Hey All:

    Okay all you lucky California GG fanatics:  was any one lucky enough to
catch the Zappa Tribute "Banned From Utopia" on August 27th?  I happened
across this clip on CNN today and wondered if anyone saw the show.  Of
course, if you did, I'm ( and I am sure others ) are extremely jealous!
Any news if you did would be appreciated.  Article below:

Zappa Returns to Life in Utopia

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Musical iconoclast Frank Zappa took as his motto the
Edgard Varese quotation, "The present-day composer
refuses to die!" Now many of the revolving cast of characters that
comprised Zappa's touring and recording bands have seen to it that
this late great musician's output -- a massive body of uncategorizable work
that radio and retail had little idea what to do with --
continues to be heard by those who will listen, at least in a live context. 

A loose, motley looking bunch onstage (group coalesced for a Zappa tribute
in Germany in 1995), all are consummate, in-demand
players -- having been put through their paces by Zappa himself and wearing
it like a badge of honor. Each would have his moment to
show off during the first of four capacity weekend shows. 

But possessed solos in particular from Kurt McGettrick -- whose weathered
baritone sax nearly outweighed him -- and guitarist Mike
Miller practically brought down the roof on the tightly configured venue.
(Miller couldn't exactly fit onstage with the other musicians,
and Arthur Barrow, ably filling in for bassist Tom Fowler who's touring
with Ray Charles in Europe, knocked over drummer Ralph
Humphrey's music sheet reading light early on adjusting to the cramped
quarters.) 

But read Zappa's complicated charts they did, what with their bewildering
melange of tones, tempos and styles -- often within a mere
musical passage of one song. Smiles and hoots were in abundance from the
predominantly male Zappa-tistas in the audience in instant
recognition of such fan faves as "Inca Roads," "Peaches en Regalia,"
"Montana" and an encore of "Zombie Woof," all among Zappa's
more melodically friendly fusion fare. 

The sound was quite extraordinary, given a nine-piece electric ensemble
with brass was squeezed into a stage and seating area the size
of an extra-large living room. Venue, opened in January, is run by the son
of Don Randi, owner of the original jazz club in Studio City
since 1970, and offers some welcome booking competition to Catalina and the
Jazz Bakery. 

And while Zappa's unique ringmaster stage persona and musicianship were
sorely missed -- much less his own satirical potshots at
politics and religion (some comical references to candidate George W. Bush
were offered up in the spirit), Banned From Utopia is vital
living proof that his compositional efforts will not soon be forgotten.

But it did change ..... for the worse ...... because they didn't make it
big, but tried to.
If they had made it big with the best music they made, they might have
kept to the formula. And we might have been spared for "Giant For A Day".

Quebec is a melting pot for "Musique Progressif". Going back a bit, the '70s

the intricate stuff. In the '80s, Quebec had *progressive* artists such as 
THE BOX, MEN WITHOUT HATS, MIRIODOR & VOIVOD. While most of the '80s bands 
listed above weren't your run of the mill standard prog.(except for 
Miriodor), they did record music that was *progressive*, and most of them 
listed prog rock as a major influence on them, in particular Voivod & Men 
Without Hats...who have mentioned Van Der Graaf Generator in 
interviews...and in the case of Men Without Hats, named a song after VDGG 
called "Van Der Graaf Generation Blues". :)

(C)Well, I guess that's a possibility (making it 'big' with the GG sound), 
(i)but I really doubt it. Also, my 'sig' was intended as part of my text.

(L)tomato-dog)...and, I think, for the worse. Very possibly much worse

Sax, Clarinet, Flute, and a barely passeable oboe, and Bass (same old story)  
although I haven't picked up any of those in a few years.  Lately, I have

   I have not seen mentioned in the list the band CONVENTUM, which I
personally like very much.
   They recorded two albums (the names escapes my memory at this time)
that I know of.
 This band had Rene Lussier and Andre Duchesne, two fine guitarists
that went on after Conventum as solo recording and performing artistes
and also did colaborations with some other musicians. Since I don't
know much about the band itself, I would like to ask one of our
Quebecois friends to tell us more about this band.

