Interesting -- I have the exact opposite experience. I enjoy Keneally best when listening to an entire album at a time, while reading the lyric sheet. To me, his albums are theatrical performances filled with an ever-changing procession of ideas. The variety contributes so much to the experience. If I listen to only a few Keneally tunes in isolation, they don't do as much for me. At least this has been my experience with HAT and BOIL THAT DUST SPECK. I like Keneally's melodies too, especially how their rhythms interlock so unusually and tightly with the instruments'. For example, in "I Can't Stop" from HAT, during the verses, the instrumentals and vocals are woven together in a rather GG-like fashion. (Doo, do do "Crazy men" do do, do do "Do crazy things," etc.) Unexpected and well done. I've been a subscriber for some two years and now I have moved my subscription from work to home I feel more able to contribute. It was also the best man comment that helped - it was a friend who became my best man that introduced me to GG - it would be IAGH when I would be about 17/18. I was moving from a blues fan to jazz at the time Mayall - Coliseum - Nucleus - Miles. In the main my purchases have been jazz but I had a full set of GG tapes from my friend that got good use. I saw them eventually as the main and only act at Bournemouth Winter Gardens on Friday march 28th 1974 (I still have the stub) and it sticks out as one of the all time great concerts. Favourite group - afraid not, but I don't know who is, when GG were at their height McLaughlin could do no wrong for me then, but now I find it too intense. I bought Free Hand in Chatham, Kent mid 70, and renewed my interest when I bought the on-reflection compilation and then Under Construction. My interests now are still jazz (andy shepard, django bates..) and a fair amount of 20th century "classical", but like a lot of us I'm filling in what I wanted when I was younger but couldn't afford - like Zappa. If I can add my two'pennth to why GG weren't popular I subscribe to the voice theory. As an aside my wife came from Poole/Bournemouth, 15 miles from Portsmouth, and frequently danced to Simon Dupree live on a Friday night. I must say over the years I've enjoyed this list - I have bought some CD's on recommendations here - e.g Jon lord's saraband, and I enjoyed it as well. Sound quality starts bad but gets better...annoying rattle of snare springs with every bass note (that's a lot of rattling). Great stuff. On the length x width discussion...though this area was well covered, does enthusiasm count for anything? Went to see JT last night. 1st, we all know that Ian's vocals aren't what they once were, but could he ever really sing? They still haven't found a way to generate the 1.7 gigawatts of power necessary to make hearing IA's vocals possible (you thought I was going to say time travel?). This time around they were much better than in previous yours I've seen..going back as far as Rock Island. No, really, but it's early in the tour so how he'll fair later on is anyone's guess. The band was hot and Ian's flute playing is phenomenal. The set list contained 5 tunes from Stand Up, 3 Aqualung obligatories, a 4 from the new disc. The opener, Steel Monkey (Scott's favorite?) was scorching. The new material went over really well especially Hunt by Numbers and Wicked Windows. The other 2 new ones played were Spiral and the title track (sort of). No Passion Play or TaaB...but the highlight of the show was Hunting Girl...superb! Not much for lighting...sound was great. I've attended so many great shows and this one is nowhere near the top of my list, but I would recommend seeing it even if just for old times sake. They're going to be in Cayahoga Falls tomorrow nght..I'd love to hear what Dr. J thinks. What's up Doc? Favorite song on the album is "I Am the Dance of Ages", in turns atmospheric and rockin'. "Pure Love" is pretty cool, an organ-based 4-part suite of sorts. Here's one: "Schooldays" (from Three Friends): "Seagulls scream and pink ice cream and the deep blue sky ..." But you're right, there are hardly any. Is it because so many of their songs deal with human relationships and down-to-earth ideas (refreshing when compared to the subject matter of other prog-rock bands)?
