I don't think so. Last week someone quoted Kerry for saying that he stopped
using
the mellotron live as it was too much weight to carry around for just
supporting
the Mini-Moog. This of course implies that until that decision was made he
actually
DID drag the mighty 'tron around.

Hello Giants!

I received the new remaster of RAINBOW's "Rising" yesterday. I have listened
to it 4 times since. The people at Polydor did a fine job remastering this
recording. It you want to hear Zeppelin like "Kashmir" sounding tracks with
some more accomplished guitar work ;), you owe it to yourself to purchase
the RAINBOW - "Rising" recording. This record(to my ears at least), is one
of Ritchie Blackmore's finest(on par with many classic Deep Purple
recordings). This album has a mystic & grandiose sound with plenty of killer
guitar riffs and electric classical arpeggios, as well as a top notch
line-up to boot. Here's the line-up:

RITCHIE BLACKMORE - Guitar
COZY POWELL - Drums and Percussion
JIMMY BAIN - Bass
DON AIREY - Keyboards
RONNIE JAMES DIO - Band Midget & Vocals

Cozy is kick ass on the drum kit, and Dio's finest vocals can be heard on
the "Rising" recording(don't worry, he sounds nothing like he did in the
'80s). The "Rising" album was Blackmore's stab at Prog. Rock, and it's not
*commercial* in the least. There is also an orchestra(Berlin
Philharmonic...I believe) which grace the last track of the album while
blending in perfectly with the Rainbow band. Check it out if you can. You
won't be disappointed.

Ciao,

REGINALD DUNLOP

P.S. The remaster is available at Cheap or What CDs in the UK. I am in no
way affiliated with them, just a happy customer. :) If you need the URL to
go there, just send me an e-mail.

>HOT TIP--I went to see Larry Coryell (w/ Eleventh House and Alphonse Mouzon) play at a small club last night and....these guys still kicks ass better than he did in the seventies (when I last saw Larry) and better than most guitarists I've seen so far in the nineties!! Don't miss a chance to see'em if you get a chance... pure mental brain flossing!

Thanks Dr. Skull, you are one of my favorite mennil toss flycoons. Who else was in the band? I heard a wild rumor that Jeff Berlin was with him. All my Fusion Brethren and Sisteren must pick up Coryell/Coster/Smith's Cause and Effect - it's shreddin'.

>Also, the other day I got the "Knots" CD, but have not yet been able to listen to it. What do y'all think of it?

I have found it slow going as well - not very tuneful.

>I still can't find Tull's latest CD anywhere - anyway in the meantime can you guys at least tell me who plays on the album other than Ian and Martin of course.

Doane Perry, Jonathan Noyce, and Andy Giddings - this lineup seems pretty solid. - S.

Thanks for the Rainbow info! Did you, or anyone, by any chance hear
Blackmore's recent 'medieaval' project (title slipped my mind...Under a
Violet Moon)? I only heard a few bars, but wasn't very impressed. Too kitsch
& false romanticism IMHO. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

There is no mellotron on Playing the Fool, or on any other live
Giant. Then only thing added to PtF, according to legend, is that
the clavinets were all re-recorded afterwards due to the usual
tonnage of buzz and hummmmm they provide.

Well, I'd NEVER argue with Kerry, and I'll assume the rest of you know what
you're talking about (one-time only, special offer), so I'll submit to TPatG
being Rhodes-generated. However, a band I was in used to do "Aspirations".
At the time I had both a Wurlie and a Rhodes, and I got much closer to the
recorded sound with my Wurlie. Maybe I have a bad Rhodes (I sold the Wurlie
to a Supertramp fan for more than I paid for it and I was DAMN tired of
maintaining it!). I just didn't hear all the specific overtones one usually
associates with a Rhodes. Maybe gets back to the questionable quality of the
Capitol vinyl. But I have the Capitol CD and it sounds the same way. Maybe
my ears have lost some high-end. (My, how could THAT be?)

So NOW I had to listen to TPatG again and reorient myself. Just when I
thought I knew what I was talking about...it's definitely a Rhodes. But I
found the signature sound at the lower registers rather than higher up. I
guess I was (and still am) more interested in what he's playing than "WHAT"
he's playing, if you catch my drift. Funny that I never thought about the
instrumentation before...

Thank you for setting me straight! I hate it when that happens, BTW

Which is why I had both, the Rhodes sat on top of the Wurli's flat top very
nicely, though I preferred the Wurli's action...many a "break time" was spent
in Wurli maintenance while the boys were off enjoying a cold one...bastards!
Amazing what you could do in 15 minutes if you were motivated!

More times then I'd care to count.....having to re-voice chords on
the fly so as to avoid the missing reed was always a thrill. Every
time I tried to put solder on the reed, and re-tune it by filing it
down, that damn thing would break the very next time I played it.

However, WE were lucky....at least we weren't carrying around a
freakin' MELLOTRON, like some people we know......

yeah, but that recording is not from a _tour_.
Live for BBC shows were sometimes done in a theatre, but often done "live"
in a studio with limited opportunities for overdubbing.

To me the signature sound of the Rhodes comes at about 4:30 of
Proclamation, right after the "day by day by day by day..." fadeout, in
that repeating low 2-note figure with the ping-pong effect going.

BTW, I'm just eating up all the keyboard talk. Thanks, everyone!

The liner notes on OotF indicate that both the '73 and '78 shows were
recorded at Golders Green Hippodrome, London. The '73 show was recorded
16/11 (their typo, not mine) and Transmitted by BBC 8/12/73. Even if
this gig was recorded in the midst of a tour there was plenty enough
time to dub in a Mellotron. Was there any doctoring done Dr. J? q;^()>

In Today (Saturday)'s Guardian (a British broadsheet) there is an article on
the 100 greatest album covers of all time.
I thought it was quite unbiased, for a British newspaper, but it really is
an article about the book of the same name, therefore it doesn't involve any
typical British music-reporting inverse snobbery.

I wonder how many of the covers the people on this list might propose that
would coincide with the authors' choices.

When I get to work, I might scan the article.