Wow! I can't see how anyone couldn't be overwhelmingly impressed. When I 
first heard it back in 1991 after a few puffs of that Chatham-Kent 
homegrown, I was completely blown away. I have never heard anything like it 
since. Personally, I find "AtT" the pinnacle of Prog. Rock. Everything else 
known as a *classic*("In The Court Of", "Dark Side Of The...") is 2nd rate 
compared to "AtT", IMHO of course. I get chills everytime I hear "AtT". It 
changed my music listening habits for the rest of my life. The only other 
record which changed my music listening habits since, was Bark Psychosis' 
"Hex"(and "Low Flying Aircraft" by TIPPETT, JUHN, MAURER & CROSS which 
turned me on to Avant Garde Jazz, and Caravan's "In The Land of Grey and 
Pink" which turned me on to the Canterbury scene). Anyway, Bark Psychosis' 
"Hex" turned me on to other bands such as Durutti Column, Dif Juz, 
early-Level 42, later-Talk Talk, A.R. Kane(early stuff produced by Ray 
Shulman), Disco Inferno & Seefeel. I'm just waiting for another record like 
that to come along(AtT & Hex). Hopefully soon, because I'm getting bored 
with new music these days.

I might be broadcasting a radio programme on the Internet this Saturday, 
Sept. 4th at 6am-9am(Eastern Standard), on CJAM 91.5 FM. This is kind of 
cool because if you're in Europe, you can listen to me on the Internet at 
about 11am or 12-noon.

I will also be starting a once-a-week programme. Time-slot is yet unknown. I 
will keep you informed.

I need some Renaissance info. I own 3 Renaissance recordings. They are :

"Turn Of The Cards"(my favourite)
"Scheherazade & Other Stories"
         &
"Novella"

Should I buy the follow up to "Novella" called "Songs For All Seasons"? I 
heard the sound was pointing the way to the decline of Renaissance...is this 
true or is it as good as the ones above?

(D)This is EXACTLY how I feel about music these daze with the exception of 
(E)a few 'pop' pieces and several 'serious' worx. If you or anyone else is 
(J)bored with what they are hearing musically, check out the music of Bernd 
(D)Alois Zimmerman. Though he's been dead for a while, his music is so far 
(E)ahead of its time that people will probably be singing Webern before they 
(J)even start listening to Z! Ah, W's dream come true... 

(D)...of course, you may not like Z's music (I can sugg other examples), 
(J)but you certainly won't be bored - if you listen attentively.

First.  Any release date on the new yes album and any hint if it will be
as bad as
open your eyes.
Second. Got the new tull friday. Tull is is only band before GG on  my
list. Anyway I like it except for Mango Flush which should have been an
instrumental and not be reprised. I also do not care for dot com but it
isnt awful.  The album does rock at many points but RTB is still far
superior in my book.  Here's hoping this is'nt the last tull album.
To my mind anything after under wraps has been gravy. I cannot see them
waiting another five years to do an album.  Next out Ian's solo album in
February 2000.

Happy the Man out next tuesday on one way

I haven't listened to it in a while but that is the impression I had when it
came out. I liked L too but it seemed more commercial to me. I think the two
covers, Hurdy Gurdy man and It's all too much fit in my pop song catagory
and so does elektric gypsies. It has a singalong chorus. Om Nama shivaya may
sound quasi mystical but it too is a great singalong number. I live in an
area populated by ethnic Indians and I could easily imagine this coming out
of one of their car windows along with all the Bollywood film hits. Even
with Lunar Music suite and HG gliss I think the album is a lot more
commercial or was, than FR. Surely you remember Biff that it was still
trendy to wear long hair, be interested in eastern religions and sit in the
middle of the floor at parties chanting "OM" when L came out. Just!

