It's isn't that I have any problem with bodice rippers as reading
material. Some are very well crafted novels, rich with character and
ambiance and written by very talented people (Say, Diana Gabaldon).
However, too many of them, most I would say by the plethora of exposed
bosoms in the book store racks, are simply 'quickies', shall we say
(yes, we MUST say quickies) in the literary world, only there to make an
easy buck by it's lurid combination of sex and violence. Kind of like a
lot of music out there!

So that brings me to a thought... perhaps there should be a music genre
called Cheezy Bodice Rippers, because I know the songs are out there....

For us they did, most of the rest of the GG audience skipped the GD part of
the program. Here's the short version. The Grateful Dead were doing their
15th anniversary tour during the summer of 1980. They played at Folsom
Field in Boulder (home of the Buffs) that Saturday afternoon. GG was
scheduled to play at the Rainbow Music Hall (actually, a converted movie
tri-plex with horrible acoustics located in the suburban wasteland of South
Denver) that evening. Anyway, the Dead show was, uh, a lot like any other
Dead show--except it was their 15th anniversary--which made it a lot like
any other Dead show--except it wasn't at Red Rocks. The atmosphere was
decidedly laid back. Walking into the Rainbow was an interesting contrast;
there was a buzz that was sort of like what you feel when lightning is
about to strike somewhere nearby--with that telling burnt ozone smell...

All that is to say that GG proved they were THE band. They made the boys
from the Dead look like so many other Jimmy Page-like hacks (there, I said
it Reg).

Yo Globies--

I just got off the phone with Sheri Jacobs and wanted to pass along a couple
of things...

First of all, she has just received today a few more GG CDs. As of when I
spoke to her, she had Giant For A Day, Civilian, Free Hand, The Power And
The Glory, The Missing Piece (some titles on Repetoire, some on Terrapin,
one on Vertigo). She asked that I pass this along in the event anyone was
told she was out of stock the other day (when she actually was). Check with
her again to see what's available currently-- 800-245-4639 ext 40. She's
currently trying to weed through all the e-mail messages she's received
since the news broke here that she had stock. Which brings me to...

...she was SWAMPED with e-mails, calls and visitors to the Spin Street store
after the news first hit O-R, and she was amazed at the response. I told
her GG fans are nothing if not rabid...

...she was apologetic that the stock was returned to the warehouse before
some of you got to the store the other day...

...and, best of all, she said we were the most generous group of fans she's
ever dealt with. Whenever she asked any of us if we were interested in any
GG titles other than those we were ordering, she said that to a person we
all wanted to make sure others had the chance to order too (instead of
grabbing up all of the goods, as she's seen with other bands by "fans"
wanting to make a quick buck on the auction market).

I'm proud of you guys (sniff)...

My nine year old daughter has been dancing around the house to the
sounds of Adrian Belew. The CD "Desire of the Rhino King" has some
Zappa-esque type of songs on it and she has been enjoying the CD's
"Young Lions" and "Mr. Music Head". I think Belew is probably one of
the few writers that seems able or inclined to weave the mundane
happenings of life, including references to the kids and the wife, into
rock music.
I'll put it this way... I took Zappa off the kids listening list at my

Gee Biff, do you think that the fact he had a new album about to come out
had anything to do with that? How about the fact that the recording is by
now a "tweener " (having come out in '96) and puts it in a tough spot for an
artist that tends to feature current material and a wide assortment of back
catalog material in concert? Even assuming that the new recording being
imminent would have no impact on a decision not to utilize any of the
material in a show, or even in a tour, this is not an admission that he
deems the material lacking. It's an admission that he knows people may not
be receiving it as favorably as they have other material. I don't think it
is the same thing. In interviews he has commented that he is quite aware
what is readily embraced by his core fans and what is not. Evidently this
recording did not achieve the same level of acclaim, or sales, as Rumour and
Sigh, never mind Shoot Out the Lights or any of a myriad of other standout
recordings. While he cannot be construed as pandering to the masses, he
certainly wants to continue to present shows that are well received. I had
the opportunity speak with Nancy (his wife) on several occasions during our
trip with her tour group and she tells me that Richard is forever trying to
balance his art, as he perceives it, and the need to respond to the market
in a way that maintains his artistic freedom of expression. Given the fact
that he is doing this professionally it doesn't seem like such a terrible
thing. So I take it you're familiar with his work?

It's a gospel of "me first", which can be interpreted as selfish, but it's
more about not abandoning one's beliefs because it may be advantageous or
popular to do so. Rand's philosophy celebrates the individual and

I do not subscribe to her renouncement of kindness or charity however. I am
both kind and charitable when it suits me, but do not give blindly to those

I remember a very good book by Boris Weinstein (russian) and I think
it was called (in spanish) "La Trampa en la Apertura", Tricks at the
Opening, or something like that. It is a fantastic book.
Also, have any of you have read about Carlos Torre, he was a Grand
Master at a very young age and it is said that he once defeated the
world champion (1925, I think, can't recall his name now, a German no
doubt) in Moscow by sacrificing his QUEEN. He then went to beat the
champ in less than 7 moves...
A lot of chess clubs in Mexico are named after this man from
