You've abbandoned it?

Blame the music press for years of posturing, they've done a good job
of placing music into pigeon-holes over the years and then it is a
very easy step to imply that if its #### it must be worthy but if it
falls under the @@@@ banner it must be crap.

I personally quite like @@@@.

We all do the same kind of thing, to some degree, but the media re-
inforces these prejudices, I believe.

If you're a GG fan you're "supposed" to like Jethro Tull; Yes;
Anglagard; Echolyn; and so on, the thing is we mostly _do_ appreciate
the above bands but we're entitled to sink our jaws into other music
that is barely (if at all) related to GG.

If anyone implies I shouldn't like something, I'll pay attention to
their reasoning but I'm going to continue, for the sake of an example,
to like some music by Sparks and accept it for what it offers - quirky,
smart-ass pop music.

I'm not heavily into Sky but I _can_ enjoy them.
Even though the musicians are operating well within themselves, and at
times the music is more about atmosphere/mood than about fireworks or
breaking much new ground, it _does_ connect with me; factors like these
should surely be no barrier to enjoyment?

Another example: rock fans' resistance to e-music (J M Jarre etcetera);
and another: jazz fans' disdain for nearly all rock music! Maybe I can
also throw in the way that traditional folk-music devotees (some of
them, anyway) turn their noses up at anything with a remotely modern
sound.

And we can all make our own minds up, Jerry, and not worry about some
of the negative attitudes on display!

It must be more common and acceptable for Europeans to still be into prog. It's
largely regarded as "dinosaur music" in the States.

Sad little album. Great cut listing, but with the speed all messed up like that,
I'm only keeping it for the sake of not having a hole in my archive (be nice,

I have one video (only one number) of them live. they're ok, at times
brilliant. They appear to have about a zillion albums out. Heavy early
Genesis influence. To further complicate matters, there's some bubble gum
band that also goes by the name Cast.
Since I've only heard odd cuts, I can't make specific recommendations.
My sense from the stuff I've seen and heard and from the numerous reviews

BTW, I think the new Tull album is a winner! Ian has written these songs with

Actually, all of his work up til the time he hit the wrong number on the

albums buried his guitar further back in the mix, or nixed it altogether.
Nice slide work on VI, and "Hit by Varese" on V has nice punch and fast

Subject: gg: nuthernoo

Hello GG fans- I have been silently participating in this list for about a
week but this is my first contribution. I am 25 years old and have been a
GG fan since I bought TPatG a year ago. Now I have GG through Interview
(except for Free Hand- My friend has the One Way release but I am waiting
to get a better copy).

Roger Dean introduced me to GG- atleast indirectly. I was attracted to
some of the album covers of some obscure group which I had seen at the
local music store (not the cover of GFtO mind you). I investigated and
discovered that most of the music was really good too. But to make a long
story short I became a fan of what Yes did during their Progressive era
(not having heard of Progressive Rock before) and have discovered other
such groups via them, such as my other two favorites, GG and Renaissance.
These three groups are supposedly the same type of music and yet are so
completely differant- there is even so much diversity within the groups
themselves. That's one thing I love about them.

My most recent purchase: Out of the Woods- What a great buy!!! I dig the
alternate versions.

My next two GG purchases: Under Construction and Playing the Fool

My luckiest purchase: In a Glass House- on CD (Terrapin Trucking). I
found it at the mall of all places!

My favorite album: I can't decide. AtT, Octopus or TPatG.

My favorite song: Tough choice here also. Some include Pantagruel's
Nativity, Wreck, The Moon is Down, Three Friends, The Advent of Panurge,
Think of Me With Kindness (Gotta' love any song with a Mellophone solo!),
In a Glass House, Aspirations, Cogs in Cogs, His Last Voyage and Another
Show.

It's great to hear from other GG fans- the only others I know are one's
I've introduced them to myself. I just have one favor to ask. Just a tiny
favor. Won't take much on your part...uh...I was just wondering if you
could move the...eh...if you could move the GG convention a little closer
to Utah. Thanks guys, you're the greatest,

From: Gary Davis
Subject: gg: IRC chat and new Keneally

Hi, folks:

The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety
at . Here are some excerpts you may
appreciate.

