John, I saw Genesis on the Lamb Tour as well.  It was at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, MA.

As you described, the concert was a masterpiece, both musically and theatrically.  In fact, IMHO that whole album is a masterpiece.  If I was exiled to a deserted island and could only bring 10 CD's, that would probably be one of them.

I had center seats somewhere in the first 10 rows, but I didn't have to pull any stunts to buy them.  They were readily available.  In fact, I remember my suprise during the night of the performance at the fact that the show wasn't even sold out. And this was BOSTON!!!  A COLLEGE TOWN!!!.   Geeze.

It just reinforces my opinion which was so gracefully expressed by The Onion at http://www.theonion.com/onion3534/missing_the_point.html

Hello Giants!

Can any of you recommend the German band called ANYONE'S DAUGHTER? I hear 
their CD called "Adonis" is quite good. My only gripe might be the vocals. 
Are the vocals heavily accented or tolerable? For instance, the vocals on 
the ISLAND - "Pictures" are accented quite a bit, but I find them extremely 
entertaining. Are they like those of the ISLAND cd? On the other side of the 
coin, the vocals on PULSAR's "Halloween" are heavily accented...and I really 
hate them. Are they anything like those on the PULSAR cd?

ANYONE'S DAUGHTER have also been compared to Grobschnitt and Eloy. I have 
heard Grobschnitt, I liked the music...but couldn't stand the vocals. I have 
never heard Eloy.

What should I do? Buy the ANYONE'S DAUGHTER cd, or avoid it?

anyway.  But over the last 15 years, as the demands grew for better
audio analog-to-digital convertors, there have been some pretty wild
and clever innovations.  And the demands of 24-bit conversion are so
much greater than 16-bit conversion, different conversion schemes are
used.

I haven't been following the recent developements, but folks who are
interested in this sort of thing should check out back issues of the
Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, available at any campus
library.

How do you know it's different if you can't see it? My cousin has
somewhere around 10 aquariums. On a shelf in his spare room are 10
identical bottles each wth different lables. Ph up, ph down, green out,
etc. But it's all the same shit...at least as far as I can tell. So
unless you look beyond the number stamped on those chips...how do you
know? Does it have a couple of extra pins? What do they do? They attach
to runs on the pc board that lead nowhere! Obviously, I know exactly

Sorry for the confusion (that'll teach me to jump in at random). It's
okay, it was only a lame attempt at joking. Remember the times (or read
about them, like me) when it was obviously the most vituperative
criticism of a new piece that it "sounded like it was composed with the
aid of slide rulers and graph paper"?

I'm not aware of numbers being more vital to, say, Ferneyhough's music
than to that of other composers unless those multiple tuplets count.
Often people have a problem with radical determination of the
determinable, which in the case of music extends to lots of measurable
qualities. Those constructivist composers are only doing their job--so
what if it shows in their scores.

Twice. In fact, the Musical Box gave me my first opportunity to meet some
of my fellow O-R denizens. Ah, that was a magical night in Raleigh a couple
or three years ago when Dave and his sone Dave came down from Toronto, and
we met Dave from Fayetteville and another Dave for dinner before we all went
on to the show. Then, last fall, I went to Toronto and Dave hosted me and 
drove me all the way to Montreal where we attended the supposed swan song
concert for Musical Box where we met a couple of other O-R folk. I understand 
that it was probably not there last gig after all, but just their last gig 
doing the "Foxtrot/Nursery Cryme/Selling England By the Pound" set.

The only time I ever got to see Genesis was on the Lamb tour in Richmond, Va.

As of now I will not be able to read O-R until next thursday, the 14th, so you 
folks can go discuss baseball, soccer, football, The Fragile, the new Jethro
Tull or YES releases, but do NOT talk about anything truly interesting until
I get back. I'm off to GORGG in a lingering adventure sort of way, driving
up the Delmarva penninsula (the penninsula that is on the eastern side of the
Chesapeake bay) to New Jersey. I'll be seeing some of you folks friday.

Remember...don't discuss anything really interesting until I get back.

A personal review, by JJW :-)

Tickets were a reasonable $8 each (in advance).  My
brother and I arrived at the venue (a nice little club
with tradition, known in the area and beyond for
quality music) later than showtime.  There was a local
warmup we missed (Two Thumbs) that we later found out
had included a mandolin player, and performed well. 
Nevertheless, RLJ was not disappointing during the
evening's main event.

I am not that familiar with the primitive and/or
fingerstyle guitar category of artists.  I do have
some cds by Michael Hedges though.  And I also own and
really like the home-label first cd by Richard Johnson
(with Jud Martindale on percussion), CREATURES OF
HABIT.  This type of 12-string acoustic guitar playing
is impressive to me because of its energy, beauty, and
mystery.  Basically, it sounds like several players or
multi-tracks... when in reality, as we all know, it is
just one person making all that racket ;-) (knocking
and slapping the guitar) and sounds.  For me, some of
that appeal is lost when you actually see the
technique live for the first time.  I would have to
say my personal preference is focusing on the sounds
produced by this playing from an audio recording, and
imagining a being with more than two hands going at it
;-).

A musician like Richard Leo Johnson is also somewhat
novel to me as he both can't read music, and doesn't
know the names of the chords.  But he has used
something like 30 alternate tunings b/t his two
guitars over the years for writing, recording, and
performing.

