It's not the better man that wins, but the promoters that "win", i.e. manipulating decisions in such a way that you make the real money with the next fight (see, mammie, you're more than right). This is what I heard. So what's the truth? -David Eric Hi all, 'My version' of the story - which of course IS the truth - is based upon a) me, being an old time hardcore Hendrix fanatic pretending to know one or two things about the man and b) the biography 'Hendrix - The Complete Story' by John McDermott & Eddie Kramer (Hendrix' studio engineer, quite a reliable source I would like to think). Besides, Fat Mattress could never have opened for Hendrix, 'cause Jimi hadn't done any concerts in the UK yet: didn't have a band and music at the time of these auditions (October '66). As far as I know Hendrix only did a few informal jams after he'd arrived in London in august: one with Zoot Money's Big Roll Band (with a very young Andy Summers) and one with Cream, an event that made Clapton leave the stage totally beaten. Within a week he also had his hair done Jimi-style. On top of this - Yes, I'm determined to win this discussion!!!:-) - here's a short biography of Noel Redding and some assorted Fat Mattress info that I've gathered from various sources on the internet: - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Noel Redding has been playing guitar with various groups since he left school. Noel formed the "Loving Kind" in October 1965. During its two years of existence, they recorded three singles for Pye Records, inclduing a cover of Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar ?".Unhappy at the bands recording success, and being not a little bit ambitous, Noel went his own way and attended an audition Jimi was holding in October 1966. He was persuaded to change from guitar to bass guitar, which he managed to do very successfully, making a strong contribution to the driving rhythm behind Jimi's extraordinary lead guitar. Redding formed his own band Fat Mattress in 1968, with Neil Landon on vocals, Jim Leverton on bass and Eric Dillon on drums. Chris Wood also played on the first Fat Mattress album, which was self-titled and released in the summer of 1969. The group was formed by Noel Redding, formerly of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. At that time the British music press was equally hyping the new offshoot groups Fat Mattress and Led Zeppelin, formed by Jimmy Page of the Yardbirds. Fat Mattress survived through just two albums that sold very poorly. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fat Mattress * Fat Mattress 2 (1970, Polydor) (CD reissue: Edsel, 1992, with 4 bonus tracks!!) This band was formed by Noel Redding (former bassist in Jimi Hendrix Experience), along with Neil Landon (vocals), James Leverton (bass, ex-Juicy Lucy, later in Savoy Brown), Eric Dillon (drums, later in Savoy Brown). Mick Weaver guests here, in their second album. Also guesting, Steve Hammond (guitar).  - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Could it be that Fat Mattress supported Jimi Hendrix AFTER Noel had left the Experience? Hi Kids! Apparently, Redding and Hendrix had a falling out of sorts in July of 69 re:the future direction of the band . Hendrix wanted to drop the "Experience" in order to augment the group into a "creative commune" of writers and musicians. Redding had started Fat Mattress as a part-time band some months earlier, so now he had time to devote his "full-time energy" to the band. Yes, I know about the clav addition. But on my CD version of PtF there
*definitely* is mellotron strings on the 'Knots' section. I bought this on
CD recently (One Way Records - single disc version) and almost fell off the
chair when that mellotron sound kicked in. It really came as a surprise.
I don't seem to remember it from my LP version. I am not a newbie to mellotrons,
and I am not mistaken. Another master tape? Another mix? I don't know. but
a tron it definitely is.