As fall approaches, it's time to get back to doing IRC Chats
. James La Brie, vocalist for Dream Theater
and his recent solo project, Mullmuzzler, will be joining The Artist Shop
and Talk City on Wednesday, September 8 at 9pm eastern/6pm pacific.
Inspired by his father, James started singing and playing drums at age 5.
By the age of ten, he was performing in a barber shop quartet with his
father, uncle and brother. Yet James' real love was rock music which he
pursued by his early teens. At age 21, he began vocal training with the
renowned vocal coach Rosemary Patricia Burns. After working with several
Canadian bands, James became the vocalist for Winter Rose, which almost
signed with Atlantic Records. Then Pierre Paradis, who managed the band Voi
Vod, approached James regarding a solo project with Aquarius Records. He
also told James about a New York based band called Dream Theater who were
looking for a vocalist. The rest, as they say, is history.

James will join us to discuss his latest project, Mullmuzzler, slated to be
released on Magna Carta in late August.
With the help of the venerable Terry Brown, producer of Rush's output during
the '70's, James built, shaped, then fine-tuned nine distinct, heartfelt and
often bombastic tracks, all of them co-writes with an army of the field's
hottest creators including members of Shadow Gallery, Matt Guillory of
Dali's Dilemma, and Trent Gardner from Magellan and Exploreres Club. So the
writers planted the seed and the players made it grow. Towards that end,
Jame tapped co-writer and keyboardist Matt Guillory, scary Zappa-orbiting
guitarist Mike Keneally and his gravity-defying bassist from Beer for
Dolphins, Bryan Beller, plus Mike Mangini (best known for his work with
Extreme and Steve Vai) for a little musical witchery down in LA. The result
is a banquet of purifying rock, some of it slamming in a Zeppelin frame of
mind, some of it reminiscent of Queen and possibly Styx, some of it simply
the most elegant classic rock you will ever hear. And, hopefully, James
will also share with us the progress being made on the forthcoming Dream
Theater album!

On our Mike Keneally/Immune page we have
a forthcoming release from Mike Keneally!!! Mike's seventh album,
Nonkertompf, is an instrumental effort featuring Keneally playing
everything, including guitars, keyboards, drums, sax, a stool and about a
dozen other devices. It's a 74-minute stream-of-consciousness
flight-of-fancy that takes the listener on an unparallelled sonic journey.
Countless styles and moods are explored and seamlessly sewn together, always
with extraordinary musical precision, rich orchestrational sense and a very
big heart. After two successful U.S tours of his own in 1998, Keneally is
set to embark on a worldwide tour with Steve Vai, during which he'll be
aggressively promoting Nonkertompf on each stop of the journey. Nonkertompf
is Mike's very first release on his own brand new label, Exowax!

Also on our Immune page you'll find gigs for Mike Keneally and Beer for
Dolphins:

Pity, you could have sent one of your wives out to buy some if they did.

I haven't heard them myself but I went out for a drink the other night with
Jesus Tapia who is from Mexico and is very familiar with this band. He has
seen them live also.

BTW, can this boy eat chilli's! :-o

Yeah @@@@ is where it's at. I think #### only sounds good after some hash.
(US peeps won't get this, let's just say at 4 pounds it's heavy music)

>We all do the same kind of thing, to some degree, but the media re-

The people who work in the media must have got it from somewhere. It's
cyclic.

That's probably why I gave it away. There was some nice stuff there but too
'nice' in places and it didn't rip my balls off like say another I recently
revisited from the same period: Romantic Warrior by Return to Forever.

>And we can all make our own minds up, Jerry, and not worry about some

Actually emotion and someone else's enthusiasm can often be the guiding
factor in buying a particular artist's work. Like "They played this music at
the dance when I first met Mary" or "My pal is an absolute @@@@ nut. He has
all their albums and jumps up and down when he hears them. I've subsequently
bought some of their stuff too as it puts a smile on my face" Conversely
"that '*>= band was always on the radio when I had that -+/*"! job at the
factory" or a dj intimating that to like #### type of music is a bit wanky
makes you feel like you are untrendy or isolated by liking the genre or
artist.
The thing is it's often done so subtlely you are unaware of it's effect. You
can often hear people proffering aquired attitudes in a sort of 'invasion of
the body snatchers' way.

I saw the Power show. The local radio had a contest and about 100 won a
chance to sit onstage. They set up some bleachers in a semicircle on the
rear of the stage and gave the contest winners big flashlights which
were incorporated into the light show. Excellent show. Any others see
it?. Ez

For 2 years I had the misfortune of living in Wichita, Kansas. One of the
few bright spots was seeing Kansas with Steve Morse on the Power tour.
