This brings to mind Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love", not a
concept album, but it has a concept "section", I guess. The
second side begins with 3 songs in a row that (IMO) form a
continuous piece, the first song is about falling asleep,
the second about dreaming, and the third about waking up....
("And Dream of Sheep", "Under Ice" and "Waking the Witch"
respectively).

I'm afraid to create a new thread, but at least for me Rush is Prog.
Maybe initially Rush was more like a Hard Rock Band but since
"2112" they have progged IMHO.

Now this is what I like. Someone who takes me seriously when I say 'Spread
the word!' LOL!!! Well, other than the entire part 3 that Claudio quoted,
parts one and two of the newsletter had info on new artist members Glass
Hammer, Par Lindh Project, Quarkspace and the French progressive super
label, Musea!

The newsletter also includes info on forthcoming releases from Cuneiform.
And in September One Way will be reissuing:

HAPPY THE MAN!!!! Yup, these are the reissues you've all been waiting for,
the two Happy the Man albums originally released on Arista - Crafty Hands
and Happy the Man!

Also, new releases from Adrian Belew, The Irresponsibles, Ian McDonald, King
Crimson, Caravan and a new issue of Progression Magazine. It also includes
tour dates for Bon, Roger Eno and Lol Hammond, and Roedelius. And for as
many imports as you saw in Claudio's forward, he didn't get them all. So if
you want to check out all this info, you'll find the newsletter in its
entirety at . Enjoy!

yes, thats just the shite eh!...which brings me to a recently acquired
video that I dont believe has been mentioned here,I know there are many KC
fans on this list and this surprises me...KC LIVE IN JAPAN '95,its
everything a video should be [IMO],first and foremost excellent
sound, especially if you have a surround sound system, the camera's go where
they are supposed to,you always know who's playing...sometimes a surprise,I
always thought it was the other guy! Adrian Belew plays the mellotron parts
on his guitar in "Dinosaur",that was a shock!...now I can believe "Guitar

I believe its on DVD too..

#1. Never be afraid to create a new thread.
#2. Rush is Prog. Well, sometimes, but never for an entire album. I love
Rush, have all their work, most digitally remasters which actually sound
BETTER than the vinyl (there's a rarity) so I think I know what I'm talking
about.

Cerebrally (sp) as a popular rock band they kick everyone else's collective
ass. Peart's lyrics and drumming, Alex Lifeson's guitar (the most unheralded
guitarist ever) and Geddy Lee's bass, keyboards and squealing (sorry, after
all these years his voice still grates on me every once in awhile) make them
the best trio going.

Yes, they can write some prog concept pieces but they're also very adept at
writing radio-friendly things that are clearly mainstream, which explains
their 20+ year success. They tend to "craft" their songs with care then
polish them with great production. The results are clean, interesting and
ultimately repeatable, at least for me. I tend to like the later works, say
"Moving Pictures" and beyond, though I was a little disappointed with 93's
"Counterparts", but 96's "Test For Echo" brought me back. Seems they're
about due for a new one...

So, yeah. There's a lot of rock bands that aren't "prog" that I like. Who'd
like to take up a Killing Joke thread?

Thanks, Daniel for the memo. I watched it tonight, but it was only a 5

I agree with you on Rush, although their prog stuff is few and far
between. As for Killing Joke ... not prog, but I like their first album
and "Millennium". "Democracy" is interesting, but drags a bit and lacks
the punch of it's predecessor.

Now, some Giant! I purchased the CD of their first release today. My
vinyl sounds better than the CD, and selected cuts taken from it and
included on the import "Giant Steps" are superior to the initial LP
package. While I'm on "Giant Steps", does anyone else feel as I do --
that the cut "Power and the Glory" rocks harder on "Giant Steps"? I do
prefer "Acquiring the Taste" over this one, but it's Giant and it brings
warm memories. It is aggravating that the US release of Three Friends
shares it's cover.

