Free Concert

Another from the final sets of concerts that Jimi played just before his death, Free Concert comes from Jimi's August 31st, 1970 performance in Stockholm, Sweden. A pretty decent, though not spectacular performance by the band. Beginning with the set opener Lover Man, Jimi then goes into Experiencing The Blues, featuring bits of various songs, before launching into the new and not yet released Ezy Rider. Come On, and Room Full Of Mirrors make rare appearances here, followed by a slow bluesy jam that leads into a pretty decent, though tape warbly, Hey Baby(Land Of The New Rising Sun). A spirited Message To Love segues into Jimi's masterpiece Machine Gun. Not as good as the Band Of Gypsys version, but what one is? Machine Gun ends with an explosion of guitar from Jimi and from the ashes, arises Voodoo Child (Slight Return). In From The Storm starts out wobbly, but comes together quickly. Purple Haze, and Foxy Lady bring this CD, and concert to a close.

Sound quality is average, bass and drums sound a bit distant but that's fairly normal with an audience recording. Not a CD that is a must have, but for the Hendrix nut, it increases the collection by one :)
