I have a question about the King Crimson CIRKUS (sp?)
cd(s): Does it include any of the live at
Jacksonville 1972 performance that has been released
to DGM club members? I want to find a way to get a
copy of this (official) without joining some club, or
paying for 3 or more of the DGM releases that have
been released as an expensive package.
Here is one quick comment from a Yes and Starcastle
fan. On THE LADDER, the song "Face to Face" seems
like a winner to me. But, around 2 and 1/2 minutes
into it, with the chorus, and then the bass run, until
the end, it reminds me the most of--Starcastle!!
Specifically, some of the music on their second and
third albums, FOUNTAINS OF LIGHT and CITADEL. Any
comments from those who actually own and listen to
these albums?
I have to jet, b/c I'm off to Memphis for my
first-ever Phish concert tonight! :-) Hopefully, this
will help my spirits, regardless, as I keep up with
the score of the Astros-Reds game tonight! (c'mon
Astros!...geez...)

Just got 'The Ladder' on mp3. Good thing, cuz if I shelled out 15 bucks
for it I woulda been pissed... What a disappointment(not like I expect
anything new and innovative from Yes nowadays, just heard it was better
than OYE- that doesn't say much, and I'm always curious as to whether
they put out something I can actually listen to in one sitting). Aside
from 'Homeworld', a decent track until it hits about the 6 minute mark,
this belongs in the 'adult contemporary section', where it will last for
a few months until it goes into the bargain bin, next to Talk, Union,
and Open Your Eyes.
There are a few(very few) shining moments, like 'Nine Voices' and the
beginning of 'New Language'. Also, there is a lot more keyboard than on
OYE. Igor is great, had they still tried to be a real prog band, he
would have no problem. They finally managed to record Alan White's drums
without the 'empty arena' reverb he's been so fond of, and the backing
vocals don't sound like 800 people, so at least they've finally shed the
80's production values, it sounds a bit more organic, not over produed
in a Def Leppard kind of way like the last 5 or 6 albums. The band has
gelled a lot better. See, I said something nice.
But most of the songs sound like horrendous insipid 'up with people'
dreck, thanks to Jon, and the lyrics to 'Finally' are so bad you'd think
Trevor Rabin was back in the band. All in all, you hear some moments
shining through of what they are capaple of , but for the most part it
sounds like these guys haven't caught on to the fact that AOR rock is
dead(well, except for Aerosmith). I do miss the days when the lyrics
were just incomprehensible pseudo poetry, this stuff sounds like some
bad reaffirmation self-help thing from Los Angeles.
No, not one of those 'why cant they make another Fragile/CTTE' people,
more like 'why can't they make an album that doesn't sound like rehashed
80's dreck'? Maybe they can tour with Spock's Beard or something. Maybe
I'm not over-the-hill enough to appreciate it.
Peace, flame on.

I agree Geir - it is a shame!

I wish I could bicycle to a Spock's Beard show. I wish I could drink some De Koninck. I'll have another cup of that French Roast if you don't mind. Do the French drink French Roast? - S.

response to my Questions! I have tried to respond individually to many to you
to thank you, but it is proving to be impossible to keep up! I am a "hunt and

Again, I thank you and will slip into a LURK mode until I'm faced with another

BTW, if anyone is interested, I think that my next purchases will be as
follows: 1. Giant Tracks
2. Gryphon/Magic Mushrumps
3. One of the Supersister combo CDs
Thanks again; this is an AWESOME list!

As well you might know (and maybe not), my wonderful wife got me a CD
recorder for Christmas and I have been making many CD mixes (64 to date).
Some of them are just whatever I want to put on there, and some are thematic
(all songs about religion, sex [yeah!], and a seven CD series based on the
Seven Deadly Sins).
Anyway, I am looking for three songs that I can't find anywhere and I was
wondering if anyone has these and might be willing to shoot me off a copy.
They are:
Don Dixon "Praying Mantis"
Rob Jungklas "Memphis Thing"
The Nails "Home of the Brave" (Apocalyptic Be-Bop!)
Any help would be mucho appreciado!