Definitely not prog, but who cares? This is some of the best hard, post-punk
rock music ever made. 1st s/t LP is the best! I could listen to "Requiem"
all day. "Democracy" is truly only for die-hard fans, but the previous CD
was "Pandemonium", not "Millennium". And here I thought you were a real fan...

Their best is "Brighter Than a Thousand Suns". I have to play this one every
week (never saw the CD so I taped the vinyl before I wore it to shreds) or I
start twitching. Democracy was from 96, what have they done recently?
Anything? What are Jaz, Raven, Big Paul and, especially, Geordie doing now???
(No Star Trek jokes, please. Geordie influenced a whole generation of
guitarists/bands including Metallica et.al.)

Ever hear Jaz Coleman & Anne Dudley's "Songs From the Victorious City"
(1991)?? A Middle Eastern extravaganza!!

great location. The rates are $119 single, $159 double, and $165 for a

I called my travel agent for some help in finding a place...I asked her
to look for a place with 'conference' facilities and, of course, a

The technique is called Sample & Hold.
Before, things were more complicated for Keith. Composing involved keeping the
parrot in a listening booth in the local classical record store for days during
the initial stages of the composition process.

It was about time someone put it that bluntly. Since joining O-R, I don't
feel
like a boring old (39) fart anymore about still loving a nice-sounding
guitar

I agree totally but you might also add that it is a matter of degrees. I've
gotten up on my cyber podium a handfull of times talking about various
acoustic, especially fingerstyle, guitarists. No technological bells and
whistles there folks. What you hear is the guitar player. Period. You want
depth of expression listen to those glissandos and vibratos on a good
recording, or a bottleneck. How about Michael Hedges neck tapping or
Preston Reed's percussive rapping on the top of his box? Hell, a good mike
just placed close to a good guitar will pick up the most gorgeous tones....
If we're going to talk about guitar sounds, comparing an electric to an
acoustic might be like comparing a chain saw to a Dozuki (Japanese crosscut
saw for fine woodworking). That all said, it is clearly a matter of types
of sound. One size does not fit all and there are plenty of places
(probably most, insofar as "our" types of music are concerned?) where the
electric, effects added or not, is the instrument you want.

I discovered KJ years ago, during the grunge movement in Seattle. I lived
up there. A friend of mine, Daniel House (From Skin Yard, and now runs CZ
Records) passed me a compilation tape with Killing Joke (cuts from the 1st
album) on it. I liked it! Subsequently, I bought "Extremes ...", and
enjoyed the "...Termite Mound" about the best on that one. "What's This
For" was a disappointment. I will pick up the one you suggested. To put
Daniel House into perspective, he helped produce bands like "Coffin
Break". The only time I ever shocked him was when I announced that I
enjoyed "Happy Flowers" stuff. I like nearly 70% of the stuff KCMU was
playing at that time. I also discovered Jesse Bernstein and Willian S.
Burrough's spoken word around then. Henry Rollins spoken word stuff is
great as well. That should give you an idea of where I was introduced to
KJ. For the record ... I frequently requested Gesntle Giant stuff to be
played on KCMU. Eventually, they did play something from "Interveiw".
For me, all roads lead to Gentle Giant.

I've taped the show from last night. Review to come. Keep in mind that I
have always held Gentle Giant, ELP, Tull, Yes, KC, and the like, as my
favorites ... even though I am fairly eclectic. I will most likely give
Kieth a break. Also for the record, and just to bitch, I HATE THE NEW
TECHNO RAP HIPPHOP DISCO CRAP. My eclecticity has some boundaries! MY
teenage son drives me crazy with that stuff. I don't put his stuff down
in front of him, because he reminds me too much of me when I was his age.
We do agree on "Ministry" ... I like the mix of Industrial and Metal. I
like the true industrial stuff that came out around the time grunge hit.
Generally just interesting noise.

Go ahead ya'll! Fire away! HA HA! A sword lads!!!!!
