Like David said very dark. I personnally prefer Pieces of Africa where KQ play african music (more lively and joyful, except for the final track, the original version of 'White Man Sleep' by South African composer Kevin Volans. This piece is worth by itself the purchase of this CD. This version is also better than the arrangement found on the White Man Sleep CD. Night Prayers is another CD that's worth a listen if you're into modern russian composers - once again very dark music (ain't that surprising!). Some pieces are accompanied by northeastern Russia throat singers. Amazing what they can do with their throat and lungs!. Short Stories is also an interesting CD with some music by Zorn, Sharp and Oswald. Also a re-arranged blues by Dixon (I forgot the title), but it's worth a listen. The last one I bought was Howl USA. This one is a bit tough to listen to. It's basically someone reading poetry with KQ making noise in the background. I ain't liking it so much. KQ also put out a few CD eps, the coolest is probably At the foot of Wagner's grave by is so- in-law On another topic entirely, a few weeks ago I found a used lp by L Shankar. It was produced by FZ himself. He co-wrote 2 of the songs (No more Mr. Nice Girl and I forgot the second title), and FZ wrote most of the lyrics. No so interesting except for the 2 FZ contributions. Obviously. He should have played on it though because the guitar player (don't recall his name at the moment) did not really succeed in is Zappaism. The lineup was Fairport Convention, then Steeleye Span, then Renaissance. Fairport were doing the last tour (as it turned out) with the Swarbrick/Nicol/Pegg/Mattacks lineup, and they rocked, and I became a serious Fairport fan from that date, although the only song they did that I had known beforehand was "Sloth." Then Steeleye Span came on, whom I had seen (and loved) the previous year, and Maddy Prior was spot-on and the whole band was tight. And Renaissance? I can't even remember who was in the band, except a young Russian keyboardist who gave off the air of a classical musician manqué. Annie Haslam seemed stuck-up, and at one point she said, after some incident I can't remember, "Isn't it always a laugh when you come to see us?" I felt like saying, "I didn't travel all the way from Princeton to Philadelphia just to see *you*." I haven't been much interested in Renaissance since then, either, come to think of it. Just said that, yes, compared to anything they'd ever done before, it was by far the closest to "pop" Renaissance had ever gotten up to that time (Carpet of the Sun being a little too laid back IMO for that distinction). It's a good song. Oh, can you explain why the subject matter of vultures would rule something out as a pop song? I knew I could count on you. ;-) We all already know that I disagree completely with Claudio on this opinion (snore, snore). Anyone who likes Renaissance and doesn't check out Scheherazade and A Song For All Seasons is doing themselves quite an injustice. And Novella and Azure d'Or have many fine moments, too. In fact, in terms of relative quality during the late-70's "swansong years," I'd most certainly rather listen to Azure d'Or once a day for a year than Giant For A Day once a week for a month. (I do think Civilian was a helluva way to go out with a bang, however.) Fire away, GFaD lovers! :-) Of course, while GG went away quicker, Renaissance's swansong was regrettably to be extended well into the 80s. Though Biffy disagrees, the percentage of drek on their two early-80s releases was stupefying. Hail all, I was randomly searching the net for old bands last night and checked out "Captain Beyond". Lo and Behold, I found two large websites and news that they have somewhat reformed and played gigs in Florida and a Festival in Sweden this summer. Rhino and Bobby Caldwell are the only original members in the current lineup...but I've always had a soft spot for ol'Rhino, ever since the Iron Butterfly "Metamorphosis" album (which was my FIRST 8-track that I got for my first car in 1970)! Yes, fond memories of old days!!! :-) I saw him play last in 1989 (with IB) and he kicked ass...and the reports of his (and this CB line-up) playing, were effusively positive. However, it was written by a big time fan...so it is hard to accurately judge how it really was. I'm sure many of you have seen some bands from your youth reform...the meaning that the music has to you personally often creates a generous and somewhat bias evaluation. But that's OK by me...I was a bigtime CB fan (particularly #1&2), so if they tour out this way, I'll go, and probably love 'em as well! I had good success with Brand X lately and will be seeing Ten Years After next week...so, if I'm lucky and CB does tour I'll get to hear how "Raging River of Fear" sounds nearly thirty years later. They were (are?) a rockabilly/grunge band, and the CD is entitled "Disgraceland". The song is called "Green Haze". They stuck to the actual lyrics (every word, inflection, and melody line) and were equally true to the underlying instrumental from "Purple Haze". You'd be surprised at how those two themes harmonize together when sung - crooned - screamed - and played over the top of one another. Astonishing and hilarious! Doug, never heard of Savatage but did a search and saw their picture and who they's toured with. From this I conclude that they are a heavy metal band. So what is the link? Is it that the above mentioned tune, Ase's Death, segues to the Grieg tune? On a Hendrix note (Weee-aaahhh!) Has anyone heard the new Nigel Kenedy album 'Hendrix'? He was performing this live on BBC Radio 3 the other night and I have a recording of it. To be honest there are only a few recognisable Hendrix themes in there except for one number which is a medley of songs. It's the 2nd rock album that I know of that he's done and the original(?) ideas here seem to be remeniscent of the stuff on the Kafka album. For anyone who doesn't know Nigel Kenedy, he is a virtuoso Brithish violinist mainly known for his classical work and also for his punk style haircut and flamboyant dress.
