Who has time to read? Just going through my daily e-mail with you people
is like a novel a night! Ok..I read two newspapers a day (focusing on
the sports and funnies). Most recently I did read a Muhammed Ali bio,
Only In America (Don King Bio), and last X-mas one of my gifts was The
Real Frank Zappa. God I feel like an idiot q;^()> I want to be well
read, but I'm too busy working my mammiefingers to the mammiebone. On
top of that, Nick-at-Nite is airing all of the Jefferson reruns...can't
miss those. Right Drew? Gotta run and un-sub now before the fallout.

It was definitely stripped-down -- not sure if it was completely
acoustic or not. Now that you mention it, the keyboardist's name *was*
Raphael, and somehow I got the impression that he was Russian -- can't
remember how, 14 years later.

Glad to hear it.

You probably know better than I do. I'm happy to improve my opinion. I
always liked what I heard of their early-to-mid-70's recordings.
<>
Yeah, but I didn't have a car then or now (the Un-American listmember?
;-)). The SEPTA/NJT switch at Trenton is murder on getting home after
concerts, or at least it was back then, when they coordinated the
schedules less well than they do now. In fact, that was the night I got
stuck at the Trenton train station, which has unremoveable wooden
armrests every 3' or 4' on its wooden benches and plays its muzak (Bob
Marley's "No Woman, No Cry" was repeated often) very loudly.
<>
If you bring a tape recorder to GORGG, you can get a bootleg of Wreck
Unplugged (and a few other GG ggoodies if I can get my act together amid the
busy-ness of moving and trying to finish an old job so I can look for a
permanent one). The tape of my playing you have exists because an O-R
member (who may come forward if he wishes) who was not in NYC at the
previous NY GGettoGGether was curious about my playing and offered me
something interesting for it (which, as far as I know, he's still working
on, and I expect it to be good! :-)). The only recordings of my
performances I could find were from 1991-94, long predating "Wreck
Unplugged." That also means that most of the Reformation-era hymn tunes I
improvise on aren't there either -- no Genevan Psalm 42 with the rockin'
time signature changes, for instance. People have been telling me I should
make a recording for 7 years now, so I should probably do something about
it. It's one of those things that's always been on the back burner but I've
never had the time/money/knowledge to do.

Now HERE's a thread :-) Ginny....are you okay??? Only kidding. Hmmm.
First Nick will get NO argument from me on the best songwriter currently
working....although I'm not sure I want to call him a singer /songwriter.
I will have to disagree with Nick (for the first time in his post)on his
implication that RT's work has been lacking in some way up to present. If
anything has been lacking it has been Mitchell Froom's imagination while
doing the production work. This has been dealt with on Mock Tudor by
throwing the bum out. :-) Richard's material has been consistently strong
IMO from Rumour and Sigh on. You?Me?Us? is not getting the accolades it
deserves...Cold Kisses? Woods of Darney? Put it There Pal? Hide it Away?
Sam Jones? Train Don't Leave? As usual, whether you're looking for
songwriting that is just catchy pop or real 3 minute literature (???), or if
you're looking for guitar licks on top of licks, it fills the bill...great
packaging too (this goes for Mock Tudor as well). On Mock, RT once again
ranges his musical and lyrical prairie, this time with a decent production
job and it is very satisfying. Like a lot of great music, it often takes
several listens to get it all sinking in. With the exception of Rumour and
Sigh there has never been a Richard Thompson album that blew me away on the
first listen and several of them have taken me 5 or more. You?Me?Us? took
me at least 8-10 spins to finally grab me. All I can suggest to Ginny is
that if you are looking for "new" (I'll take that to mean different), try
him solo, try him acoustic, try him live, try him as a duo, a trio, a
quartet and his "big band", try him laid back and contemplative then try him
kicking ass, whether acoustic, electric, rock 'n roll, neo-traditional...
Nobody does it like Richard Thompson. He's that unique. The guy has been
writing and playing for 32 years or more (and that's just since he's been
recording the stuff!) sooooo, aside from delving into styles he doesn't
want to delve into what's he got left to prove? (That said, I think he'd
make a hell of a jazz musician.) If you had to pick out just ONE label to
stick on him you'd have to call him a songwriter...so what are songwriters
going to do these days to earn a buck? Right. They're going to work in a
pop music idiom. Richard Thompson just happens to expand the limits of pop
music to close to the breaking point. Doesn't an artist have the right to
choose his field and work with it until he chooses to venture on? How many
times have we talked on this list about artists that moved on from the work
that had endeared them to us only to have us be so sorrily disappointed?
I've said it before here...it ain't prog but so what? Besides Ginny, I
feel like I'm preaching to your choir here....what gives? Thanks for
bringing it up Nick!