Guess I'd better just say it now. I love love love Carpet Crawlers 99. Chills and etc.
No idea about a "Dance" or "Techno" mix, I only have the mp3, which sounds hugely unlike a "House" mix, or any such thing to me.
There is definitely a bit of magic with all 5 together again. Even makes me like Phil again. Took a while, but that's always been the way with Genesis and me.
You can beat me up at will in Manhattan.

Just came back from a little cd shopping at New World Record here in Buffalo
and have to mention a couple of re-releases I just saw. For fans of David
Bromberg (whose name I believe I saw here once in the last year or so)
Fantasy has issued "My Own House" the all acoustic set from '79 or '80...
IMO his best work. and Fantasy has also put out, in their ongoing series of
John Fahey reissues, "The Dance of Death and Other Plantation Favorites"
which is frickin' marvelous Fahey. Now back to your regularly scheduled
prog discussion.

Studio M is proud to announce the upcoming broadcast of Magna Carta
performing artist Tempest. If you've never heard the band, here's
your chance to check them out on the web. If you have heard the band,
you know that you won't want to miss this performance!
The vitals:
Broadcast Date: October 12, 1999
Broadcast Time: 9:00 p.m. (ET)
This is a broadcast of a performance originally recorded on August
18th in Bethlehem, PA
To hear the broadcast
Here's some additional info on the band, taken from their website, at
http://www.tempestmusic.com):
Tempest has been recording and performing since 1988, has played more
than 1000 performances and has released 7 CDs. Some have described
Tempest as a folk-rock band. Much of their repertoire is based around
traditional folk music and they definitely rock; there the accuracy
ends. Who could blame the hapless categorist when faced with Celtic
and European themes interpreted by a Norwegian lead singer and
double-necked mandolin player, a Cuban drummer, a crazy fiddle
virtuoso, a seasoned American rock bassist and a guitar player with a
fervent aptitude for heavy rock guitar. This unlikely crew has had
the audacity to mix mythology and history, Irish jigs and reels,
Norwegian traditional music and Scottish ballads with a crunchy
helping of rock & roll.
Tempest is signed to the New York based progressive label, Magna
Carta Records. Their CDs have received critical acclaim not only in
North America and Europe, but all over the world as well, from Japan
to Argentina! Tempest's high profile studio activities
notwithstanding, this is a band dedicated to creating dynamic and
compelling live shows. Tempest is well aware that the best way to
keep their enthusiastic following satisfied is to tour extensively.
The band has appeared regularly at such major festivals as
Philadelphia Folk Festival, Milwaukee Irish Fest, and the Winnipeg
Folk Festival in Canada. Tempest made their British debut in front of
twenty-five thousand people at Fairport Convention's annual Cropredy
Festival in Oxfordshire.
Hope you can tune in on the 12th!

I paid just under $13, so I guess I have less to be pissed about. I've
listened to the entire thing a couple of times now ... although, not in
one sitting ... and have reached an informed verdict. There is only one
song that I like (not the lyrics, the music) and that is "The Messenger".
That's it. :(

Only Schizoid Man IIRC. There is a version of Ladies of the Road (which is on

Question for the tech types: With the emergence of 24-bit cds into the
market I've gotten all excited that perhaps, at last, cds will take on the
total sound characterstics of lps. I had read somewhere awhile back that
this was likely to be true. Next question is, are cd players in general
capable of processing all of that digital information....I mean, I have a
10 year old cd player....will it do justice to the new 24-bit recordings?
(I have some 20-bit discs around but without an earlier 16-bit version or my
turntable set up it'd be hard to say). Or is there going to need to be the
"next generation" of disc players to play these things and capture all of
the contained (potential) sound? Finally, I assume a separate transport/DA
converter might do a better job of decoding info (and thus revealing all of
the "colors" of the music, at least making it possible for the preamp/amp to
use the information)...yes? no? Rich? Anyone?
