Great Thak! Someone slap me conscious! The world IS coming to an end?
This I thought I'd NEVER see. Next, I might witness a tour with Wakeman,
Emerson, and Fripp! It happened with Johnson, Satriani, and Vai ... so
anything is possible. By the way, I went to see the above named concert
here in Portland. It was OK, but I actually went to see Robert. What
class! Fripp came out while people were seating BEFORE the concert, and
sat down to play "Soundscapes". Man, I loved it. After his turn on
stage, he quietly picked up his guitar and casually went behind the stacks
to watch the audience and roadies for a while ... then disappeared. I
stayed for Vai, but then left. Nothing mattered after the man left the
stage. FRIPP! FRIPP! FRIPP!

I would have to say that the true antithesis of progressive rock would be
the unbeatable Happy Flowers. Am I wrong? I don't think so . . . and
yet, I enjoy them. They've penned (pen?) such classics as "I don't need
another enema", "Let's eat the baby like my gerbils did", "Unhappy meal",
"Stop touching my food", "Finger in my Cracker Jacks", "My Evil Twin", "I
Said I Wanna Watch Cartoons", "Charlie Got a Haircut", and a lot more
greats we all remember from childhood. They are the only group that makes
me laugh anymore. I guess I'm jaded or something. For a noise band, they
are the real deal. Never say I neglected to suggest fine listening
entertainment to all of you conosuers.

Oh, dear me, I've gone and misrepresented myself again. No, I wasn't miffed.
Alas, I will have to admit to myself what I've really known was true -- that
there are overdubs galore on OOTW and PTF. I was clinging to the idea that my
boys were truly superhuman ... I know there were ways of emulating a "stereo
chorus" for a vocal track, even in the early 70's, and I was ready to assert
that all of the vocals in the a cappella fugue of the OOTW version of "On
Reflection" had been chorused, even though it's obvious that Derek's, at
least, were doubled. On "Knots", though, I am still not sure ... could be,
or not.
One of the Beatles' engineers -- I lent my Ultimate Recording Sessions (Mark
Lewisohn) to someone, and I can't remember the engineer's name -- not Geoff
Emerick -- invented a device for "doubling" a vocal track that was the first
to be called a "flanger" (Lennon's title). Though it worked on roughly the
same principle of splitting the signal in tow and slowing down half, the
effect was much closer to that of a chorus than the out-of-phase effect of
the flangers of today. I had hoped that the BBC studios had some early
"choruses" at their disposal with which to make Derek's vocals "ring" so ...
Well, at least I converted a friend of mine to the worship of Gentle Giant by
giving him a tape of OOTW as he embarked upon a long drive, and telling him
it was all live in the studio. Hell, he didn't know there were only 4 guys
... blew his mind.
Here's a question: are any of the recorder tracks overdubbed in the interlude
in "Knots"?
And another: who can remember the Beatles' engineer who invented what John
Lennon called "the flangy thing"?

Hi All
I was wondering if any one else has ever heard of Roger Waters
"Music From The Body"
I was on holiday in the USA a few years ago and at the time was in to
anything relating to Pink Floyd. I had discovered that R Waters had a
CD that he had released called "Music From The Body". Well having a lot of material
by Floyd already I was desperate to get hold of this and when I found it I thought I was the luckiest
person alive. That was until I got back to Australia and heard it.
It was terrible!!!!. Anyone else get burnt by this CD or similar.

Oh yes, the stick. Just remembered that the first time I heard it was Levin on
"Discipline" (was that the first record it was used on?). I was flabbergasted
(how I love that word!). And when I saw KC live on that '81 tour - it was the
first gig at the small place in Aylesbury where KC, Genesis, Bowie, etc. used to
warm up for their tours - it knocked me out.
re: bass: I have to say that there are great bass guitarist. HOWEVER: I think
that it's not always the complicated-ness of the bass line that makes it great.
If it fits with the music, it might be easy, yet the greatest bass line in the
world (some examples? bass line on the Who's "The Real Me" and on Camel's
"Echoes". Especially the latter fits brilliantly into the song...thus: great
bass line!)

As I re-invigourate all my flabby prog muscles, I have dusted off some old
UK cassettes and gave 'em a listen. I really don't know much detail about
the band, and would appreciate someone recommending a decent FAQ, if such a
thing exists.
UK seems to me rather like Cream, a band assembled from the virtuosi of
prog. I forgot how much I really loved this band, until I joined this list.
A back-handed thank you to all of you.

I agree with you, Don. And what's more, on my old vinyl copy of
that album, Janacek IS actually credited! That led me to pick up
the original version which is to a large extent identical to the
ELP version. And funny enough I think the ELP version works better
that the original.
Also, that Ginastera Toccata was made with the composers full consent.
He was actually honoured that Emerson would make his piece, and liked
the result.

Which is why Americans are still called "Yanks". Not to mention Yankshire...which is NOT the home of Geordies. Though, mind you, it does produce some interesting language...
And wow, the shudder produced by the thought of Derek singing Close to the Edge is nothing short of..., umm...hey, I don't know. What a weird thought...