Chuck: "What I'd like to know...are what you listers are listening to in the
way of pop?"
Well, Chepotles Tindall beat me to Owsley (damn you!), so how about 12Rods,
Pete Forbes, 3rd Matinee?
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
Jeff Smith: "I read the Jaco bio"
OOH. More info, please.
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
Ant on Chipmunks (what an image): "Did you slow them down to 33 to get the
reverse effect?"
Of course. Then I proceeded to play all my parents' LPs at 45 rpm.
Wheee--a whole new world of chipmunks!
Ant on Super Furry Animals (I'm beginning to see a trend here): "...ones I
like."
They're coming to town soon, too. (Of course, I'll be skipping that show,
too...because I'm broke.)
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
Mark Thundergod: "What book are you reading at the moment?"
What Color is Your Parachute, 1999 edition.
Also: "I have just finished reading a light-hearted little book called
Plague, Pestilence and Pox"
Ever read The Day of St. Anthony's Fire?
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
Bob Angilly: "There's a local Boston band who used to do Stairway to Heaven
with the lyrics from Gilligan's Isle."
I've heard that on the radio down here (years ago). Wasn't that Dread
Zeppelin?
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
Jazzy Julian: "Are you drooling Fuse-bros? It's cooler to be a jazz-cat than
it is to be a Fuse-bro. ;)"
np: Herbie Hancock, "Empyrean Isles". rp: Art Blakey and the Jazz
Messengers, "Moanin'", Wayne Shorter, "Juju", Eric Dolphy, "Out To Lunch".
All from my recently acquired Blue Note "Rudy Van Gelder" remasters series
(I may be broke, but I'm resourceful...) Take that, Reg!
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
Composer-In-Residence Johnson: "Karl H. Worner's "Stockhausen" (interesting
read)"
Sounds good.
And: "Joan Peyser's "The New Music" (a bit old, but decent)"
I've only gotten halfway through her Bernstein bio, but it's fun.
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
Bill T again: "followed shortly by Lady Madonna/ The Inner Light. Boy, was
that a million years ago"
Still have mine (with picture sleeve). How about you?
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
Dan Weese: "helping me through a recent grief"
Thoughts and prayers your way, sir.
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
David Eric mentions Robert Silverberg...I've know I've said it here before,
but I loved "The Stochastic Man".
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
V-Bert sez: "I'm _still_ sought after!" (Not by Interpol, I hope!)
And Jim Klocek replyz: "Me, too, but I only take my pants off for one."
Hey, I charge *at least* five. And I'm worth it.
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
Ginny, you never answered--is the occasionally chromatic GG piece from AtT
that you're planning to play at GORGG "Pantagruel's Nativity"? (Or is it a
surprise?)
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
Saw Jeff Beck last week at the E-Centre (I'm still broke, but a friend paid
me with a ticket for some work I did on his PC). I think Jeff's getting
tired of this tour. He hit a couple clams during the evening and he just
seemed to be going through the motions (unlike the show I saw in the winter,
when he shredded). He should take a few years off. Again. Opener Johnny
Lang was red hot, for about a half-hour. Then his set began to lose steam.
Betcha in time, though, this kid will become a guitar hero. He certainly
has chops.
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
This coming Monday, it's Bruce & E-Street! BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
Thanks to Aldo and Michael for the GG CD info. I'm trying to snag one of
those Free Hands.
~~~~~{(@)}~~~~~
Jeez, this was long, wasn't it?
home sickly on Wednesday, i read "Hannibal" (the sequel to "Silence of the
Lambs", which is the only other movie (the _other_ "other" is 2001) that is
_better_ than the book)), verrrrrrry disappointing ending, although not
