This doesn't mean that Gene Roddenberry didn't find a nice idea or two to steal but a more obvious source would probably be the film "Forbidden Planet" which (rather regretably) plays just like an episode of Star Trek. Of course I was glad too to attend a wonderful concert with a cohesive and happy band on stage...yes, happy...you can always expect Jon and Chris smiling at us, but Steve ?!?...he was making faces, smiling and dancing around while playing... (during _America_ guitar solo I thought he would even do the Chuck Berry's "duck walk" up there!) ;-) The concert lasted almost 2 1/2 hours with a perfect stage sound (loud enough and no problems at all) but not much for lightning (I didn't care). Concerning the new songs, I didn't like _Lightning Strikes_ - it could be part of any Jon's world music solo albums - but really enjoyed the other five (I assume _Ladder_ is gonna be a worthwhile album to buy!). The old songs were great, particularly _Awaken_ that I felt it was the highlight of the show. In between songs, besides "Te amo, Sao Paulo" (I love you, SP), Jon sang bits of Close to the Edge, Soleil and about one minute of Time and a Word with all of us singing along. Now the musicians: Billy and Igor were discreet but efficient. Alan playing was nice, but made a few mistakes...without compromising though. Chris played great bass lines and showed a big collection of basses including the 3-neck famous one. Jon - Mr.Smile with a Crystal Voice - is still singing wonderfully. Steve was inspired, great solos alternating electric guitars, mandolin, pedal steel, danelectro and acoustic guitar. Conclusion: Yes fans, don't miss it!!! There's been quite a few that have knocked me about; off the top of my head (and in no particular order): The Ebony Tower-John Fowles- deals with basic questions in the thinking/feeling argument and (within the plot) applies them to visual rt( oil painting). Helped me to analyze my reactions to abstraction in oil painting and music. Lords of the Starship/Canticle for Leibowitz -Mark S. Gaston and Walter Miller respectively 2 books that dealt with the notion of technology in absence of God. I need to re-read the latter as I was just a young strapper at the time :-) Vietnam-Stanley Karnow- a book that convinced me that it is more important to pay attention to an independent, intelligent and free press than government or media controlled by moneyed interests with a self-serving agenda. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance-Robert Pirsig: deals with the thinking/feeling debate again. Also deals with the philosophical debate of the individual versus the collective. Connects the idea of doing good ("quality") work to the basic notion of the human spirit. . Marjorie Morningstar-Herman Wouk: Don't quit on your essential spirit! The Bond of Power-Joseph Chilton Pearce- metaphysical arguments incorporating psychology and eastern religion. Helped me to define my core theology (such as it is!) 1984-George Orwell affected me not because of the more overt message of overly intrusive government, but because of the more sinister aspects of the use of technology (the telescreen/television) to mold opinion and manipulate the masses. Atlas Shrugged/The Fountainhead-Ayn Rand-questionable literature but stimulating philosophy. With the below, made me confront my personal responsibility to myself. At at the same time I recognized the power of absolute zealotry. Interestingly, I rejected communism AND atheism at this time. Erroneous Zones-Wayne Dyer---I despise self help books but 20 years ago this one helped me out of a very tough time in my life. I quit blaming others for my own problems and was forced to confront my own responsibility for my own life. The Jungle-Upton Sinclair- it's been many years for me since reading this but I remember it as a scathing indictment of the greed and inhumanity of unregulated big business. Timeless reading and an essential counterpoint to the naive idealism one encounters reading (a well meaning) Ayn Rand (among others). Well, that's ten! Off to bed! I thought it may be of interest to some of us: Has anyone heard AD's posthumous release called "Last Tracks" ? There's a brief German text on the back cover explaining what happened: (Please excuse the rough quality of translation. Notes in parenthasis by me) "The last chapter" (side A) On this side of the record you will hear pieces done by the new formation of Anyone's Daughter. After the recording of the double LP "Anyone's Daughter Live"('84), Matz (Mathias Ulmer) and Uwe (Karpa) had to serve military duty in Stuttgart and Hamburg respectively. Harald (Bareth) did not want to wait for them for one and half year for them to finish up so he headed