Highlights of the show, imho, were the songs
"Shennandoah?" (the first), "Glidepath" (a reworked
song I already knew, with a nice version here), "Get
Funked", "Synthetic Blues", "New West Helena Blues",
and "Prometheus Meets the Digital Age".  The song "Get
Funked" is one of 4 in the so-called "Thirteen Year
Emergence Suite", that appears on RLJ's 1999 major
label release, FINGERTIP SHIP.  I found this cool cd
weeks after this concert in the jazz section of the
local Barnes & Noble.  Contrary to the info. I'd been
given prior to going to the show, there were no
Richard Leo Johnson cds for sale at the concert.

Nevertheless, it was nice to find out that Richard was
halfway expecting an ON-REFLECTION listmember to be in
attendence (thanks for this to Gary Davis of the
artist shop :-).  I did get to visit briefly with
Richard at intermission.  We talked fondly about
"Clyde Clifford" (who unfortunately wasn't able to
attend) and BEAKER STREET.  Johnson has had that
familiar experience of meeting people in other parts
of the country who mention BEAKER STREET when the
subjects of Arkansas, music, or the late '60s/early
'70s come up (I think his stories were about hearing
this in New Mexico, Arizona, and/or California).

Towards the end of the concert, Johnson asked if there
were any requests.  I was glad to yell, from the back
of the room, for my favorite of his pieces (from that
first cd) called "Hope Water & Light."  Richard
responded that he didn't know how to play that
anymore!  To be fair, the percussion work of Jud
Martindale is a part of the song, and RLJ is now a
solo artist.

If Richard Leo Johnson is determined to remain a solo
act, and maybe break through to more success, I humbly
suggest that he work on his stage presence and
showmanship.  Perhaps he could integrate some ideas
from acts he has opened up for on tour?, like Bela
Fleck and The Flecktones?  While he did make the
effort to interact with the audience, and shared some
interesting stories (about his friend Victor Wooten,
for instance), he came across to me as too timid and
reserved.  While I concede that his charm, humility,
friendliness, and easygoing nature (good Arkansan
traits :-) all reflect well on him as a person... as a
performer, some charisma is helpful, esp. when playing
this type of instrumental music, full of
similar-sounding songs.  Otherwise, you might begin to
lose the attention of the audience.  Maybe this played
a factor in the decisions of many (even when playing
to a home state crowd including some of his longtime
personal friends) to leave before the end of the show?
 The late Michael Hedges played at Juanita's as well,
and would walk into the crowd, entertaining and
engaging them.

I had Adonis, and liked just one cut from the album.  They have heavily
accented English accents, and were can be compared to the Eloy and
Grobschnitt style of music, but much less interesting.  My opinion?  Avoid

page was removed.  I guess they are defunct.   Thank goodness I got to see
them do The Selling England By the Pound show in March 1998.  It was

Subject: gg: Electric Dreams and Art Bell

At Scott's suggestion, I've ordered "Electric Dreams" by John McLaughlin. 
Apparently, there is a killer electric banjo piece in there.  I played an
electrified banjo in a talent show at Central High in
Independence/Monmouth, OR ... of course that was years ago.  Anyway,
reviews of that CD will be forthcoming.  Now, why did I mention Art Bell? 
Because ZZ Top did a tribute, more or less, to his show on their new
release.  It features Ross Mitchel's (Bell's announcer) deep voice doing
the usual promo and phone numbers for Bell's show.  As if Bell isn't
famous enough!  I love that show, and tape it at night to listen during
the day.  I don't need much of a prompting to buy a new ZZ Top, and I
don't clasify them as Prog rock by any stretch, but they are a fine bunch
of rockers and the band listens to Art Bell ... Just thought I'd pass this
along for the fun of it.

Another thing I liked about the show was how together the AUDIENCE was. 
Attentive -- is also a good word for it.  No manic distractions, just row

Gosh, golly, do you think they'll film a remake of The Partridge Fam?  Who
do you suppose would fill out the casting?  Just postulating ...Let's see,
what might liven up the movie?   I'm afraid we'll need to go to some
extremes here.  Is there ANY chance we might get Bill Clinton and Ted
Nugent onto one stage set?  Perhaps that's reaching, but it would provide
some excellent personality conflict.

My first Genesis show was the 'and then there were 3' tour. I've seen
every US tour since with the exceptions of 'Duke' and 'Invisible Touch'.
I did see them do 'Supper's Ready' in Saratoga, NY. That was
maybe...1981? Moosis? The 'We Can't Dance' show was a real extravaganza!

BoD *is* the second unless you're counting the limitedly-available The
Official Live Bootleg, more recently released in the States as The Beard Is
Out There, so I'm assuming you are.  Counting TOLB as the 2nd, that is.  Is

You're talking about "Thoughts", and it's not a rip-off, it's a tribute.
('Course *I'm* the one who defends Emerson, so what do *I* know?)  They
fully acknowledge a debt to GG and other classic prog artists.  BTW, the
non-GG-ish parts of the song are cool!

Facial Hair Update:  Monday, I went to work looking like a scruffy muffin.
My son used my shaver over the weekend, and didn't plug it in sufficiently
to recharge it, so by Monday it kinda went "R-r-r-r-R-R-r-r...  r-r...
RRrr...  cough, cough, wheeze".  Never fear, by Tuesday the studly Schick
was back to its former virility and the false start on the annual
traditional autumnal transition to full beard was history.  Stay tuned for
further exciting FHUs!  Remember Thanksgiving!

That is actually _the_ reason I came back. Since I can't get there,

I must've missed the beginning of this thread, but, most of my life, with 
most of the people I've ever known, it hasn't been ok to say you love Gentle 
Giant. People I've turned GG onto have said it was weird, or too busy, or