_entirely_ a waste of time.
still flipping back-and-forth thru "Jazz-Rock" to find things to add to my
"listening list".
(and succeeding)
have not picked back up Al Franken's latest "Why not me?", found it pretty
flat after absolutely _loving_ his previous ("Rush Limbaugh is a Big, Fat,
Idiot", which except for the "fat" part _is_ still entirely too true.)
still have a story or two to read in a collection of short fiction dedicated
to the memory of Roger Zelazny.
probably have some left to read in the latest collection of Bruce Sterling's
short stories, but probably won't bother. (some nice ideas (in the past,
not in this one), but what a hack!) (competition #1: was that ironic? why or
why not?)
on the other hand, probably will go back and re-read most of the stories in
a wonderful collection of Alfred Bester short-stories. (and then i'll dig
out his novels "the stars my destination" and "the demolished man"). (what
a joy of language this guy had!!!!)
the last "serious" reading i did was last winter (!) "Gravity's Fatal
Attraction - Black Holes in the Universe" published by Scientific American
Library. (i've got what looks like the first good "pop" sci book on String
Theory (that i've seen) on order.)
the last "literate" reading i did was a re-read of Flann O'Brian's "At Swim
Two Birds" (imagine if James Joyce was part of Monty Python!).
and how many of us have read "Knots" by RDLaing?
(and who stole _my_ copy?)
i'd like to start a related thread - top ten fave books, any genre, fact or
fiction, but not _just_ a list, but at least a short blurb on _why_.
thank you for your time and attention.
(D)I just finished reading your interview and thoroughly enjoyed it, Patrick.
(E)For those who haven't heard Jr. Brown's music, you may want to give it a
(J)try. He is the original 'post-modern picker'...
P.S. At least check out Patrick's interview...it's quite enjoyable.
P.P.S. And while you are there, you may want to read some of the other
interviews (I will go back when I have more time and a bit less work
pending...)...
Sorry to be so behind in this discussion of "firsts", but I must announce
that
the first 45 I ever bought was:
Steve Martin: "King Tut".
A Masterpiece.
Please, everyone, tell me that this announcement caused you to pull out your
vinyl copies of "Let's Get Small", "A Wild And Crazy Guy", or Comedy Is Not
Pretty".
Or even "The Steve Martin Brothers."
That would make my day.
[And I do hold a double BM in Piano Performance and Composition, lest you
think I'm just some weirdo.]
... wait, I am just some weirdo ... but I do hold those degrees from one of
the top ten music schools in the USA. So let me know what you think of those
Steve Martin albums, and I'll pour myself another Gin & Tonic and go to bed!
Sorry to ramble!
It's been a long night.
My current reading includes "Beating The Sicilian 2" by John Nunn.
I'm enjoying it, even more than I enjoyed "Mastering The Spanish".
"Anti-Meran Gambits" I just couldn't get into at all.
Can't wait to get a copy of "Beating The Sicilian 3" ..written not by
Nunn but by GM Joe Gallagher.
The last book I actually purchased was for my better-half, and is titled
"Feng Shui For Cats". Some of the chapters have splendid titles, such as
"Fame and Fortune";"Pleasure and Indulgence";"The Pah Kwa"; and two
quick pages of real insight called "Which Way Does Your Territory
Face?". I quote: ..." if you can't flow smoothly in and out neither can
the ch'i, and the feng shui of your territory will be irredeemably
awful ". (This brought to mind my old CD player, which got the heave-ho
when the tray began sticking all the time.)
I am more of a mag. person than a book person, actually. This is the
hidden benefit of having to occasionally visit doctors or dentists!
I will now go off to a corner and wail about this sad fact: on Monday
Spocks Beard and The Flower Kings are on the same bill, but I happen to
be in the wrong land ..... you lucky German people!
Just a short Letter from a Nut ....