20th September in Europe, 28th in the US.

It is a superb album. It captures something of Yes from every decade - 60's, 
70's, 80's and 90's. BTW, I like Open Your Eyes (but then I'm a complete Yes 
nut.) I'll let you away with your comment........this time! ;-)

September 28 in the US.

There has been alot of talk about this album on Southside, a Yes discussion
group.  Evidently some of the folks have come by pre=release copies of the
disc and have been reporting that it is far better (in their opinion) that
OYE.

Tower records has a Liquid Audio download of one of the songs you can
enjoy, "Lightening Strikes".  Just go to their site and do a search for
Yes.  You should find it.

it is _not_ as good as the ones above, but it is not as _bad_ as the ones
that came after (although even "Azure d'Or" still has acouple of good songs,
the two 80s albums have no socially redeeming values whatsoever - even worse
than GfaD).   it could (imo) be compared to "wind & wurthering" in that in
retrospect, the seeds of their destruction are being sown (with the
inclusion of some clearly "pop" tunes) but at the time it really didn't seem
_all_ that bad.
i would say that if you really want some more R, the one you _should_ get is
"Live at Carnagie Hall" (or if that's no longer readilily available the King
Biscuit discs are a perfectly acceptable substitute - although still 2nd
choice.).

My feeling is that "Novella" was the beginning (or the middle) of the end.  
Stay away from "Song ..."  turn around and go the other way.  "Turn of the 
Cards" came out after "Ashes" and is a fine recording, their last good one 
IMNSHO.  There is a 2 CD set called "Tales of 1001 Nights" Volumes 1&2 (of 
course) with several tracks from the Carnegie Hall concerts referred to by 
the eminent Dr.J  

So, don't leave us hangin, what's the URL for the broadcast???

Ok..here it is. 1st I'd like to say that though I'm a fan...I'm not a
fanatic, so I can't tell you the name of every song played or in what
order, etc. What I can tell you is last night at this time I was on the
edge of my seat enjoying some of the finest guitar work I've ever been
lucky enough to hear. Opening act Johnny Lang was not exactly right up
my alley, but the kid definitely has soul. I shudder to think of the
possibilities of this 19 yr. old playing with other musicians of his
caliber. Headliner Jeff Beck was even better than I remember seeing him
open for Santana a couple of years ago. He started off with What Mama
Said from the new disc Who Else. I was amazed that this and other new
material could be done so well live. With a 4 piece band! The drummer,
Steve Alexander kept things incredibly tight..right on with the
sequencing...and what a kit. Must have been 200 pieces that he
skillfully navigated. The bassist, Randy Hope-Taylor was a black
dude...I don't mean to stereotype but need I say more? Jennifer Batten
rounded out the band on guitar/guitar-synth. What an excellent player!
No keys necessary. The one older tune that I recognized wasn't off of
Wired or Blow By Blow...I tried to find it on these recordings earlier
this evening. Aside from Who Else they're the only one's I have so now
I'm just going to have to start buying more of the cd's until I find
that song. In conclusion, at age 54, Jeff Beck is better than ever.
Don't miss this tour! If you go, tell 'em Mammie sent you...might get
you a Head for Backstage Pass. Later, Ez

excessive use of abbreviations, I won't bother with them.  I apologize to

What was the question? Oh yeah...When did you 1st hear GG? Did you like
them immediately? Have to Acquire the Taste? Did you run right out and
start buying their recordings? How old were you? etc. So far there have
been 27 respondents. Most are pushing 40 and 1st heard GG in the mid
'70's. 75% liked them and bought recordings soon after their 1st listen.
In other words...you are me and I am you and we are we and...I'd like to
thank the list 'veterans' for rehashing stories undoubtedly already
told...and the half a dozen or so de-lurkers for joining in on the fun.
But it doesn't have to end here. Keep the responses coming...this is
real GG content here. Sadly, there's not much of that these days. What
am I talking about...I've only been on the list for a few months! ROFL
