Hi I would like to respond to the Mammienun Poll. I had a late start to progressive music as it was a taste that passed me by in my youth. I had heard of Gentle Giant through the St Cleve newsletter as at the time my main love of music was an obsession of anything Tull. I had heard of Giant but in Australia unless you go looking for it it is not a style of music you will readily find in the stores. I found my first Gentle Giant CD second hand in a store in Sydney approx 2 1/2 years ago. "Acquiring The Taste". I brought this CD on spec not having heard them before. I was hooked straight away and have been buying most Giant CD to date. I am now 43 so as I said I was a late starter with progressive music but have taken to it like the proverbial duck to water. It was utterly different from any rock music that had been made up to that time. > The only other record which changed my music listening habits since, was Bark Psychosis' > "Hex" The only other albums that made an appproximately similar impression on me as AtT was Pink Floyd's "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds", Traffic's Debut album, the Moody Blues' "Days Of Future Passed" (hey, this was 1967), Genesis' "Trespass", .... and seeing King Crimson in concert in 1969. No, it's not. Actually, it's the exact opposite of the Universe project. All of the 1988 FZ big band musicians got sacked except the fabulous Mike Keneally and the bass player Scott Thunes. MK and ST went on to play in Zappa's Universe, as the rest of the bunch formed this group. And, it's spelled "Band from Utopia", but, well, the pun is still there (if there ever was one). Anyway. This disc is a Muffin Records release from 1995, and it was recorded live at The Jazz Open Festival, Stuttgart, Germany. The album & the band sounds quite lame and tired. The reason for this could be that there's no real guitarist on the album (Arthur Barrow and Ike Willis both play the guitar, but...). And the overall sound of the recording is like it was taken from the soundboard but hasn't been mixed since. The booklet looks like a typical inexpensive release. And I'd guess the album is out of print by now (not exactly a top 40 seller). So, good luck finding this CD, but be warned that it might not be worth the hunt.
