This isn't a release from any of the normal groups (Whoopy Kat, Midnight Beat, etc), this is part of a series conceived by a trade partner of mine, and covers done by me. Consider these a homemade release series. There will be different covers for each year, 66-70.
Some of this material has come out on other releases, these are going to be a series of special projects, tape transfers, things like that.
The first in this new series comes from Jimi's second set at the Public Music Hall, in Cleveland Ohio on March 26th, 1968. No tape of the first set has shown up yet. The band seemed to be in good form this night, playing very tight, though they do relax and jam on Red House, which is always a treat.
A rare and pretty good Manic Depression is featured this night, though Mitch's drums are mostly lost behind Jimi's guitar unfortunately. Jimi sounds as if he's destroying his Strat on the introduction to Purple Haze, warming it up for the set closer Wild Thing possibly. :)
During the introduction to Wild Thing, somebody in the audience yells for Jimi to take his hat off. He says he will, if the person takes their pants off :) A few opening chords of Have You Ever Been To Electric Ladyland are featured before Jimi goes into the set closer Wild Thing.
Not as wild as Monterey's, but what could be? Following this I've put on some bonus tracks, taken from Jimi's performance on the Dusty Springfield show, including Jimi's duet with Dusty on the track Mockingbird.
Also included is the infamous Tonight Show performance, where Jimi's amp blows up in the middle of Lover Man, bringing the song to a halt.
The amp would be replaced and Jimi would play it again. Good stuff, would be nice to see some of this rarer stuff come out on Dagger Records, the label formed by Experience Hendrix to deal with the material that isn't quite up to commercial release.
C'mon Janie, you're late with new stuff for us Jiminuts!
Pretty decent quality on these tracks. The Cleveland concert comes from an audience tape. Drums and guitar are pretty clear though the bass is a little low, as are the vocals. The Dusty Springfield and Tonight Show tracks I cleaned up some in my audio editing prog, so they are better than the originals (imho of course :) ).
But they sounded as though taped from a TV onto a portable tape deck, so quality wasn't the best to work with. But I did my best. Performances on them are pretty good though, even if the quality isn't up to par. But all in all, a nice debut from this company :)
