SAVANT - THE DAWNING
An appropriate name of an album for a band just issuing their debut
release. Savant have a great sound which is a little reminiscent of a cross
between Kiss & Metallica around their Black album.
Some fairly obvious gothic overtones foreshadow the various songs here,
particularly evident in titles like "The More I Die", "Prayer" & my
personal pick from the 8 tracks here, "The Fordbidden One".
Although the opening track "Once Was" seems a little nervous, the rest of
the albums show up as very competent metal of the Metallica ilk, grandiose
riffs punctuated by a fairly hard bassline at times, especially on the
finale of the longer tracks in the tradition of great metal bands.
This is yet another interesting look at a genre that too many critics have
tried to pronounce dead & failed miserably. It's only through bands with
the urge of Savant that metal has & will continue to survive. Nice one guys.
