames a second, Beautiful people, I travel and a new (no title...) song. The guys seemed to be happy, also when the keyboardist played When the spirits rise by bagpipe. 13/8/99 Brindisi concert! On Sunday, 8 I received another email by Roberto Caroppo, vice president of "In Aid of Worldwide Children's" commitee. I wasn't in Rome, so I can put it online only today (sorry!): "Dear Lachi, I send you the latest news taken from Mel's fax from London. Mel was already here in Brindisi to see concert's place and he should come back on august, 16. Rumours about Mel & Derek concert are confirmed; there will be a new lineup and old Simple Minds' material. It's possible that they write a new song dedicated to the event on sunday, 29." I received an email from the Cultural Office of Brindisi city (Italy) in which they say that after all burochratic difficulties about concert's place (it will be the comunal stadium at 99%) the event will take place on august, 29th; its name is "In Aid of worldwide children's" with Simple Minds, Repubblica, The Loft and some other artists. The purpose is to help children involved in the Balcan war, no matter of any ethnic division. Don't you think it's a great (confirmed) news?

Mel & Derek in Italy?

It's a lot of time that we hear rumours about the Mel/Derek duet, playing old SM songs together with a new lineup. It's better to find confirmation to these rumours, so I was silent til now. On the italian newspaper il Tempo (29/7) there's an interview with Mel, in which he speaks about the concert in Italy: "It doesn't seems that Mel left the band; from the article we can read that the Minds will play in Brindisi on 29/08/1999 (Palaelio?) and that the new album will be out in 2000; it seems also that they're working for a new song to play the day of the event and to a new website" Thanx David!

Steel Pulse

Do you remember Steel Pulse? Simple Minds supported this reggae band on their debut at Satellite City, Glasgow on January 17, 1978. Yesterday, 8.7.99 at Latisana (Udine, Italy), begun the Rototom Soundsplash Festival, an International Reggae Festival. Every night, a musical marathon til sunrise. Steel Pulse were on stage with a 10 musicians & dancers lineup. It was a great performance and the audience was enthusiastic. The festival will end on 12. 7. If you can, go and enjoy it! There are some information about the people who are working with Jim and Charlie on the new album. Chris Fudurich probably is the engineer; earlier he was assistant engineer and keyboard player on an album of Susanna Hoffs (ex Bangles) in 1996.

Although it is still in the stages of construction we hope in the near future to be adding a lot more to hit i.e. a live web-cam so you can see what is happening in the studio and a lot more recent pictures, audio files and video clips. At the moment Mick's main focus is original compositions and recordings for television and film soundtracks, but as always he has his own projects on the go as well. Mick has also started his own record label (MIX RECORDS), watch out for future releases!!!!

new single / new album

The movie "The Match" is going to be out on mid-July. Its soundtrack will contain "Hello", probably the new Simple Minds' single.
The latest news is that the album's going to be completed by mid-August. This means that its release is more likely going to be... from October 99 to January 2000!

Mark Kerr' band is called Sly Silver Sly; they're appreciated by Charlie, who produced two of their songs.

Kosovo concert

The set list was the following:
Waterfront - Someone, Somewhere (In Summertime) - Allive and Kicking - Don't You.
The performance was good, - that's what people present to the event said on the mailing list.
Bad news: on stage, with Jim and Charlie, this only musicians were Mark Taylor, Mark Kerr (the young Jim's brother) on drums and an unknown bass player. Mel and Derek were both there on stage earlier playing with various other people on a rendition of Led Zepplins Kashmir, in which Derek was on the unusual role of lead guitar, while Mel was spectacular on drums!

Glasgow, may 31!

Simple Minds will play the Glasgow SECC on 31st May along with other Scottish bands in aid of the Kosovo crisis.
Jim Kerr was quoted as saying: "This kind of concert has never been done in Scotland... it's taken this tragedy to pull it together. We will give our heart and soul to this event".
They should play 5 or 6 songs. Ticket price is £20 and you can phone to SECC boxoffice at: 0141 287 7777

Recently, someone posted to the mailing list great info about the new album; he confessed he was liar, so I think it's time for summarize what is true and what is not true:

- the list of demo titles (those that haven't appeared on simpleminds.com) was made up
- the producer of the new album is still unknown
- there is no single planned before the summer

We have to get confirmation about any news, always, 'cause our hearts are important!

a convention idea

Clive, one of the organizers, wrote to me: "The idea is to cover the whole wall with SM photos, and the only way I can see to do this is to have a series of pvc wallets, bonded together to form a massive "mural effect", so we can use this as a backdrop! Obviously, if it is too expensive, we won't be able to do it

Mel (again)

"I want to clear-up things: Mel has not left Simple Minds. I met the band (Jim & Charlie) in London E.M.I. office 10 days ago and they told me their plan to enter the studio in april in order to record their new album WITH THE HELP OF THEIR DRUMMER MEL GAYNOR.

About the new demos, I can say that they sound amazing, and there are at least a couple of strong singles which should do well into the charts. We hope the new lp will sell better than neapolis which was released when Chrysalis was still under reorganisation and SM had no real management (since the departure of Clive banks). And I must confess at the time we focused much more on Robbie Williams than on SM! Currently we are working on a new compilation called Simple Minds singles collection 79-99 containing every SM 7" single from 79 to present days. In order to promote it we plan to release either New Gold Dream or I travel in a remixed form. If we manage to clear-up things soon with our friends of Virgin rec., the compilation should be released around mid-april. The new studio album is still planned for september. That's about all.

- It seems that Mel has left again (no reasons are given yet). Brian Mcgee helped them demoeing and is supposed to be part to the new line-up. Derek is still there and Kevin Hunter has been recruited as a second guitarist (he will also do some backing vocals) As you know he has co-written 6 of the new tracks with Jim and Charlie.
- Proper recording will take place in Glasgow at Ca Va studios from early april to June. Steve Lipson will be producing with the help of Charlie and Peter walsh (who will mix the album).
- I don't have any information about Mick Macneil involvement but as the recording takes place in Glasgow, everything is possible. But seriously I doubt it...
- About a live album, at Chrysalis there is currently no plan to release one. So SM may release it through their own label MindsMood.
- finally, Yes they will tour the US at the end of the year : it's their only chance to have the new lp released there."

Yes, I have been working on the new Simple Minds record up in Glasgow with Jim and Charlie. We have about 15 new songs that I think are really good. I have wanted to play music with them for years and they were kind enough to let me sit in on their writing sessions. As of right now we are planning to record the record at Jims house near a loch in Scotland in April and May."

13/1/99 : From Dave Kelly, A.K.A. Immaculate Friend:
I have volunteered to form a tribute band for a one-off performance at the Simple Minds convention. So over the next few I will be asking for possible band members. I play keyboards and guitar but would prefer to be "The Man in the Sky". That means I'm looking for a drummer, bass, guitar and of course and budding Jim Kerr.
This is a serious announcement for serious musicians as you will be playing in front of Minds fans and you will need your own instruments annd P.A. Ideally I would like to choose from the Manchester and North West England area. I will be advertising this locally as well. This makes sense for rehersal reasons. Unless there is a good way of communicating, after all this is the age of Technology. If anyone has the energy then please E-mail me!