to Belgium for medical study. Peter Schmidt went another band. After leaving the service Matz and Uwe looked for new musicians and found Goetz Steeger from Hamburg (on drums), Michael Braun from Bayern (on vocal) and Andy Kemmer from Stuttgart (on bass). In this formation the pieces on this side(*) were recorded in various studios. Unfortunately this band didn't last long, a good reason being that they lived too far apart, so this release marks the last LP by Anyone's Daughter. (*track listing: Friday the 17th/ Stay with me/ Much too late/ Echoes/ Move on) "How it all began" (side B) On this side(**) of the record are the never-before-released first recordings by Anyone's Daughter. Back in the spring of 1978 we recorded "I hear an army", "Sally the green", "Ma chere Marquis de Sade, "Window Pain" and our hymn "Anyone's Daughter" at the Zuckerfabrik studio. The take of the piece "Anyone's Daughter" was released unchanged on the 1st LP "Adonis", but "Sally the Green" was once again recorded in a refreshed version. For the rest of the pieces there was no room to fit in on "Adonis". Now that the band is gone and no more recording contracts in place, we can finally release these unpolished diamonds from the beginning of Anyone's Daughter. (** track listing: I hear an army/ Sally the green/ Ma chere Marquis de Sade/ Window Pain). P+C Anyone's Daughter. BTW, Harald Bareth seems to be back in music activity. I don't know if he made it through medical school and became a doctor or not, but he hasn't been heard for a long time untill a brief appearnce as one of the vocalists on Ines' "Eastern Dawning" ('95). He sings on 3 songs there. "In Deep" is IMO a better album than "All Together Now", and "Nexus" has the band going in a more progressive style. When Russ Ballard quit after "Nexus" (or actually after the terrible live album "Encore"), they leaned more towards jazz-rock. I never liked Ballard's guitar style (or songwriting) much, so I welcomed this change of direction as well as a terriffic new guitarist (John Grimaldi). "Circus" is a bit uneven, but "Counterpoints" has them playing better than ever. Here's a musicians question about our favourite band: I browsed Dan Barretts excellent web site looking for information about Kerrys keyboard setup, but unfortunately I didn't find any, so maybe some of you can give me an answer. I would like to know which keyboards he used and in which periods of time he used which models. Specifically: 1. Which type of Hammond(s) did Kerry play? 2. Which mellotrons did he use when. (I know he recorded with the rare M300 early on, but it seems he toured later with an M400) 3. What brand of effect units did he use. (MXR phaser? Small Stone?) 4. Which model clav? 5. Which stringers did he use in the later years? 6. Which electric pianos (Wurlitzer I know, but did he ever use a Rhodes?) I have details on all these sort of things for Tony Banks from 1969 till now, but I always found Kerrys keyboard sound a model of simplicity and taste. Any details you may have would be interesting. I tried to scrutinize the photos on the web site, but there are no pictures of Kerrys keyboards. Maybe an instrument section would be a nice addition to the web site? Worth a thought. Hi!

Here's a musicians question about our favourite band:
I browsed Dan Barretts excellent web site looking for information about
Kerrys keyboard setup, but unfortunately I didn't find any, so maybe some
of you can give me an answer. I would like to know which keyboards he used
and in which periods of time he used which models. Specifically:

1. Which type of Hammond(s) did Kerry play?
2. Which mellotrons did he use when. (I know he recorded with the rare M300
early on, but it seems he toured later with an M400)
3. What brand of effect units did he use. (MXR phaser? Small Stone?)
4. Which model clav?
5. Which stringers did he use in the later years?
6. Which electric pianos (Wurlitzer I know, but did he ever use a Rhodes?)

I have details on all these sort of things for Tony Banks from 1969 till now,
but I always found Kerrys keyboard sound a model of simplicity and taste.
Any details you may have would be interesting. I tried to scrutinize the
photos on the web site, but there are no pictures of Kerrys keyboards. Maybe
an instrument section would be a nice addition to the web site? Worth a thought.

Cheers

Great show, a nonstop set going from one three to five minute song to the next without a break. Tons of incredible guitar. Ears are still ringing (and probably will all week, although I've mostly regained my balance after some of the high notes rattled the middle ear). ------------------------------ End of on-reflection-digest V1 #1864 ************************************
