My Analysis of Tori Amos's "Tear In Your Hand"
This song really means a lot to me because I can relate to it remarkably well, especially since I'm
currently going through a situation very similar to the one described in this song, and it really helps me deal with it.
All the world just stopped now
So you say you don't wanna stay together anymore
Let me take a deep breath babe
If you need me, me and neil'll be hangin' out with the DREAM KING
Neil says hi by the way
I don't believe you're leaving cause me and Charles Manson like the same ice cream
I think it's that girl
And I think there're pieces of me you've never seen
Maybe she's just pieces of me you've never seen well
It seems as though her world has come to an end, and she can't possibly go on with her life since
the guy no longer wants to be a part of it. But, she has to try and make it with a smile, so he
doesn't think that she's some helpless little thing, which she definitely isn't. She finds comfort
in another guy, a very close friend of hers, in fact, whom she is able to tell everything to,
including what had happened in the relationship. So shen she says that Neil says hi, she doesn't
just mean it literally. She's also trying to say that she told her friend everything about him, and
her friend knows all about him now, like a sort of threat perhaps. She doesn't think he's leaving
her because of her idiosyncracies or her darker side; he's always accepted them before. He's
with another girl now whom he thinks has something new to offer to him, but she doesn't. Tori
is well aware of this, the fact that the guy might not have seenevery single facet of her dynamic self.
All the world is all I am
The black of the blackest ocean and that tear in your hand
All the world is DANGLIN'... danglin'... danglin' for me DARLIN'
You don't know the power that you have with that tear in your hand
Tear in your hand
Tori is well aware that she truly is a dynamic person, that she is fully capable of the full range of
emotions and whatever, from wildly passionate and frantic to tender, calm, and loving. She feels
as though her world is coming apart at the seams, that life is no longer worth living without him,
and he was the glue that held it all together. She feels as though she can't go on because they
were so close, and she misses him so much. She still wants to be with him at this point, and what
makes it so much harder is that he still does care for her even though she may not be his one and
only any longer.
Maybe I ain't used to
Maybes smashing in a cold room
Cutting my hands up every time I touch you
Maybe maybe it's time to wave goodbye now
Time to wave goodbye now
At one time, she truly thought it would be possible that they would stay together, that they were
meant for each other. She still can't even begin to fathom what could have gone wrong in their
relationship, be it something she did or otherwise. She's watching helplessly as her dreams are
stripped from her as she looks on powerless. She is not used to something going so wrong
without an explanation, and here, there is no definite explanation. So, throughout this song, she
is theorizing the only possible reason he could have left. Now, it hurts so bad to be around him
because it just reminds her of what could have been. They are both very uncomfortable around
each other at this point because neither of them knows how to act, and it puts them into a sort of "cold room" because they're so estranged from each other now. Also, he is putting up a wall to
her, probably not intentionally, but he doesn't want to hurt her anymore, even though he is every
moment. Likewise, she's putting up a wall to him because she doesn't want to get hurt anymore
and she still has some feelings for him. After some time has passed, she realizes that it's silly to
have feelings for someone who doesn't feel the same way, to long for something that is no longer
likely to happen, so she hesitantly decides to let it go.
Caught a ride with the moon
I know I know you well
Well better than I used to
HAZE all clouded up my mind
In the daze of the why it could've never been
So you say and I say you know you're full of wish
And your "baby baby baby babies"
I tell you there're pieces of me you've never seen
Maybe she's just pieces of me you've never seen well...
"Time is a healer of all wounds." This last part fully displays that. I am in total agreement with
the other person who said that the music stopping here also signifies a new beginning for her.
One can tell just from the words themselves that she is a new person and even the music itself
sounds more strong and confident here. After even more time has plassed, time to heal, time to
think over things, time to look back on all that had happened between them until now, she can
look back and see everything more clearly now. Since she had removed herself from the
situation, she has started to see parts of him that were always there but she had been blind to.
There was a time, she thought, that they were perfect for each other, that he was the perfect guy,
but now all the clouds have cleared and she has started to see him in a new light. She realized
now that there are parts of her that he just couldn't appreciate, and there are partss of him that she
sees that would have made him intolerable to her. He ended up falling for some girl with qualities that Tori already had but the guy neglected to see if because he really was a flake,
just like the girl that he fell for. And yes, Tori even had some of these qualities as well, but she
had tucked them away herself because she thought it would have been pointless for her to display
them, since she thought of them as negative anyway. To this day, he still believes that he didn't
do anything wrong and believes he's perfectly innocent, even though he is all for remaining
"very good friends." At this point, she doesn't even really care anymore because she now
realizes that she's better off without him.
